  • Cathodic protection is widely used to prevent corrosion of steel materials buried in the underground and sea. As a rectifier for cathodic protection, the conventional phase-controlled rectifiers have been used so far in spite of such shortcomings as large volume, heavy weight and floor power factor. In order to overcome such disadvantages, this paper proposes a new module-type switching rectifier for cathodic protection, which is composed of two parts, namely, AC/DC converter and module- type DC/DC converter. The AC/DC converter is a single-phase IGBT PWM rectifier, thus resulting in almost unity power factor and controlled DC output voltage. The module-type DC/DC converter operates under ZVS/ZCS switching condition to permit high frequency switching operation. It enables to use high-frequency transformer for electrical isolation, thus reducing volume and weight of overall system and improving system efficiency. It should be anticipated that the proposed rectifier techniques apply to the similar technical areas.

  • With the increasing popularity of renewable generation systems and the advancement of power electronics, DC distribution systems have recently received considerable research attention. DC distribution has numerous advantages, including reliability, power quality, and efficiency. Owing to these advantages, DC distribution has been applied to data centers and power quality-sensitive electronic load conditions. Because grounding electrodes in DC are much more susceptible to corrosion than in AC, the IT system defined in IEC Standard 60364 may be a good candidate for an earthing method for DC distribution systems. In addition, IEC Standard 61557 specifies the requirements for insulation monitoring devices (IMD) for protection of the IT system, which continuously monitors the insulation resistances between the power lines and the earth. This paper discusses the development and evaluation of IMD to promote the reliability of distribution systems and increase safety of humans and facilities.

  • The majority of the described experimental results deal with relatively pure aluminium. Variations were made in the pretreatment of the aluminum substrates and an investigation was performed on the resulting changes in oxide layer composition and chemistry. Subsequently, the bonding behavior of the surfaces was investigated by using model adhesion molecules. These molecules were chosen to represent the bonding functionality of an organic polymer. They were applied onto the pretreated surfaces as a monolayer and the bonding behavior was studied using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. A direct and clear relation was found between the hydroxyl fraction on the oxide surfaces and the amount of molecules that subsequently bonded to the surface. Moreover, it was found that most bonds between the oxide surface and organic functional groups are not stable in the presence of water. The best performance was obtained using molecules, which are capable of chemisorption with the oxide surface. Finally, it was found that freshly prepared relatively pure aluminum substrates, which are left in air, rapidly lose their bonding capacity towards organic functional groups. This can be attributed to the adsorption of contamination and water to the oxide surface. In addition the adhesion of a typical epoxy-coated aluminum system was investigated during exposure to water at different temperatures. The coating was found to quite rapidly lose its adhesion upon exposure to water. This rapid loss of adhesion corresponds well with the data where it was demonstrated that the studied epoxy coating only bonds through physisorptive hydrogen bonding, these bonds not being stable in the presence of water. After the initial loss the adhesion of the coating was however found to recover again and even exceeded the adhesion prior to exposure. The improvement could be ascribed to the growth of a thin oxyhydroxide layer on the aluminum substrate, which forms a new, water-stable and stronger bond with the epoxy coating. Two routes for improvement of adhesion are finally decribed including an interphasial polymeric thin layer and a treatment in boiling water of the substrate before coating takes place. The adhesion properties were finely also studied as a function of the Mg content of the alloys. It was shown that an enrichment of Mg in the oxide could take place when Mg containing alloys are heat-treated. It is expected that for these alloys the (hydr)oxide fraction also depends on the pre-treatment and on the distribution of magnesium as compared to the aluminium hydroxides, with a direct impact on adhesive properties.

  • Because of the continuous growth of energy consumption, and also tile tendency to site power lines and pipelines along the same routes, the close proximity of high voltage structures and metallic pipelines has become more and more frequent. Recently, the results of assessment about a system integrity are needed in korea also when a gas pipeline is running parallel with high voltage power line in same submarine tunnel, Therefore, we analyze the system integrity(AC corrosion of pipe, melting of pipeline coating, safety of insulation flange, especially cathodic protection system which are rectifier and CI(cathodic Isolator)) resulting from the influence of high voltage power system.

  • In this study, to determine whether it is possible to apply Polyethylene (PE) compound pipe, which was developed to solve the problem caused by the corrosion of the fire protection piping currently in usein water based fire extinguishing systems, we performed an actual mockup fire test. Since no test standard was available related to the developed compound pipe, we compared and analyzed domestic and international technical materials and test standards and selected suitable fire test standards to evaluate the performance of the PE compound pipe. we applied two fire test standards to the PE compound pipe, viz. those for CPVC and metallic pipes, and conducted a total of 6 experiments to evaluate its performance. According to the results of the first and second fire tests based on the test standard for the CPVC pipe, neither the fitting nor the piping was damaged or deformed and no leakage was observed in the pressure test, which was performed for 5 minutes. For the fire test based on the metallic pipe test standard, a total of 4 experiments were conducted. The first two experiments were conducted to simulate the wet piping system. In the results of this fire test, neither leakage nor rupture was observed from the PE compound pipe and no damage was caused, such as the secession of the PE material. However, in the next two experiments, which simulated the dry system, the PE compound pipe suffered damage and rupture, including deformation before the fire fighting water was discharged. Therefore, we found that the piping performance of the PE compound pipe did not undergo any deterioration, including fusion, deformation, or damage, in the wet piping system simulated fire test.

  • It is known that buried rebars inside concrete structures are protected from corrosion due to passive layer. It is very important to delay the timing of corrosion or evaluate a detection of corrosion initiation for the purpose of cost-beneficiary service life of a structure. In this study, corrosion monitoring was performed on concrete specimens considering 3 levels of cover depth(60 mm, 45 mm, and 30 mm), W/C(water to cement) ratio(40.0%, 50.0%, and 60.0%) and chloride concentration(0.0%, 3.5%, and 7.0%). OCP(Open Circuit Potential) was measured using agar-based socket type sensors. The OCP measurement showed the consistent behavior where the potential was reduced in wet conditions and it was partially recovered in dry conditions. In the case of 30 mm of cover depth for most W/C ratio cases, the lowest OCP value was measured and rapid OCP recovery was evaluated in increasing cover depth from 30 mm to 45 mm, since cover depth was an effective protection against chloride ion ingress. As the chloride concentration increased, the effect on the cover depth tended to be more dominant than the that of W/C ratio. After additional monitoring and physical evaluation of chloride concentration after specimen dismantling, the proposed system can be improved with increasing reliability of the corrosion monitoring.

  • Austenitic stainless steels and Ni-base alloys are widely used as structural materials for major components and piping system in pressurized water reactors (PWRs). These austenitic alloys are known to be susceptible to environmental assisted cracking (EAC), such as environmentally-assisted fatigue (EAF) and primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) during long-term exposure to PWR primary water environment. In this paper, the current understanding on the phenomena and mechanisms of these EAC are briefly introduced using experimental results and literature review. The mechanisms for EAF and PWSCC for austenitic stainless steels and Ni-base alloys are discussed. Currently, austenitic stainless steels are known to be more susceptible to EAF, while less susceptible to PWSCC than Ni-base alloys. The possible explanations to such behaviors are proposed and discussed in view of the role of hydrogen and internal oxidation.

  • An improved water chemistry technique was studied to reduce radioactivity build-up in reactor coolant system. The technique is convering the current coordinated lithium-boron chemistry regime to the elevated lithium chemistry regime in order to maintain high pH. Correlations between reactor coolant pH and radioactivity build-up were analized by using pH data from domestic PWRs. Consequently, it was founded that high pH chemistry was moer effective for radioactivity build-up reduction than current chemistry regime. This fact had revealed that much portion of reactor coolant corrosion products were nickel ferrite rather than magnetite, and that pH value ranging 7.0-7.4 was appropriate for high-pH chemistry operation.
