To clarify whether the closely related species living in the same area is a population or populations ecologically, leaf morphology, specific leaf area, and fruit and seed production were studied in the natural group of sect. Pes-gallinaceua of Corydalis of Namhansansung area from 1999 to 2000. There were 352 plants in one square meter and total eight species or varieties were identified. Of the 352 plants, the number of C. turtschaninovii was the most with 103(29.3%), and that of C. ambigua was the next with 78(22.2%), and that of C. turtschaninovii var. fumariaefolia was the smallest with 9(2.6%). In the 28 plants having spotted leaves, central leaflet did not parted or again parted. The extent of partition with the plant was various from non-parted type to perfectly two-parted type (three leaflet). Between two extreme types, there were diverse types so that this character formed a gradient. The rate of length/breadth was in the range of 0.79~2.17. This character was related to the extent of leaflet partition but did not well expressed the distinguishing trait along a species. The number and the type of serration were diverse and there was no sharp borderline among the species or varieties. Ecological properties, specific leaf area, the number of fruit per plant, and the number of seed per fruit, varied with a wide range in a species or variety but differences between species or variety were not significant. Therefore, the Corydalis group studied was regarded as a population on the three criteria: (1) possibility of interbreeding, (2) continuity of leaf morphology, (3) irrelevance between character and species, (4) similarity of several ecological properties.
The species of Corydalis cornupetala Y.H.Kim et J.H.Jeong Which is belong to the Corydaliaceae is only distributed at the Gyaejeong Forest in Gyeongsan. As one of the spring ephemeral plants, this species has limited growing period. The present study is on site characteristics and vegetation structure in the wild habitats of Corydalis cornupetala Y.H.Kim et J.H.Jeong and offers basic information on habitat conservation including recovery plan. The soil texture is silty loam and soil acidity is ranged as pH 5.4~5.9. The electric conductivity was 0.22-0.50 ds/m and soil organic content is ranged as 7.61~15.78 %. Fifty nine vascular plants were identified from 5 quadrats. According to the two way cluster analysis applied by the PC-ORD, the community was classified as Acer ginnala, Vicia amoena and Stellaria aquatica. The habitat of Corydalis cornupetala Y.H.Kim et J.H.Jeong was determined by the dissimilarity indices rather than the species number of appearance. Species diversity was 1.26, and dominance and evenness were found to be 0.08 and 0.92, respectively.

For the spring ephemeral and myrmecochorous perennia, Corydalis filistipes Nakai (Fumariaceae), rare and narrow endemic to Ullung Island in Korea, genetic diversity and structure of 4 subpopulations of the species were investigated with allozyme markers. Levels of genetic diversity (A=1.73, $P_{95%}$=61..2%, Ho=0.201, He=0.167) were relatively lower than those of other endemic species with widespread distribution range, but considerably higher than other endemic species with similar life history traits isolated in island. The moderate level of genetic diversity within subpopulations in C. filistipes is characteristic of the species with predominantly outcrossing, myrmecochorous seed dispersal by dual function of the elaisome and mode of sexual and asexual reproduction by the cleistogamy. The analysis of fixation indices showed an overall excess of heterozygotes (mean $F_{IS}=-0.1889,\;F_{IT}=-0.1226$) relative to H-W expectations. About 5.6% of the total genetic variation was found among subpopulations ($F_{ST}$=0.0557). The strategies of reasonable conservation and management, and the maintenance mechanism of genetic diversity of Corydalis filistipes Nakai, endemic plant species in Korea were discussed.
Objective : For the purpose of developing Korean herbology of the plants to Fumariaceae in Korea, the literatures of the successive generations have been thoroughly investigated to prepare this article. Methods : Books and research papers about Herbology which published at home and abroad were examined. Results : A list was made about Fumariaceae plant which were cultivated or grew naturally in Korea, after investigated the data on domestic and foreign Fumariaceae plants. Out of those lists, serviceable plants were selected and with those available plants, their distributions were analysed and parts which can be used as medicines were divided into 3 categories such as oriental medicine name, scientific name and non-official name. Fumariaceae's properties flavor, channels they use, effects, and toxicity were also noted. Fumariaceae (grew in Korea) were divided into 3 classes with 23 species. Out of those, 2 classes with 9 species were found serviceable which indicates 39% of all. Out of all 23 species of Fumariaceae family, Corydalis genus were found 21 species, which were shown the most. Among Fumariaceae species, Corydalis genus were found 8 medicinal plants, which were shown the most. Out of all serviceable parts in Fumariaceae, Herba and Tuber parts took first place as 5 species. There are 2 toxic species and 3 toxic medicinal parts, the survey said. Conclusion : There were totaled to 3 genera and 23 species in Fumariaceae in Korea and among them medicinal plants are 2 genera, 9 species, some 39 in total.
Chaerophylline and berberine hydroxide, both being alkaloids, isolated from Corydalis chaerophylla and C. longipes respectively were assayed against spore germination of some fungi, e.g. Alternaria solani, A. brassicola, A. brassicicola, Helminthosporium penniseti, Helminthosporium sp., Heterosporium sp., Curvularia penniseti, C. maculens and C. palliscens. While chaerophylline inhibited spore germination of most of the fungi at 1000 ppm, being also effective at 50, 100, 200 and 500 ppm, berberine hydroxide was significantly effective at much lower concentration, i.e., 400 ppm against several fungi. This compound was also effective against some fungi at 50, 100, 150, 200 ppm. There was 100% inhibition of spore germination in several fungi at highest concentration of both the compounds. Some of the fungi showed similar results even at lower concentrations.

The antioxidant activities of two crude extracts ($CH_2Cl_2$ and MeOH) and their solvent fractions (n-hexane, 85% aq. MeOH, n-BuOH, and $H_2O$ fractions) from Corydalis heterocarpa were determined by evaluating authentic $ONOO^-$ and $ONOO^-$ generated from SIN-1 (3-morpholinsydnonimine) in vitro as well as by measuring the degree of occurrence of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO). Scavenging activities of solvent fractions on authentic $ONOO^-$ increased in the order of n-BuOH > 85% aq. MeOH > $H_2O$ > n-hexane fractions, while those on $ONOO^-$ generated from SIN-1 increased in the order of n-BuOH > 85% aq. MeOH > $H_2O$ > n-hexane fractions. In addition, all solvent fractions effectively inhibited the intracellular ROS and NO levels. The n-BuOH fraction especially exhibited the strongest ROS scavenging effect. Further purification of n-BuOH fraction led to the isolation of cnidimoside A, which presented the potent ROS scavenging effect at $10\;{\mu}M$. From these results, extracts of C. heterocarpa and its component, cnidimoside A, were predicted to be potentially useful as ingredients for protecting against oxidation.
The development of the female gametophyte of Corydalis albipetala, C. ambigua, C. filistipes, C. nobilis, C. solida, C. ophiocarpa have been comparatively investigated using laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM) and light microscope. An archesporium was originated from one of the outmost parietal cells beneath the one-layered epidermis of protuberant nucellus, and acted directly as a megaspore mother cell (MMC). These species had linear tetrads after successional meiotic division during the megasprogenesis. A functional megasprore developed from one of the tetrad in the chalazal end, and the rest three being degenerated. The developmental type of the female gametophyte was monosporic in accordance with the Polygonum type. Prior to anthesis the female gametophyte was organized. So mature embryo sac was comprised a three-celled egg apparatus, three large antipodals were developed from the apex of each antipodal cell, and extended toward micropylar end to be contacted with egg apparatus. Two synergids were usually observed as degenerated condition, and in this time the apices of antipodal haustoria were connected with the degenerated synergids. The developmental characteristics of seven-nucleate female gametophytes were common in all the species investigated. But the shape of mature embryo sac was ovoidal in C. albipetala, C. filistipes, C. ophiocarpa and C. solida, reflexed in C. ambigua, and rather flattened ovoidal in C. nobilis. Also, the type of megasporangium was anatropous in all the species except C. ambigua with campylotropous ovule.
Seasonal occurrence and visiting flowers species of overwintered bumblebee queens were investigated during the spring season of 2000. A total of 1,277 overwintered bumblebee queens were collected, consisting of seven species of Bombus and one species of Psithyrus. The dominant species were Bombus ardens Smith and Bombus ignitus Smith. The heydays of their occuring season were the early April for B. ardens and the second half of the May for B. ignitus. B. ignitus was mainly collected on Prunus yedoensis Matsumura and Corydalis speciosa Min, and B. ardens on the Rhodldendron mucronulatum Turcz and Prunus yedoensis.
