  • Ammonia removal capacities of five submerged filter media, 2~3mm sand, 30~50mm gravel, 20~40mm coral sand, polythylene net, and corrugated plastic plate in a seawater recirculating system were tested. A rotating biological contactor (RBC) was also tested for comparison. Oxygen consumption rates were measured along with the ammonia removal efficiencies. The ammonia concentrations in the system were maintained from 0.052 to 0.904 mg/l (mean 0.338$\pm$0.219 mg/l) and the water temperature was ranged from 19.2 to $21.4^{\circ}C\;(mean 20.2^{\circ}C\pm0.58^{\circ}C$). The 1/2-order kinetic model (Y:g/$m^3$/day) and the mean ammonia removal rates (g/$m^3$/day) of the filter media were : Sand : Y=135.5X0.5-25.1(r2=0.8110), 45.1 Coral sand : Y=125.1X0.5-33.0 (r2=0.7307), 31.8 Polyethylene net : Y=87.4X0.5-20.1 (r2=0.6780), 25.2 Corrugated plastic plate : Y=87.4X0.5-20.1(r2=0.5206), 19.2 Gravel : Y=4307X0.5-5.5 (r2=0.2596), 17.1 RBC : Y=127.6X0.5-33.4 (r2=0.7146), 32.8 where X is the concentration of ammonia. Oxygen consumption rates well corresponded to the ammonia removal capacities of each filter medium, thus the sands showing the highest value (442g/$m^3$/day) followed by coral sands (291.1g/$m^3$/day), polyethylene nets (236.9g/$m^3$/day), gravels (135.6g/$m^3$/day) and corrugated plastic plates (134.2g/$m^3$/day). Oxygen consumption rate of the RBC was unable to measure because of the characteristics of the structure.

  • If of application of the deep deckting floor in long span more than 6m, the deflection caused by the construction load occurred high. Because the constructing-works and safety by this deflection, take actually supports to laborers working on the deck. However, installed supports are having difficultly such as the restricted passage, deficiency of working space, and lowering of efficiency. And toward-opening deck is seen as local buckling of web plate, flexural-torsional buckling, and gradually opening of corrugated decking. In this study, we will suggest a deep decking floor system that reinforced with both ends cap plates for toward-opneing decking change from opening to closing. The constructing deflection of a deep decking more than 6m must be satified 30mm and L/180 as proposed. Full-scale field tests loading by sand conducted a deep decking reinforced with and without cap plate. In conclusion, the specimen reinforced with cap plates have shown that to ensure the negative moment $wl^2/18$. And constructing-deflection of deep decking shown that to satisfy the evaluation value (L/180 or 30mm).

  • Large aluminium extrusions can be used in rolling stocks and high speed vessels to reduce weight and labor cost. As sandwich plates with corrugated core have enough strength in transverse and longitudinal direction, welding lines to connect members are reduced and transverse members to strength longitudinal members are not required. However, for proper design of aluminium extrusion plates, understanding of structural behaviors of the exclusions are necessary. In this paper, at first, detailed finite element analysis is carried out to understand structural behavior. And then, simple theoretical formulas for design purpose are proposed using the orthotropic plate theory. Shear stresses resulting from end twisting which is characteristics of deep aluminium extrusion plates can also be calculated by the simple theoretical formula. Comparison with the results by detailed finite element analysis shows good accuracy of the proposed simple formulas. The simple formulas can be useful in repetitive analysis in the initial design stage.

  • In this study, the effect of corrugation angle on thermal performance of corrugated plate is numerically investigated with an aim to develop humidifying element. Numerical analysis was conducted for a range of corrugation angle (from $0^{\circ}/0^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}/60^{\circ}$ for equal angle and from $15^{\circ}/0^{\circ}$ to $15^{\circ}/60^{\circ}$ for unequal angle). Results revealed that both j and f factor increased as corrugation angle increased. Especially, f factor increased significantly at high corrugation angles. j and f factors of unequal angle plates and those of equal angle (obtained by averaging unequal angles) plates were approximately the same. The largest $j/f^{1/3}$, which implies the largest heat transfer rate per consumed power, was obtained at $15^{\circ}/15^{\circ}$. Existing correlations under- or over-predicted the present numerical results.

  • Recently, necessities of steel form for reinforced concrete beam and girder have been emphasized in building structures for the reduction of the construction period and the labor cost. SY Beam was developed for the these purposes and is roll-formed using thin steel plate. On this research, we tried to evaluate and verify the performance and behavior of SY Beam under construction loading stage as like pouring in situ concrete. For the standard shape of SY beam, structural modelling with various steel thicknesses has carried out using MIDAS GEN program. From results of modelling, the width and height of SY Beam were determined 600mm and 400mm respectively. For 3 SY Beams, the loading experiment was performed to measure vertical and horizontal displacement under stacking sand, concrete block, and bundle of rebar. As a result, the vertical deflection showed a tendency to decrease as the thickness increased. In the horizontal displacement, the trend according to the thickness was not clearly observed. From the evaluation on the loading experiment, it is considered that the SY Beam can secure both workability and structural safety. In particular, the SY Beam(1.2mm) hardly generates horizontal displacement, so it has excellent load-bearing capacity. So, we judged that the SY Beam with 1.2mm steel plate has excellent performance and consider to be immediately commercially available.

  • Soil-steel structures have been used for the underpass, or drainage systems in the road embankment. This type of structures sustain external load using the correlations with the steel wall and engineered backfill materials. Buried flexible conduits made of corrugated steel plates for the coastal road was tested under vehicle loading to investigate the effects of live load. Testing conduits was a circular structure with a diameter of 6.25m. Live-load tests were conducted on two sections, one of which an attempt was made to reinforce the soil cover with the two layers of geo-gird. Hoop fiber strains of corrugated plate, normal earth pressures exerted outside the structure, and deformations of structure were instrumented during the tests. This paper describes the measured static and dynamic load responses of structure. Wall thrust by vehicle loads increased mainly at the crown and shoulder part of the conduit. However additional bending moment by vehicle loads was neglectable. The effectiveness of geogrid-reinforced soil cover on reducing hoop thrust is also discussed based on the measurements in two sections of the structure. The maximum thrusts at the section with geogrid-reinforced soil cover was 85-92% of those with un-reinforced soil cover in the static load tests of the circular structure; this confirms the beneficial effect of soil cover reinforcement on reducing the hoop thrust. However, it was revealed that the two layers of geogrid had no effect on reducing the overburden pressure at the crown level of structure. The obtained values of DLA decrease approximately in proportion to the increase in soil cover from 0.9m to 1.5m. These values are about 1.2-1.4 times higher than those specified in CHBDC.

  • Nitrification Is an important facet of water recycling fish culture system, because the toxic cation ammonia is converted to the innocuous anion nitrate. This study was attempted to find the optimal design factor of submerged filter for ammonia removal in water recycling fish culture system. The experimental system was designed submerged filter with corrugated skylight plate, and operated in the fish farm, National Fisheries University of Pusan. When the influent ammonia concentration was about 10mg/l (9.43-13.66mg/l) nitrification rates were tested for the removal of ammonia over a four stage of the hydraulic loadings. The submerged filter removed 76.24, 62.88, 39.09 and $9.20\%$ of the ammonia to hydraulic load of 0.028, 0.037, 0.056 and $0.111m^3/m^2$. day, respectively. We can apply the above data to the material balance on the ammonia concentration in a fish reservoir, and conclude that the maximum allowable ammonia production was 1.52mg/min, and the optimal hydraulic loading was $0.047m^3/m^2$\;\cdot day$, in order to maintain the ammonia concentration below 10mg/l in the fish reservoir.

  • We evaluated changes in the microbiological quality and safety of food items (vegetables, seaweed, and processed food) supplied to elementary school food services to evaluate the distribution/delivery system. Pretreated vegetables, seaweed, and processed food were delivered to schools in refrigerated (${\leq}10^{\circ}C$) vans that made several delivery stops before arriving at the schools. During the distribution stage, total plate and coliforms counts were: bellflower roots $7.6{\times}10^5-6.7{\times}10^6$ and $5.8{\times}10^4-5.2{\times}10^5$ CFU/g; blanched bracken $4.5{\times}10^3-2.1{\times}10^5$, $5.0{\times}10^3-1{\times}10^4$ CFU/g; onion $1.2{\times}10^4-1.4{\times}10^4$, $5.0{\times}10$ CFU/g; soybean sprouts $9.6{\times}10^4-6.3{\times}10^7$ and $1.1{\times}10^3-1.2{\times}10^7$ CFU/g; soybean curd < $10-9.7{\times}10^5$ and < $10-2.3{\times}10^5$ CFU/g; and starch jelly < $10-3.8{\times}10^3$ and <10 CFU/g. Bacillus cereus < $10-4.1{\times}10^2$ CFU/g, Escherichia coli $1.0{\times}10-2.0{\times}10$ CFU/g, and Staphylococcus aureus $1.3{\times}10^2-4.1{\times}10^2$ CFU/g were detected on peeled bellflower, whereas B. cereus < $10-4.1{\times}10^2$ CFU/g, Listeria monocytogenes $1.0{\times}10-4.5{\times}10^2$ CFU/g, and S. aureus $1.8{\times}10^2-4.5{\times}10^2$ CFU/g, were detected on soybean sprouts. Most food items were double-wrapped in vinyl and placed in corrugated cardboard boxes prior to delivery, but the boxes, when placed in vans, were not segregated from other food items being delivered to schools and other destinations.
