The pitting corrosion and inhibition studies of AZ31B magnesium alloy were investigated in the alkaline solution (pH12) with chloride and inhibitors. The corrosion behavior of passive film with/without Cl- in the alkaline electrolyte were conducted by polarization curve and immersion tests in the presence of various additives (inhibitors) to clarify the inhibition efficiency of pitting corrosion at higher potential region. Critical concentration of pitting corrosion for Mg alloy was evaluated with 0.005 M NaCl in 0.01 M NaOH on the anodic polarization behavior. Critical pitting of AZ31B Mg alloy in 0.01 M NaOH is a function of chlorides; Epit = - 1.36 - 0.2 log [Cl-]. When the Sodium Benzoate (SB) was only used as an inhibitor, a few metastable pits developed on the Mg surface by an immersion test despite no pitting corrosion on the polarization curve meaning that adsorption of SB on the surface is insufficient protection from pitting corrosion in the presence of chloride. The role of SB and Sodium Dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) inhibitors for the Mg alloy surface in the presence of chloride was suppressed from pitting corrosion to co-adsorb on the Mg alloy surface with strong formation of passive film preventing pitting corrosion.
This paper aims to investigate the strength degradation of reinforced concrete piers wrapped with steel plates which corrode at the pier base by employing a three dimensional elasto-plastic finite element formulation. The prediction accuracy of the employed finite element analysis method is firstly verified by comparing the analytical results with test results. Then, a series of parametric studies is carried out to investigate the effects of steel plate's corrosion position along width direction, corrosion depth along plate thickness, corrosion range along width direction, and steel plate-concrete bonding degradation on the strength of the piers. It is observed that the strength degradation of the piers is closely related to steel plate's corrosion position, corrosion depth and corrosion range in the case of local corrosion on the webs. In contrast, when the base of flanges corrodes, the strength degradation of the piers is only related to steel plate's corrosion depth and corrosion range, and the influence of corrosion position on the strength degradation is very gentle. Furthermore, the strength of the piers decreases with the degradation of steel plate-concrete bonding behavior. Finally, the maximum strength of the piers obtained from numerical analysis corresponding to different bonding behavior is compared with theoretical results within an accepted error.
This paper aims to study the compressive behavior of circular hollow and concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns under simulated marine atmospheric corrosion. The specimens after salt spray corrosion were tested under axial compressive load. Steel grade and corrosion level were mainly considered in the study. The mechanical behavior of circular CFST specimens is compared with that of the corresponding hollow ones. Design methods for circular hollow and concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns are modified to consider the effect of marine atmospheric corrosion. The results show that linear fitting curves could be used to present the relationship between corrosion rate and the mechanical properties of steel after simulated marine atmospheric corrosion. The ultimate strength of hollow steel tubular and CFST columns decrease with the increase of corrosion rate while the ultimate displacement of those are hardly affected by corrosion rate. Increasing corrosion rate would change the failure of CFST stub column from ductile failure to brittle failure. Corrosion rate would decrease the ductility indexes of CFST columns, rather than those of hollow steel tubular columns. The confinement factor ${\xi}$ of CFST columns decreases with the increase of corrosion rate while the ratio between test value and nominal value shows an opposite trend. With considering marine atmospheric corrosion, the predicted axial strength of hollow steel tubular and CFST columns by Chinese standard agree well with the tested values while the predictions by Japanese standard seem conservative.

The effect of fluid flow on corrosion and erosion-corrosion of metal is a well-recognized phenomenon in pipelines and machinery equipment, and so on. Not only are fluid hydrodynamics important, but also the corrosiveness of the process or production stream affects the corrosion system. Recent research demonstrates that it is possible to erosion-corrosion(E/C) phenomena in terms of hydrodynamics, electrochemical corrosion kinetics and film growth/removal phenomena. Stress corrosion cracking behavior under cavitation erosion-corrosion of mild steel(SS41) was investigated of base metal and weldment under loaded stress. Main result obtained are as follows : 1) The cavitation erosion sensitivity of base metal affected weight loss is more susceptive than heat affected zone, 2) The corrosion sensitivity affected weight loss of welding heat cycle is less susceptive on stress corrosion under cavitation erosion-corrosion than stress corrosion.

In the present study, the corrosion behavior of aluminum Al-7075 tempered (T-6 condition) alloy was evaluated by immersion testing and electrochemical testing in 1.75% and 3.5% NaCl environment at acidic, neutral and basic pH. The data obtained by both immersion tests and electrochemical corrosion tests (potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests) present that the corrosion rate of the alloy specimens is minimum for the pH=7 condition of the solution due to the formation of dense and well adherent thin protective oxide layer. Whereas the solutions with acidic and alkaline pH cause shift in the corrosion behavior of aluminum alloy to more active domains aggravated by the constant flux of acidic and alkaline ions (Cl- and OH-) in the media which anodically dissolve the Al matrix in comparison to precipitated intermetallic phases (cathodic in nature) formed due to T6 treatment. Consequently, the pitting behavior of the alloy, as observed by cyclic polarization tests, shifts to more active regions when pH of the solutions changes from neutral to alkaline environment due to localized dissolution of the matrix in alkaline environment that ingress by diffusion through the pores in the oxide film. Microscopic analysis also strengthens the results obtained by immersion corrosion testing and electrochemical corrosion testing as the study examines the corrosion behavior of this alloy under a systematic evaluation in marine environment.

Due to increase of air pollution substance, such as $SO_2$,$SO_3$, H2S ,CO, HCI, $Cl_2$ and so on, the operating environment of mechanical equipment and facilities like generating plants, ships, metal structure etc., are acidified and corroded. In these environments, the crevice corrosion of marine facilities frequently occurs at crevice like jointed bolt, gasket or sealant, riveted plates, contact of metal with non-metallic solids etc. Therefore, this paper was studied on the crevice corrosion behavior of mild steel(SS 400) in marine environment. In a variety of NaCl solutions, the aspect of he .crevice corrosion and polarization behavior under the crevice corrosion was investigated. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) Under crevice corrosion, the open circuit potential become less treble as the concentration of NaCl solution increased. 2) The corrosion current density of mild steel was high drained as the concentration of NaCl solution increased by 3.5%, but in the concentration increased over 3.5%, the corrosion current density was low drained. 3) The crevice corrosion is more sensitive to the synergy effect of dissolved oxygen and NaCl.

Due to the electric power shortage in summer season and regulation of freon refrigerant, the application of gas absorption refrigeration and hot water systems are considerably increasing trend. But, this system consists of condenser, heat exchanger, supply pipe and radiator etc. which are easily corroded by acidity and dissolved oxygen and gases. In result, this system occurs scale attachment and corrosion damage like pitting and crevice corrosion. In this study, electrochemical polarization test of heat exchanger tubing material (copper, aluminium brass, 30% cupronickel(30% Cu-Ni)) was carried out in 60% lithium bromide solution at $95^{\circ}C$. As a result of polarization test, corrosion behavior by impressed potential and local corrosion. such as galvanic corrosion, pitting corrosion behavior, of tubing materials was investigated. The main results obtained are as follows: (1) The effect of pitting and crevice corrosion control of 30% cupronickel in 60% LiBr solution at $95^{\circ}C$ is very excellent. (2) Dissimilar metal corrosion of 30% cupronickel coupling to aluminium bronze is the most sensitive. (3) Current density behavior of tube materials by impressed potential is high in order of copper > aluminium brass > 30% cupronickel.

The objective of this study was to determine effects of temperatures and pH of sodium chloride solution with MgCl2 ions on corrosion resistance of duplex stainless-steel X2CrNiMoN22-5-3 (DSS) and Ti 6Al 2Nb1Ta1Mo (Ti). Effects of sodium chloride concentration on corrosion resistance were also studied. Corrosion behavior and pitting morphology of duplex stainless steel (DSS) and Ti alloys were evaluated through potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was found that a decrease in pH significantly reduced the corrosion resistance of both alloys. Changes in chloride concentration and temperature had more substantial impact on corrosion behavior of DSS than on Ti alloys. Pitting corrosion was formed on DSS samples under all conditions, whereas crevice corrosion was developed on Ti samples with the presence of magnesium chloride at 90 ℃. In conclusion, magnesium chloride ions in an exceedingly strong acidity solution appear to interact with re-passivation process at the surface of these alloys and influence the resulting surface topography.
Polarization behavior and corrosion inhibition of copper in acidic chloride solutions containing benzotriazole were studied. Pourbaix diagrams constructed for copper in NaCl solutions with different BTAH concentrations were used to understand the polarization behavior. Open circuit potential (OCP) depended not only on chloride concentration, but also on whether a CuBTA layer was formed on the copper surface. Only when the (pH, OCP) was located well in the CuBTA region of the Pourbaix diagram, a stable corrosion inhibiting CuBTA layer was formed, which was confirmed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and a long-term corrosion test. The OCP for the CuBTA layer decreased logarithmically with increasing [Cl-] activity in the solution. A minimum BTAH concentration required to form a CuBTA layer for a given NaCl concentration and pH were determined from the Pourbaix diagram. It was found that 320 ppm BTAH solution could be used to form a corrosion-inhibiting CuBTA layer inside the corrosion pit in the sprinkler copper tube, successfully reducing water leakage rate of copper tubes. These experimental results could be used to estimate water chemistry inside a corrosion pit.
