The morphological and molecular characteristics of Pachydictyon coriaceum (Holmes) Okamura (1899) are described. Plants are collected from Korea all year round and have maximum height from August to September. The monthly variability of thallus growth is in the way with that of the seawater temperature. Two types of thallus structures, thick cortical layer tallus type and thin cortical cell layer type, are distinguished according to growing seasons. The habit of Korean plants is also classified into two thallus types, slender type and wide type, based on the length and the width of internodes, but this distinction between two types is not supported by either anatomical or molecular characteristics. P. coriaceum shares typical morphology in branching pattern and morphogenetic processes with the other species of Dictyota: 1) multi-cellular cortical and medullar layer in the partial of thallus, 2) same development of thallus from apical meristem cell, and 3) sub-lineage within Dictyota species lineage in rbcL, psaA and psbA gene sequences analyses. These characteristics lead to propose the new combination of Dictyota coriacea (Homes) I.K. Hwang, H.S. Kim et W.J. Lee, comb. nov.
Dental implant is increasingly used to recover the mastication function of tooth. Several types of implant were designed to give an optimal stress distribution in surrounding bony regions. In this study, six types of implant were investigated using finite element method and it was studied i) how the variation of cortical bone thickness affects the stress distribution in surrounding bony regions depending upon implant types, ii) which type gives the best characteristics in the sence of stress distribution and stability. The hybrid-type implant with cylinder and screw gave the optimum properties in view of stability and response to the variation of cortical bone thickness.
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a pathological condition associated with osteopenia. $WNT/{\beta}$-catenin signaling is implicated in this process. Trabecular and cortical bone respond differently to $WNT/{\beta}$-catenin signaling in healthy mice. We investigated whether this signaling has different effects on trabecular and cortical bone in T1DM. We first established a streptozotocin-induced T1DM mouse model and then constitutively activated ${\beta}$-catenin in osteoblasts in the setting of T1DM (T1-CA). The extent of bone loss was greater in trabecular bone than that in cortical bone in T1DM mice, and this difference was consistent with the reduction in the expression of ${\beta}$-catenin signaling in the two bone compartments. Further experiments demonstrated that in T1DM mice, trabecular bone showed lower levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) than the levels in cortical bone, leading to lower $WNT/{\beta}$-catenin signaling activity through the inhibition of the IGF-1R/Akt/glycogen synthase kinase $3{\beta}$ ($GSK3{\beta}$) pathway. After ${\beta}$-catenin was activated in T1-CA mice, the bone mass and bone strength increased to substantially greater extents in trabecular bone than those in cortical bone. In addition, the cortical bone of the T1-CA mice displayed an unexpected increase in bone porosity, with increased bone resorption. The downregulated expression of WNT16 might be responsible for these cortical bone changes. In conclusion, we found that although the activation of $WNT/{\beta}$-catenin signaling increased the trabecular bone mass and bone strength in T1DM mice, it also increased the cortical bone porosity, impairing the bone strength. These findings should be considered in the future treatment of T1DM-related osteopenia.
Focal cortical dysplasia type II (FCDII) is a focal malformation of the developing cerebral cortex and the major cause of intractable epilepsy. However, since the molecular genetic etiology of FCD has remained enigmatic, the effective therapeutic target for this condition has remained poorly understood. Our recent study on FCD utilizing various deep sequencing platforms identified somatic mutations in MTOR (existing as low as 1% allelic frequency) only in the affected brain tissues. We observed that these mutations induced hyperactivation of the mTOR kinase. In addition, focal cortical expression of mutant MTOR using in utero electroporation in mice, recapitulated the neuropathological features of FCDII, such as migration defect, cytomegalic neuron and spontaneous seizures. Furthermore, seizures and dysmorphic neurons were rescued by the administration of mTOR inhibitor, rapamycin. This study provides the first evidence that brain somatic activating mutations in MTOR cause FCD, and suggests the potential drug target for intractable epilepsy in FCD patients.

From a moss sample, we isolated and identified Notohymena gangwonensis Kim et al., 2019 based on morphological and molecular data. The moss and type population has completely identical 18S rRNA (nuclear small subunit ribosomal RNA) gene sequences and both are highly similar in morphological and morphometric attributes, except for the diameter and arrangement of the cortical granules. Thus, we reexamined the type materials(i.e., micrographs and gDNA) and resulted in finding mistakes made by the authors of the species. Based on these data and supporting materials newly obtained (i.e., internal transcribed spacer [ITS] 1, ITS2, 5.8S, and partial 28S rDNA sequences, and scanning electron micrographs), we provide improved diagnosis of the species to clarify its identity. In addition, a key for Notohymena species is provided.
Objective : Unique Internal carotid artery angiographic findings have been found especially in very poor grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage[SAH] patients before and during the endovascular coiling. The author investigates their patterns and classifies them into lour subtypes. Methods : Among Hunt&Hess grade IV, V SAH patients, the author could gather eight patients who showed abnormal intracranial circulation in cerebral catheter-based angiography. Results : The author introduces new term 'misery collaterals' first and has classified them into four types with the case illustrations. Type 1 is the worst condition defined as almost no intracranial circulation. Type 2 is the condition of little intracranial circulation with contrast filling just only at vessels of brain base, type 3 is of no or little cortical circulation with contrast filling at bilateral large vessels of brain base through circle of Willis channel and type 4 is of visible bilateral cortical circulation but delayed intracranial circulation time. The prognosis of these eight patients showed misery collaterals were disappointed. Conclusion : These finding can be used as the supportive information in deciding a management plan in poor grade SAH patients.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of length and shape of cutting flute on mechanical properties of orthodontic mini-implants. Methods: Three types of mini-implants with different flute patterns (Type A with 2.6 mm long flute, Type B with 3.9 mm long and straight flute, Type C with 3.9 mm long and helical flute) were inserted into the biomechanical test blocks (Sawbones Inc., USA) with 2 mm and 4 mm cortical bone thicknesses to test insertion and removal torque. Results: In 4 mm cortical bone thickness, Type C mini-implants showed highest maximum insertion torque, then Type A and Type B in order. Type C also showed shortest total insertion time and highest maximum removal torque, but Type A and B didn't showed statistically significant difference in insertion time and removal torque. In 2 mm cortical bone thickness, there were no significant difference in total insertion time and maximum removal torque in three types of mini-implants, but maximum insertion torque of Type A was higher than two other Types of mini-implants. Conclusions: Consideration about length and shape of cutting flute of mini-implant is also required when the placement site has thick cortical bone.
Objective: The primary objective of this study was to quantitatively analyze the bone parameters (thickness and density) at four different interdental areas from the distal region of the canine to the mesial region of the second molar in the maxilla and the mandible. The secondary aim was to compare and contrast the bone parameters at these specific locations in terms of sex, growth status, and facial type. Methods: This retrospective cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) study reviewed 290 CBCT images of patients seeking orthodontic treatment. Cortical bone thickness in millimeters (mm) and density in pixel intensity value were measured for the regions (1) between the canine and first premolar, (2) between the first and second premolars, (3) between the second premolar and first molar, and (4) between the first and second molars. At each location, the bone thickness and density were measured at distances of 2, 6, and 10 mm from the alveolar crest. Results: The sex comparison (male vs. female) in cortical bone thickness showed no significant difference (p > 0.001). The bone density in growing subjects was significantly (p < 0.001) lower than that in non-growing subjects for most locations. There was no significant difference (p > 0.001) in bone parameters in relation to facial pattern in the maxilla and mandible for most sites. Conclusions: There was no significant sex-related difference in cortical bone thickness. The buccal cortical bone density was higher in females than in males. Bone parameters were similar for subjects with hyperdivergent, hypodivergent, and normodivergent facial patterns.
Objective : Balloon cells and dysplastic neurons are histopathological hallmarks of the cortical tubers of tuberous sclerosis complex [TSC] and focal cortical dysplasia [FCD] of the Taylor type. They are believed to be the epileptogenic substrate and cause therapeutic drug resistant epilepsy in man. P-glycoprotein [P-gp] is the product of multidrug resistance gene [MDR1], and it maintains intracellular drug concentration at a relatively low level. The authors investigated expression of P-gp in balloon cells and dysplastic neurons of cortical tubers in patients with TSC. Methods : An immunohistochemical study using the primary antibody for P-gp, as an indicative of drug resistance, was performed in the cortical tuber tissues in two patients of surgical resection for epilepsy and six autopsy cases. Results : Balloon cells of each lesion showed different intensity and number in P-gp immunopositivity. P-gp immunopositivity in balloon cells were 28.2%, and dysplastic neurons were 22.7%. These immunoreactivities were more prominent in balloon cells distributed in the subpial region than deeper region of the cortical tubers. Capillary endothelial cells within the cortical tubers also showed P-gp immunopositivity. Conclusion : In this study, the drug resistance protein P-glycoprotein in balloon cells and dysplastic neurons might explain medically refractory epilepsy in TSC.

The aim of this study was to suggest a design for an orthodontic miniscrew which may work most favorably in the thin cortical bone of the adolescent. In this study, orthodontic miniscrews with different diameters, lengths, and body types were manufactured and implanted in two artificial bone samples with different cortical bone thickness. Maximum insertion torque, maximum removal torque, and lateral alteration torque were measured. As a result, the bone quality, body type, diameter, and the length all had their effects on the maximum insertion torque, maximum removal torque, and lateral alteration torque. Cortical bone thickness was the most important factor. In initial stability, conical types showed better results than cylindrical types. Increase in the diameter had favorable effects in achieving mechanical stability. Increase in the length did not have as much influence as the other factors did on the initial stability, but there was a statistically significant difference between screws of 6 mm and 8 mm lengths(p<0.05). In conclusion, the conical type screw with a diameter of 1.8 mm is most favorable in the thin cortical bone of the adolescent. In terms of length, the 8 mm screw is expected to perform better than the 6 mm screw.
