Due to increase of air pollution substance, such as $SO_2$,$SO_3$, H2S ,CO, HCI, $Cl_2$ and so on, the operating environment of mechanical equipment and facilities like generating plants, ships, metal structure etc., are acidified and corroded. In these environments, the crevice corrosion of marine facilities frequently occurs at crevice like jointed bolt, gasket or sealant, riveted plates, contact of metal with non-metallic solids etc. Therefore, this paper was studied on the crevice corrosion behavior of mild steel(SS 400) in marine environment. In a variety of NaCl solutions, the aspect of he .crevice corrosion and polarization behavior under the crevice corrosion was investigated. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) Under crevice corrosion, the open circuit potential become less treble as the concentration of NaCl solution increased. 2) The corrosion current density of mild steel was high drained as the concentration of NaCl solution increased by 3.5%, but in the concentration increased over 3.5%, the corrosion current density was low drained. 3) The crevice corrosion is more sensitive to the synergy effect of dissolved oxygen and NaCl.

Effects of alloying elements on the surface characteristics of Fe-38Al intermetallic compounds were investigated using potentiostat. The specimens were casted by the vacuum arc melting. The subsequent homogenization and the stabilization led to the homogeneous DO$_3$ structure of the specimen. After the corrosion tests, the surface of the tested specimen was observed by the optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). For Fe-38 at.% Al intermetallic compound, the addition of Cr and Mo proved to be beneficial in decreasing the grain boundary attack by decreasing the active current density. Addition of Band Nb resulted in a higher active current density and also a higher passive current density. These results indicated the role of Cr and Mo in improving the pitting corrosion resistance of Fe-38 at.%Al intermetallic compound. Band Nb addition to Fe-38 at.%Al accelerated the granular corrosion. Fe-38 at.%Al containing Cr and Mo showed remarkably improved pitting corrosion resistance in comparison with Band Nb addition to Fe-38 at. %Al.

As the results of recent industrial development, many industrial plants and marine structures are exposed to severe corrosion environment than before. Especially, under the wet environment, crevice corrosion damage problems necessarily occur and encourage many interests to prevent them. In this study, the electrochemical polarization test was carried out to study characteristics of crevice corrosion for AISI 304 stainless steel in various solution temperatures. The results are as follows ; 1) as the solution temperature increased in IN $\textrm{H}_2\textrm{SO}_4$, the passive current density and critical current density were increased, whereas corrosion potential and break down potential were nearly constant, 2) as the solution temperature increased. the induced time for initiation of crevice corrosion was shortened. 3) The potential range in the crevice was -220mV/SCE to -380mV/SCE according to the distance from the crevice opening, which is lower than that of external surface of -200mV/SCE.
Flow-Accelerated Corrosion Behavior of SA106 Gr.C steel in room temperature alkaline solution simulating the CANDU primary water condition was studied using Rotating Cylinder Electrode. Systems of RCE were set up and electrochemical parameters were applied at various rotating speeds. Corrosion current density decreased up to pH 10.4 then it increased rapidly at higher pH. This is due to the increasing tendency of cathodic and anodic exchange half-cell current. Corrosion potential shifted slightly upward with rotating velocity. Passive film was formed from pH 9.8 by the mechanism of step oxidation and the subsequent precipitation of ferrous species into hydroxyl compound. Above pH 10.4, the film formation process was active and the film became stable. Corrosion current density showed increment in pH 6.98 with the rotating velocity, while it soon saturated from 1000 rpm above pH 9.8. This seems that activation process which represents formation of passive film on the bare metal surface controls the entire corrosion process
The corrosion behavior of stainless steel 304 (SS 304), titanium, nickel and aluminium is studied by immersion and anodic polarization tests in non-aqueous electrolytes. Tetraethyl ammonium tetrafluoroborate is used as a supporting electrolyte in the three kinds of solvents. The immersion test shows that chemical corrosion rate in propylene carbonate-based electrolyte is lower than those in acetonitrile- or ${\gamma}$-butyrolactone-based electrolytes. Surface analyses do not reveal any corrosion product formed after the immersion test. In the anodic polarization tests, a higher concentration of supporting electrolyte gives a higher current density. In addition, a higher temperature increases the current density in the active region and reduces the potential range in the passive region. SS 304 shows the highest corrosion potential while Al shows the lowest corrosion potential and the highest current density in all studied conditions. Based on the conducted corrosion tests, the corrosion resistance of metal substrates in the organic solvents can be sorted in descending order as follows: SS 304 - Ti - Ni - Al.
The purpose of this study was to compare the corrosion characteristics between implant fixture and two types of abutment screw ; gold screw, titanium screw. The anodic polarization behavior, the galvanic corrosion behavior, and the crevice corrosion behavior of prepared samples were investigated using potentiostat and scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1. Anodic polarization behavior of samples; The primary passivation potential of implant fixture was -420mV, implant abutment was -560mV. titanium screw was -370mV and gold screw was -230mV. All samples were shown to have a high corrosion potential and good formation of passive film. The critical passive current density of gold screw was higher than that of other samples and the sample of gold screw showed a unstable passive film formation at passive region. 2. Galvanic corrosion behavior of samples; Contact current density between implant fixture and titanium screw showed $8.023{\times}10^{-5}C/cm^2$. Contact current density between implant fixture and gold screw showed $5.142{\times}10^{-5}C/cm^2$. 3. Crevice corrosion behavior of samples; The crevice corrosion resistance of sample using titanium screw was higher than that of sample using gold screw, and a severe corrosion morphologies were observed at the fixture-screw interface by the scanning electron microscope.
Port facilities and marine structures used in marine environment were encountered to corrosion damages because of the influence of $Cl^-$. Generally, to protect these accidents, mainly applied anti-corrosion paint and epoxy coating. But it was still remained erosion-corrosion damage such as impingement erosion, cavitation erosion, deposit attack. There was needs to develope the new coating materials to protective those corrosion damages. This paper, polyester glass flake, vinylester glass flake lining and epoxy coating for SS were investigated electrochemical tests and cavitation erosion test for corrosion behaviour under sea water. The main results obtained are as follows, 1) Surface of epoxy coating appear erosion pin hole but surface of polyester glass flake and vinylester glass flake lining do not appear erosion pin hole after impingement-cavitation erosion test in sea water. 2) Weight loss of polyester glass flake and vinylester glass flake lining do not occur after impingement-cavitation erosion test in sea water. 3) Corrosion current density of polyester glass flake lining less drained than epoxy coating and substrate under corrosion potential.. 4) Corrosion current density of vinylester glass flake lining with three coating less drained than that of polyester glass flake lining with two coating.
The aim of this study was to investigate effects of hafnium content on the corrosion behavior of Ti alloys in electrolyte containing chloride ion. For this study, Ti-Hf binary alloys contained 10 wt%, 20 wt% and 30 wt% Hf were manufactured in a vacuum arc-melting furnace and subjected to heat treatment for 12h at $1000^{\circ}C$ in an argon atmosphere. The pitting corrosion behavior of the specimens was examined through potentiodynamic and potentiostatic tests in 0.9 wt% NaCl electrolyte at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The corrosion morphology of Ti-xHf alloys was investigated using optical microscopy (OM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). From the optical microstructures and XRD results, needle-like martensite ($\alpha$') phases of the Ti-xHf alloys increased with an increase of Hf addition. Corrosion current density $(I_{corr})$ and current density $(I_{300mV})$ in passive region decreased, whereas, corrosion potential increased with Hf content. At the constant potential ($300mV_{SCE}$), current density decreased as time increased.
During the process of sulfur dioxide removal, flue gas desulfurization equipment provides a serious internal corrosion environment in creating sulfuric acid dew point corrosion. Therefore, the utilities must use the excellent corrosion resistance of steel desulfurization facilities in the atmosphere. Until now, the trend in developing anti-sulfuric acid steels was essentially the addition of Cu, in order to improve the corrosion resistance. The experimental alloy used in this study is Fe-0.03C-1.0Mn-0.3Si-0.15Ni-0.31Cu alloys to which Ru, Zn and Ta were added. In order to investigate the effect of $H_2SO_4$ concentration and the alloying elements, chemical and electrochemical corrosion tests were performed. In a low concentration of $H_2SO_4$ solution, the major factor affecting the corrosion rate of low alloy steels was the exchange current density for $H^+/H_2$ reaction, while in a high concentration of $H_2SO_4$ solution, the major factors were the thin and dense passive film and resulting passivation behavior. The alloying elements reducing the exchange current density in low concentration of $H_2SO_4$, and the alloying elements decreasing the passive current density in high concentration of $H_2SO_4$, together play an important role in determining the corrosion rate of Cu-bearing low alloy steels in a wide range of $H_2SO_4$ solution.

This study aims to investigate the feasibility of the half-cell potential (HCP) measurements on the concrete surface for evaluation of corrosion rate (or corrosion levels) of reinforcing steel in concrete. A series of experimental study is performed to measure HCP (or corrosion potential, Ecorr) and corrosion current density (icorr) of reinforcing steel in concrete cube specimens, with a side length of 200 mm. Various corrosion levels in a range of 0% to 20% of the test specimens are accelerated by impressing current to the reinforcing steel in concrete immersed in 3.0 % NaCl solution. HCP is measured in accordance with ASTM C876-15, and corrosion current density is determined by using the Stern-Geary equation and measured polarization resistance measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). As a result, a numerical formula that relates HCP and icorr in the test specimen is established by a regression analysis of the measured data in this study. It is observed that HCP is linearly correlated with log(icorr) with a R2 greater than 0.87, which is less affected by the experimental variables such as concrete mixture proportion, diameter of reinforcing steel and the amount of applied current in this study. These results exhibit that HCP measurements could be effective for evaluation of corrosion rate (or corrosion levels) of reinforcing steel in concrete in the case of exposed to a certain consistent environment.
