An Adaptive Filtering Method for Enhancement of Inter-color Plane Estimation in HEVC RExt RGB Images (HEVC RExt RGB 영상의 색평면 간 예측 향상을 위한 적응적 필터링 기법)

  • HEVC RExt(High Efficiency Video Coding Range Extension) set a goal to support RGB/YUV 4:2:2 4:4:4 color sampling and over 10 bit-depth images. Unlike the previous 4:2:0 color sampling images, RGB images have the high correlation in inter-color planes. Using this characteristic, some methods which are contributed in JCT-VC standardization meetings estimate the pixel values of inter-color plane. But when we use the estimation of inter-color plane in RGB images, high frequency components of RGB images are caused to reduce the coding efficiency because they usually have the low inter-color plane correlation. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an adaptive low pass filtering method in the inter-color plane estimation. Using this method, we can improve the estimation efficiency of inter-color plane in RGB images. The experimental results with HEVC RExt RGB test sequences show that the proposed method has 0.6% BD(Bjontegaard Distortion)-rate gain and some increased complexity compared to the previous inter-color plane estimation method.

  • This paper proposes an efficient scheme to estimate the channel parameters such as channel gain and delay for the IEEE802.15.4a LR-UWB systems. Sliding window (SW) method is generally used for the channel estimation of LR-UWB systems, which extracts the channel parameters by performing the cross-correlation with the repeatedly transmitted signal. However, the SW method experiences the severe performance degradation because the cross-correlation is performed just once for the received signal. In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation scheme, which can achieve a great performance gain by performing the cross-correlation repeatedly with the repeated receive signal. In order to verify the performance gain of the proposed scheme, we performed the intensive simulation with the Saleh-Valenzuela channel model. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has a performance improvement of 4dB compared to the conventional SW channel estimation scheme.

Low Complexity Frequency Offset Estimation Using Partial Correlation (부분상관을 이용한 저 복잡도의 주파수 오차 추정기법)

  • In wireless communication systems, a frequency offset exist at the received signal due to the transmitter-receiver oscillator mismatch and Doppler effect in mobile environments. Those offsets rotate the received signal's phase and degrade the receiver performance. Hence, estimation and compensation of the frequency offset is crucial at the receiver. This paper proposes a new frequency offset estimation technique based on partial correlation. The proposed method requires less computational complexity than that of the conventional method. In addition, since the proposed one can estimate a wide range of frequency offset without estimation accuracy loss, the application of the method is desirable for the communication environments that have a large frequency offset. In order to verify the performance of our proposed scheme, a series of computer simulations have been carried out and compared against those of the conventional method.

  • This paper presents a new adaptive fast motion estimation algorithm along with its architecture. The conventional algorithm such as full - search algorithm, three step algorithm have some disadvantages which are related to the amount of computation, the quality of image and the implementation of hardware, the proposed algorithm uses spatial correlation and a slope of motion vector in order to reduce the amount of computation and preserve good image quality, The proposed algorithm is better than the conventional Block Matching Algorithm(BMA) with regard to the amount of computation and image quality. Also, we propose an efficient at chitecture to implement the proposed algorithm. It is suitable for real time processing application.

Audio Watermarking Using Independent Component Analysis

  • This paper presents a blind watermark detection scheme for an additive watermark embedding model. The proposed estimation-correlation-based watermark detector first estimates the embedded watermark by exploiting non-Gaussian of the real-world audio signal and the mutual independence between the host-signal and the embedded watermark and then a correlation-based detector is used to determine the presence or the absence of the watermark. For watermark estimation, blind source separation (BSS) based on independent component analysis (ICA) is used. Low watermark-to-signal ratio (WSR) is one of the limitations of blind detection with the additive embedding model. The proposed detector uses two-stage processing to improve the WSR at the blind detector; the first stage removes the audio spectrum from the watermarked audio signal using linear predictive (LP) filtering and the second stage uses the resulting residue from the LP filtering stage to estimate the embedded watermark using BSS based on ICA. Simulation results show that the proposed detector performs significantly better than existing estimation-correlationbased detection schemes.

Multidimensional Spectral Estimation by Modal Decomposition

  • We consider here the problem of spectral estimation of multidimensional wide sense stationary (WSS) random process. A method, employing a special difference equation of correlation function, is proposed to solve the problem of multidimensional spectral estimation. In this approach, the special difference equation of correlation function is derived by modal decomposition method. Maximum likelihood estimator and Kalman filter are used to estimate the model parameters of the difference equation and the decomposed spectral residues. An algorithm is presented to estimate the multidimensional spectral density. According to the result of the simulation, these methods are feasible to estimate the spectral density of WSS process, which is realized by finite dimensional multivariable lineal system driven by white noise.

Maximum Likelihood and Signal-Selective TDOA Estimation for Noncircular Signals

  • This paper addresses the issue of time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) estimation for complex noncircular signals. First, under the wide-sense stationary assumption, we derive the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator and the Cramer-Rao lower bound for Gaussian noncircular signals in Gaussian circular noise. The ML estimator uses the second-order statistics information of a noncircular signal more comprehensively when compared with the cross-correlation (CC) and the conjugate CC estimators. Further, we present a scheme to modify the traditional signal-selective TDOA methods for noncircular signals on the basis of the cyclostationarity of man-made signals. This scheme simultaneously exploits the information contained in both the cyclic cross-correlation (CCC) and the conjugate CCC of a noncircular signal.

A Hierarchical Motion Estimation Algorithm Using Correlation of Motion Fields

  • A new three step hierarchical search algorithm for motion estimation is proposed. The proposed algorithm exploits the motion correlation of spatially neighboring blocks and the motion continuity of temporally neighboring blocks to alleviate the local minimum problem in the first step of the three step hierarchical search algorithm (3SHS). Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves significant improvements in both estimation accuracy and performance reliability compared with the existing fast block matching algorithm including 3SHS, while maintaining almost the same computational complexity as 3SHS. The proposed scheme also possesses the regularity and simplicity of hardware-oriented features.

  • This study has two objectives. One is developing the runoff model for Hoe-Dong Reservoir basin located at the upstream of Su-Young River in Pusan. To develop the runoff model, basic hydrological parameters - curve number to find effective rainfall, and storage coefficient, etc. - should be estimated. In this study, the effective rainfall was calculated by the SCS method, and the storage coefficient used in the Clark watershed routing was cited from the report of P.E.B. The other is the derivation of transfer function for Hoe-Dong Reservoir basin. The linear, discrete, input-output model which contained six parameters was selected, and the parameters were estimated by the least square method and the correlation function method, respectively. Throughout this study, rainfall and flood discharge data were based on the field observation in 1981.8.22 - 8.23 (typhoon Gladys). It was observed that the Clark watershed routing regenerated the flood hydrograph of typhoon Gladys very well, and this fact showed that the estimated hydrological parameters were relatively correct. Also, the calculated hydrograph by the linear, discrete, input-output model showed good agreement with the regenerated hydrograph at Hoe-Dong Dam site, so this model can be applicable to other small urban areas. Study of Peak Load Demand Estimation Methodology by Pearson Correlation Analysis with Macro-economic Indices and Power Generation Considering Power Supply Interruption

  • Since the late 2000s, there has been growing preparation in South Korea for a sudden reunification of South and North Korea. Particularly in the power industry field, thorough preparations for the construction of a power infrastructure after reunification are necessary. The first step is to estimate the peak load demand. In this paper, we suggest a new peak demand estimation methodology by integrating existing correlation analysis methods between economic indicators and power generation quantities with a power supply interruption model in consideration of power consumption patterns. Through this, the potential peak demand and actual peak demand of the Nation, which experiences power supply interruption can be estimated. For case studies on North Korea after reunification, the potential peak demand in 2015 was estimated at 5,189 MW, while the actual peak demand within the same year was recorded as 2,461 MW. The estimated potential peak demand can be utilized as an important factor when planning the construction of power system facilities in preparation for reunification.
