The frequency dependency of Rayleigh surface wave is investigated indirectly by measuring the angular dependency of the backward radiation of the incident ultrasonic wave in two kinds of degraded specimens by scuffing or corrosion. Then, the frequency dependency is compared with the residual stress distribution or the corrosion-fatigue characteristics for the scuffed or corroded specimens, respectively. The width of the backward radiation profile increases with the increase of the variation in residual stress distribution for the scuffed specimens. In the corroded specimens, the profile width decreases with the increase of the effective aging layer thickness and is inversely proportional to the exponent, m, in the Paris' law that can predict the crack size increase due to fatigue. The result observed in this study demonstrates high potential of backward radiated ultrasound as a tool for nondestructive evaluation of subsurface gradient of material degradation generated by scuffing or corrosion.
6063-T5 alloys are tested in laboratory air, water and 3% NaCl solution to investigate the effects of corrosive environment on the retardation behavior through single overload fatigue test. Also, the fatigue crack propagation and the crack closure behavior are studied. The results obtained in this experimental study are summarized as follows. 1) Behaviors of fatigue crack growth retardation are observed in water and 3% NaCl solution as they do in air. The number of delay cycles and the size of affected region by single overload decrease greatly in water and 3% NaCl compared with those in air. 2) In fractographic results, the overload marking by single overload appear remarkably in air, but indistinctly in water and 3% NaCl solution. 3) The effect of crack closure on crack propagation is most remarkable in the beginning of crack propagation. With crack propagation, the crack closure level and its effect decrease greatly.

TMCP steel has been widely used to construct ships and offshore structures. When it comes to ship and offshore structures, corrosion fatigue damages caused by sea water and fatigue occurred by wave-induced forces usually go on occurring simultaneously. So the fatigue life in corrosion environment is decreased markedly in comparison with that in air. The fatigue crack in corrosion easily initiates on welded joints of structure like as the fatigue crack in air. Therefore it is very important to study the fatigue properties of those of their welded joints as well as steel plates. In this study, rotary bending fatigue tests have been performed to investigate fatigue crack initiation and behavior of fatigue crack growth on CO2 gas weld HAZ of TMCP steel. The fatigue test used the specimens with various stress concentration factors in air and 3% NaCl solution
The fatigue crack growth behavior of Type 347 (S347) and Type 347N (S347N) stainless steel was evaluated under the operating conditions of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). These two materials showed different fatigue crack growth rates (FCGRs) according to the changes in dissolved oxygen content and frequency. Under the simulated PWR conditions for normal operation, the FCGR of S347N was lower than that of S347 and insensitive to the changes in PWR water conditions. The higher yield strength and better corrosion resistance of the nitrogen-alloyed Type 347 stainless steel might be a main cause of slower FCGR and more stable properties against changes in environmental conditions.
Corrosion fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior of 316LN stainless steel was investigated in high-temperature pressurized water at different temperatures, load ratios (R = Kmax/Kmin) and rise times (tR). The environmental assisted effect on FCG rate was observed when both the R and tR exceeded their critical values. The FCG rate showed a linear relation with stress intensity factor range (ΔK) in double logarithmic coordinate. The environmental assisted effect on FCG rate depended on the ΔK and quantitative relations were proposed. Possible mechanisms of environmental assisted FCG rate under different testing conditions are also discussed.
In this study, corrosion fatigue test of SAPH45 steel was performed by the use of plane behavior of base metal (BM) and heat affected zone (HAZ) of SAPH45. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) The more aspect ratio (b/t) of corner crack decreases, the more aspect ratio (b/a) takes greatly effect by corrosion. 2) The correlation between the stress intensity factor range ($\Delta$k) and crack growth rate (da/dN) for weldment in seawater is given by Paris rule as follow: da/dN=C($\Delta$K) super(m). Where m is constant, and the value is 3.82-3.84. 3) The accelerative factor ($\alpha$) of BM and HAZ under seawater is about 1.1-1.9, and ($\alpha$) of HAZ increases more and more under the low $\Delta$K region. 4) HAZ is more susceptible to corrowion than BM because of potential of electrode (E sub(c)) of HAZ becomes more less noble potential than that of BM.

Mechanical fastening is still one of the main methods used for joining components. Different techniques have been applied to reduce the effect of stress concentration of notches like fastener holes. In this work we evaluate the feasibility of combining laser shock peening (LSP) and cold expansion to improve fatigue crack initiation and propagation of open hole specimens made of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. LSP is a new and competitive technique for strengthening metals, and like cold expansion, induces a compressive residual stress field that improves fatigue, wear and corrosion resistance. For LSP treatment, a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with infrared radiation was used. Residual stress distribution as a function of depth was determined by the contour method. Compact tension specimens with a hole at the notch tip were subjected to LSP process and cold expansion and then tested under cyclic loading with R=0.1 generating fatigue cracks on the hole surface. Fatigue crack initiation and growth is analyzed and associated with the residual stress distribution generated by both treatments. It is observed that both methods are complementary; cold expansion increases fatigue crack initiation life, while LSP reduces fatigue crack growth rate.

It was known that the fracture incidences of offshore structure were mostly originated from the surface defects. Especially, in the case of the welded structures, since the welded region has some defects and incomplete beads which are apt to behave like the surface cracks, it has been necessary to evaluate the environmental effects on crack growth at HAZ for the design crack growth behaviour at multi-pall HAZ for SWS41 steel under free corrosion and cathodic protection(-0.9V vs Ag/Agcl) conditions. The results are summarized as follows ; (1) Crack growth rate of the as weld in air was faster than that of the parent and PWHT specimens over all .DELTA.K rang. (2) In free corrosion test, surface crack growth rate of the as welded was decreased in comparison with that of the parents. (3) In fatigue test under cathodic protection, cathodic electric potential(-0.9V vs Ag/Agcl) for the SWS41 steel parent was effective, while for the as welded ineffective. (4) There was a tendency that the exponent(m) of the Paris' equation was decreased in order of microhardness magnititude in air and under cathodic protection conditions and vise versa in free corrosion. (5) Fracture surface has dimples and ductile striations in air test, but transgranular cracks and brittle striations under cathodic protection test.
P-PIE is a program developed to estimate failure probability of pipes and pressure vessels considering fatigue and stress corrosion crack growth. Using the program, crack growth simulation was performed with an initially existing crack in order to examine the effects of initial crack depth distribution on the leak probability of pipes. In the simulation stress corrosion crack growth was considered and several crack depth distribution models were used. From the results it was found that the initial crack depth distribution gives great effect on the leak probability of pipes. The log-normal distribution proposed by Khaleel and Simonen gives lower leak probability compared other exponential distribution models. The effects of the number and the quality of pre-service and in-service inspections on the leak probability were also examined and it was recognized that the number and the quality of pre-service and in-service inspections are also give great effect on the leak probability. In order to reduce the leak probability of pipes in plants it is very important to improve the quality of inspections. When in-service inspection is performed every 10 years and the quality of inspection is above the very good level, the leak probability shows nearly constant value after the first inspection for an initially existing crack.

Corrosion fatigue test was performed by the use of plane bending fatigue tester in marine environment having various specific resistance from 25(natural sea water) to 5000.ohm.cm. It is in order to investigate the effects of marine environmental factor on the corrosion fatigue fracture of SS41 steel. The main results obtained are as follows; 1. The aspect ratio(b/a) of corner crack growing in natural sea water is lower than that in air. 2. The surface crack growth rate(da/dN) in marine environment is faster than that in air and da/dN delaies with the specific resistance increased. 3. The experimental constant m of paris rule [da/dN=C(${\delta}$K)$^m$] decrease with the specific resistance decreased and the effect of corrosion in proportion to the specific resistance is more sensitive than that of stress intensity factor range(${\delta}$K) under region II. 4. The accelerative factor(${\alpha}$) in marine environment is about 1.1-2.7 and .alpha. is increase under the low region of stress intensity factor range(${\delta}$K). 5. The electrode potential($E_0$) gets less noble potential with the specific resistance decreased.
