  • This study examined the carbon corrosion at Pt/C interface in proton exchange membrane fuel cell environment. The Pt nano particles were electrodeposited on carbon substrate, and then the corrosion behavior of the carbon electrode was examined. The carbon electrodes with Pt nano electrodeposits exhibited the higher oxidation rate and lower oxidation overpotential compared with that of the electrode without Pt. This phenomenon was more active at $75^{\circ}C$ than $25^{\circ}C$. In addition, the current transients and the corresponding power spectral density (PSD) of the carbon electrodes with Pt nano electrodeposits were much higher than those of the electrode without Pt. The carbon corrosion at Pt/C interface was highly accelerated by Pt nano electrodeposits. Furthermore, the polarization and power density curves of PEMFC showed degradation in the performance due to a deterioration of cathode catalyst material and Pt dissolution.

  • Some feasibility studies are conducted to produce an advanced ceramic coating, which reveals superior chemical and mechanical strength, on metal base structure used in chemical plant. This advanced coating on metallic frame can replace ceramic delivery pipe and reaction chamber used in chemical plant, which are operated in hi-temperature and corrosive/erosive environment. An dual spraying is adopted to reduce the residual stress in order to increase the coating thickness and the residual stress is estimated by in-situ manner. Then new methodology is tried to form special coating of yttrium aluminum garnet(YAG), which reveals hi-strength and low-creep rates at hi-temperature, superior anti-corrosion property, hi-stability against Alkali-Vapor corrosion, and so on, on iron base structure. To verify the formation of YAG during thermal spraying, XRD(X ray diffraction) technique was used.

  • Feasibility of using PE sheet laminated CSP(Corrugated steel pipe) to sewers were tested via corrosion and abrasion tests for PE sheet laminated CSP; 1) corrosion test for PE film and PE coated plate, 2) corrosion test for joint of PE sheet laminated CSP, 3) corrosion test for outside of PE sheet laminated CSP, and 4) abrasion test for inside of PE sheet laminated CSP. The results for the corrosion and abrasion tests are as follows. 1. Results for corrosion tests on PE films and zinc coated steel plates that were coated with PE films show that the surfaces of both PE were not changed compared to those of original PE samples. Furthermore, PE films maintained strong adhesion on the steel plates even though they were exposed to sewage and seawater provided cutting planes of the steel plates were treated with molding. But, results for corrosion tests on the spots that were previously cut off by a knife and a cutting planes of the steel plates were treated without molding show that steel plates have been corroded if they were exposed to sewage and seawater. 2. Results for corrosion tests on joints of PE sheet laminated corrugated steel using sewage show that gathering rust was observed at cutting plane of PE sheet laminated corrugated steel after 180 days, but PE film was not flaked off. However, PE film at cutting plane was flaked off when PE sheet laminated corrugated steel was exposed to seawater. Furthermore, flaking process was severely progressed at lockseam points of which the surfaces were not smooth. 3. Results for laying PE sheet laminated corrugated steel under the ground show that the surface of untouched PE film was almost identical to that of original PE film. However, the spots that were previously cut off by a knife and a cutting plane of PE sheet laminated corrugated steel have flaked off. 4. As a result of abrasion tests conducted with PE sheet laminated corrugated steel and sand, brilliance and thickness of PE was not greatly changed under the severe abrasion conditions. Therefore, the durability of PE sheet laminated corrugated steel for abrasion was determined to be good.

  • Due to its good corrosion and heat resistance with excellent mechanical properties, 304L stainless steel is commonly used in the fabrication of spent nuclear fuel dry storage canisters. However, welds are sensitive to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) due to residual stress generation. Although SCC resistance can be improved by stress relieving the weld and changing the chloride environment, it is difficult to change corrosion environment for certain applications. Stress control in the weld can improve SCC resistance. Ultrasonic shot peening (USP) needs further research as compressive residual stresses and microstructure changes due to plastic deformation may play a role in improving SCC resistance. In this study, 304L stainless steel was welded to generate residual stresses and exposed to a chloride environment after USP treatment to improve SCC properties. Effects of USP on SCC resistance and crack growth of specimens with compressive residual stresses generated more than 1 mm from the surface were studied. In addition, correlations of compressive residual stress, grain size, intergranular corrosion properties, and pitting potential with crack propagation rate were determined and the improvement of SCC properties by USP was analyzed.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a new in-situ observation method and instrument in micro-scale to investigate the mechanism of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) initiation of Ni-base alloys in a high temperature water environment of pressurized water reactors (PWRs). A laser confocal microscope (LCM), an autoclave with diamond window view port, and a slow strain-rate tester with primary water circulation loop system were components of the instrument. Diamond window, one of the core components of the instrument, was selected based on its optical, chemical, and mechanical properties. LCM was used to observe the specimen in micro-scale, considering the experimental condition of a high-temperature primary water environment. Using in-situ method and instrument, it is possible to observe oxidation and deformation of specimen surface in micro-scale through the diamond window in a high-temperature primary water in real-time. The in-situ method and instrument developed in this work can be utilized to investigate effects of various factors on SCC initiation in a high-temperature water environment.

  • Cyclic wet and dry conditions in the marine environment structures corrosion is known to be the fastest rising. For that reason, accelerated corrosion test methods for the reproduction of tidal environment has been actively conducted. However, many studies have estimated threshold value for steel corrosion or concentrated in chloride penetration analysis. In this study, cyclic wet and dry conditions to reproduce the structure of the environment in accelerated corrosion and chloride penetration test analysis was performed. Corrosion was determined by the result of reinforcement corrosion monitoring based on galvanic potential measurement and half-cell potential method. Accelerated corrosion test results for each formulation was different corrosion periods, the order OPC> FA> BS> High-strength concrete. FEM durability interpretation program DuCOM was conducted under the same conditions as in accelerated corrosion test. The experimental RCPT tests demonstrated the validity of the result.
