A Study of Corrosion Resistance and Torque in Bolt Coated with Magni 565 (Magni 565 코팅 볼트의 내식성 및 토오크 특성에 대한 연구)

  • Corrosion resistance and torque of M10 bolt coated with Magni 565 were investigated. Corrosion protection mechanism were also studied with the microstructure of coating film. The bolts with the optimum conditions showed around $10{\mu}m$ layer thickness, a great corrosion resistance in salt spray test and a proper torque in torque/tension test. But torque coefficient k increased with the number of bolting and clamping force of M10 bolt showed significantly lower than that of specified value 28.3kN. It was thought that the repeated bolting made the coating film peel off and powdery. The sample coated with optimum coating conditions showed more higher polarization resistance and corrosion potential than the specimens of top and base coat only. The base coating film was composed of lamellar zinc flakes, which provides a large sacrificial cathodic protection. Meanwhile, the top coating film was composed of organic aluminium pigments layer, which provides barrier protection to the corrosion circumstances.

  • The liquid lead-lithium (Pb-17Li) blanket has many applications in fusion reactors due to its good tritium breeding performance, high heat transfer efficiency and safety. The compatibility of liquid Pb-17Li alloy with the structural material of blanket under magnetic field is one of the concerns. In this study, corrosion experiments China low activation martensitic (CLAM) steel and 316L steel were carried out in a forced convection Pb-17Li loop under 1.0 T magnetic field at 480 ℃ for 1000 h. The corrosion results on 316L steel showed the characteristic with a superficial porous layer resulted from selective leaching of high-soluble alloy elements and subsequent phase transformation from austenitic matrix to ferritic phase. Then the porous layers were eroded by high-velocity jet fluid. The main corrosion mechanism of CLAM steel was selective dissolution-base corrosion attack on the microstructure boundary regions and exclusively on high residual stress areas. CLAM steel performed a better corrosion resistance than that of 316L steel. The high Ni dissolution rate and the erosion of corroded layers are the main causes for the severe corrosion of 316L steel.

  • This paper focuses on techniques of improving refinery reliability, availability, and profitability. Our team developed a corrosion control document(CCD) for processing of the crude distillation unit(CDU). Recent study shows the loss due to corrosion in US is around $276 billion. It's a big concern for both managers and engineers of refinery industry. The CCD consists of numerous parts namely damage mechanism(DM), design data, critical reliability variable(CRV), guidelines, etc. The first step in the development of CCD is to build material selection diagram(MSD). Damage mechanisms affecting equipments and process need to be chosen carefully based on API 571. The selected nine DM from API 571 are (1) creep/stress rupture, (2) fuel ash corrosion, (3) oxidation, (4) high temperature sulfidation, (5) naphthenic acid corrosion, (6) hydrochloric acid(HCL) corrosion, (7) ammonium chloride(salt) corrosion, (8) wet $H_2S$ corrosion, and (9) ammonia stress corrosion cracking. Each DM related to corrosion of CDU process was selected by design data, P&ID, PFD, corrosion loop, flow of process, equipment's history, and experience. Operating variables affecting severity of DM are selected in initial stage of CRV. We propose the guidelines for reliability of equipments based on CRV. The CCD has been developed on the basis of the corrosion control in refinery industry. It also improves the safety of refinery process and reduces the cost of corrosion greatly.

Corrosion Properties of Carbon-Coated Metallic Bipolar Plate for PEMFC (고분자 전해질 연료전지 금속 분리판 적용을 위한 탄소 박막의 증착과 내식성 평가)

  • Carbon thin films were deposited on STS 316L sheets by inductively coupled plasma enhanced magnetron sputtering with or without substrate bias voltage. Typical Raman spectrum for amorphous diamond-like carbon (DLC) was obtained, and the interfacial contact resistance (ICR) was measured to show its conductive nature. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to investigate the corrosion mechanism of the carbon coating under the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) condition. According to the pore-corrosion mechanism, the electrolyte penetrates the carbon coating through the pores and reacts with the substrate. As the substrate corrosion proceeds, the pore enlargement occurs and the surface area of the substrate exposed to the electrolyte. Applicability of the carbon coating for the PEMFC bipolar plate was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization experiments. Finally, an adhesion problem was briefly considered.

  • Bacterial self-healing concrete is known to improve the durability of concrete by preventing the propagation of microcracks. In the literature, bacteria prevent the corrosion of rebar by inhibiting water transfer through crack, but also can promote the corrosion by acting as an ion acceptor in the rust generation mechanism. Therefore in this study, the electrochemical analysis of bio-filmed rebar was conducted to explore the effects of the self-healing bacteria on the bare rebar without cement composite. As a result of the experiment contradicting trends for Ecorr and Icorr occurred and additional experiment will be conducted in various environments to collect data on the mechanism of corrosion of rebar by bacteria.

Study on the Cavitation Damage of Cupronickel(70/30) Tube for Gas Absorption Refrigeration Machine

  • The use of gas absorption refrigeration machine has considerably increased because of the shortage of the electric power in the summer and the regulation of freon refrigerant. Gas absorption refrigeration machine consists of a condenser, a heat exchanger. supplying pipes, a radiator etc, This system is likely to be corroded by acid. dissolved oxygen and gases, Cavitation erosion-corrosion by flow velocity of cooling water may happen in absorption refrigeration machine. In these cases. erosion and corrosion occur simultaneously. Then, it makes a serious damage with synergy effect. Therefore, this paper was studied on the cavitation damage of cupronickel(70/30) tube for gas absorption refrigeration machine, In the $30^{\circ}C$ tap water, linear polarization test and anodic polarization test were carried out for copper(C1220T-OL) and cupronickel(70/30) tube. Also, cavitation erosion-corrosion behavior of cupronickel (70/30) tube was considered, The main results are as following: (1) In the linear test, the corrosion current density of cupronickel(70/30) is higher than that of copper. (2) The erosion-corrosion rate of cupronickel(70/30) displayed later tendency than that of copper by vibratory cavitation in cooling water. (3) In cooling water, the progress mechanism of erosion-corrosion rate of copper and cupronickel(70/30) follows a pattern of incubation, acceleration, attenuation and a steady state period.

Intergranular Corrosion Mechanism of Slightly-sensitized and UNSM-treated 316L Stainless Steel

  • 316L stainless steels have been widely used in many engineering fields, because of their high corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties. However, welding or aging treatment may induce intergranular corrosion and stress corrosion cracking etc. Since these types of corrosion are closely related to the formation of chromium carbide in grain boundaries, the alloys are controlled by methods such as the lowering of carbon content, solution heat treatment. This work focused on the intergranular corrosion mechanism of slightly-sensitized and Ultrasonic Nano-crystal Surface Modification (UNSM)-treated 316L stainless steel. Samples were sensitized for 1, 5, and 48 hours at $650^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ gas atmosphere. Subsequently UNSM treatments were carried out on the surface of the samples. The results were discussed on the basis of the sensitization by chromium carbide and carbon segregation, the residual stress and grain refinement. Even though chromium carbide was not precipitated, the intergranular corrosion rate of 316L stainless steel was drastically increased with aging time, and it was confirmed that the increased intergranular corrosion rate of slightly-sensitized (not carbide formed) 316L stainless steel was due to the carbon segregation along the grain boundaries. However, UNSM treatment improved the intergranular corrosion resistance of aged stainless steels, and its improvement was due to the reduction of carbon segregation and the grain refinement of the outer surface, including the introduction of compressive residual stress.

Corrosion of Containment Alloys in Molten Salt Reactors and the Prospect of Online Monitoring

  • The aim of this review is to communicate some essential knowledge of the underlying mechanism of the corrosion of structural containment alloys during molten salt reactor operation in the context of prospective online monitoring in future MSR installations. The formation of metal halide species and the progression of their concentration in the molten salt do reflect containment corrosion, tracing the depletion of alloying metals at the alloy salt interface will assure safe conditions during reactor operation. Even though the progress of alloying metal halides concentrations in the molten salt do strongly understate actual corrosion rates, their prospective 1st order kinetics followed by near-linearly increase is attributed to homogeneous matrix corrosion. The service life of the structural containment alloy is derived from homogeneous matrix corrosion and near-surface void formation but less so from intergranular cracking (IGC) and pitting corrosion. Online monitoring of corrosion species is of particular interest for molten chloride systems since besides the expected formation of chromium chloride species CrCl2 and CrCl3, other metal chloride species such as FeCl2, FeCl3, MoCl2, MnCl2 and NiCl2 will form, depending on the selected structural alloy. The metal chloride concentrations should follow, after an incubation period of about 10,000 hours, a linear projection with a positive slope and a steady increase of < 1 ppm per day. During the incubation period, metal concentration show 1st order kinetics and increasing linearly with time1/2. Ideally, a linear increase reflects homogeneous matrix corrosion, while a sharp increase in the metal chloride concentration could set a warning flag for potential material failure within the projected service life, e.g. as result of intergranular cracking or pitting corrosion. Continuous monitoring of metal chloride concentrations can therefore provide direct information about the mechanism of the ongoing corrosion scenario and offer valuable information for a timely warning of prospective material failure.

  • The corrosion of steel reinforcements in concrete is of much concern in recent years. The mechanism of corrosion, however, is not clear yet. This study is focused on the corrosion of steel induced by internal chlorides in concrete at early ages. To examine the critical concentration of steel, half-cell potential, chemical composition of expressed pore solutions of mortars and rate of corrosion area were observed with respect to additions of chlorides, types of binders, water-binders ratio.

  • Fretting corrosion widely known as a degradation mechanism refers to the combination of fretting wear and corrosion such as oxidation. This paper critically reviews the works published previously on fretting corrosion of electrical connectors. Various experimental approaches such as testing machines, material selection, testing environments, acceleration testing techniques and preventing methods are addressed. Future research prospects are suggested.
