Steel corrosion induces structural deterioration of concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs), and any potential extreme action on a corroded CFST would pose a severe threat. This paper presents a comprehensive investigation on the lateral impact behaviour of CFSTs suffering from localised pitting corrosion damage. A refined finite element analysis model is developed for the simulation of locally corroded CFSTs subjected to lateral impact loads, which takes into account the strain rate effects on concrete and steel materials as well as the random nature of corrosion pits, i.e., the distribution patterns and the geometric characteristics. Full-range nonlinear analysis on the lateral impact behaviour in terms of loading and deforming time-history relations, nonlinear material stresses, composite actions, and energy dissipations are presented for CFSTs with no corrosion, uniform corrosion and pitting corrosion, respectively. Localised pitting corrosion is found to pose a more severe deterioration on the lateral impact behaviour of CFSTs due to the plastic deformation concentration, the weakened confinement and the reduction in energy absorption capacity of the steel tube. An extended parametric study is then carried out to identify the influence of the key parameters on the lateral impact behaviour of CFSTs with localised pitting corrosion. Finally, simplified design methods considering the features of pitting corrosion are proposed to predict the dynamic flexural capacity of locally pitted CFSTs subjected to lateral impact loads, and reasonable accuracy is obtained.
This paper presents a new methodology to evaluate the load carrying capacity of deteriorated non-slender concrete bridge pier columns by construction of the full P-M interaction diagrams. The proposed method incorporates the actual material properties of deteriorated columns, and accounts for amount of corrosion and exposed corroded bar length, concrete loss, loss of concrete confinement and strength due to stirrup deterioration, bond failure, and type of stresses in the corroded reinforcement. The developed structural model and the damaged material models are integrated in a spreadsheet for evaluating the load carrying capacity for different deterioration stages and/or corrosion amounts. Available experimental and analytical data for the effects of corrosion on short columns subject to axial loads combined with moments (eccentricity induced) are used to verify the accuracy of proposed model. It was observed that, for the limited available experimental data, the proposed model is conservative and is capable of predicting the load carrying capacity of deteriorated reinforced concrete columns with reasonable accuracy. The proposed analytical method will improve the understanding of effects of deterioration on structural members, and allow engineers to qualitatively assess load carrying capacity of deteriorated reinforced concrete bridge pier columns.
This paper presents the effects of corrosion environments of failure pressure model for buried pipelines on failure prediction by using a failure probability. The FORM (first order reliability method) is used in order to estimate the failure probability in the buried pipelines with corrosion defects. The effects of varying distribution types of random variables such as normal, lognormal and Weibull distributions on the failure probability of buried pipelines are systematically investigated. It is found that the failure probability for the MB31G model is larger than that for the B31G model. And the failure probability is estimated as the largest for the Weibull distribution and the smallest for the normal distribution. The effect of data scattering in corrosion environments on failure probability is also investigated and it is recognized that the scattering of wall thickness and yield strength of pipeline affects the failure probability significantly. The normalized margin is defined and estimated. Furthermore, the normalized margin is used to predict the failure probability using the fitting lines between failure probability and normalized margin.

Most of the diffusion models of chloride ions in reinforced concrete (RC) elements proposed in literature are related to an isotropic homogeneous semi-infinite medium. This assumption reduces the mathematical complexity, but it is correct only for plane RC elements. This work proposes a comparison between the diffusion model of chloride ions in RC circular columns and in RC slab elements. The durability of RC cylindric elements estimated with the circular model instead of the plane model is shown to be shorter. Finally, a guideline is formulated to properly use the standard and more simple plane model instead of the circular one to estimate the time to corrosion initiation of cylindrical RC elements.

The deterioration of concrete structure due to corrosion of the reinforcement has created big financial losses on the overall industries. The volume expansion of the corrosion products causes internal pressure to concrete wall around reinforcing bar. If the maximum principal stress induced by internal pressure exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete at any point of time, a crack forms at any point of material. Therefore, in terms of life assessment of concrete structure, it is very important to predict the amount of corrosion products which induces initial concrete cracking. With this objective, this paper proposes the critical amount of corrosion products at interface between reinforcement and concrete using finite element analysis. If an actual survey of corrosion rates could be made, the model might supply information for condition assessment of existing concrete structure. As the mechanical properties of corrosion product and instantaneous geometry of corroded steel are considered in the analysis, the value obtained will be more realistic.

Chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcement is one of the main factors which cause the deterioration of concrete structures. Durability and service lives of the concrete sturctures should be predicted in order to minimize the risk of corrosion of reinforcement. The objective of this study is to suggest the basis of analytical methods of predicting the corrosion threhold time of concrete structures. Based on the chemistry and physics of chloride ion transport and corrosion process, chloride intrusion with various exposure conditions, variability of diffusivity and transport of pore water in concrete are taken into consideration in applying finite element formulation to the predicion of corrosion threhold time. The effects of main factors on the prediction of chloride intrusion and corrosion threhold time are examined. In addition, after chloride diffusivities of several mixture proportions with different parameters are measured by chloride diffusion test, the exemplary anayses of corrosion threhold time of those mixture proportions are carried out.
Physical properties of water, such as dielectric constant and ionic product, significantly vary with the density of water. In the supercritical conditions, since density of water widely varies with pressure, pressure has a strong influence on physical properties of water. Dielectric constant represents a character of water as a solvent, which determines solubility of an inorganic compound including metal oxides. Dissociation equilibrium of an acid is also strongly dependent on water density. Dissociation constant of acid rises with increased density of water, resulting in drop of pH. Density of water and the density-related physical properties of water, therefore, are the major governing factors of corrosion and environmentally assisted cracking of metals in supercritical aqueous solutions. This paper discusses importance of "physical properties of water" in understanding corrosion and cracking behavior of alloys in supercritical water environments, based on experimental data and estimated solubility of metal oxides. It has been pointed out that the water density can have significant effects on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of metals in supercritical water, when dissolution of metal plays the key role in the cracking phenomena.
The objective of this study was to evaluate total current under steady-state conditions for a material undergoing corrosion using the electrochemical frequency modulation (EFM) technique, taking into account the presence of solution resistance and double layer capacitance. The analysis involving linearization of the Tafel curve allowed for the estimation of corrosion parameters. Results showed that the output signal was dependent on fundamental frequencies and their multiples. In addition, the output signal almost manifested itself at frequencies that were sums of fundamental frequencies of the applied sinusoidal signal. The harmonics calculated showed a significant shift from the principal frequency of input signals. The investigation involved the influence of corrosion current and anode-to-cathode Tafel slope ratio on faradaic and non-faradaic currents (including the average and RMS). The model presented showed both qualitative and quantitative improvements over the previously developed EFM technique that ignored the influence of solution resistance and the double layer capacitance while assuming the applied DC potential corresponded to the corrosion potential of the corroding material.
This paper deals with the characteristics of reinforcement corrosion in concrete beams under the influence of sustained loads. The evolution and distribution laws of the reinforcement corrosion were measured periodically over time. The results show that sustained load exhibits a pronounced exacerbating effect on the reinforcement corrosion, and enlarges the nonuniformity level of corrosion as the load level increases. Accompanied with the continuous formation of the rust, the corrosion rate was also observed to be highly nonlinear and time-dependent. Moreover, to visually and quantitatively analyze the distribution of reinforcement corrosion, the 3D scanning technology combined with the probability statistics analysis was adopted, and the observed nonuniformity can be well described by the Gumbel distribution. Finally, an approach based on the three-phase spherical model was proposed to estimate the reinforcement corrosion, taking account of the effects of sustained load on the changes of concrete porosity and oxygen diffusivity.

The aim of this paper is to study corrosion inhibition of Aluminum with Capparis decidua extract. The study was performed in a 1.0 M solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and was monitored both by measuring mass loss and by using electrochemical and polarization methods. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique was also applied for surface morphology analysis. The results revealed high inhibition efficiency of Capparis decidua extract. Our data also determined that efficiency is governed by temperature and concentration of extract. Optimum (88.2%) inhibitor efficiency was found with maximum extract concentration at 45 o C. The results also showed a slight diminution of aluminum dissolution when the temperature is low. Based on the Langmuir adsorption model, Capparis decidua adsorption on the aluminum surface shows a high regression coefficient value. From the results, the activation enthalpy (∆H#) and activation entropy (∆S#) were estimated and discussed. In conclusion, the study clearly shows that Capparis decidua extract acted against aluminum corrosion in acidic media by forming a protective film on top of the aluminum surface.
