  • Feature selection has become an essential technique to reduce the dimensionality of data sets. Many features are frequently irrelevant or redundant for the classification tasks. The purpose of feature selection is to select relevant features and remove irrelevant and redundant features. Applications of the feature selection range from text processing, face recognition, bioinformatics, speaker verification, and medical diagnosis to financial domains. In this study, we focus on filter methods based on information entropy : IG (Information Gain), FCBF (Fast Correlation Based Filter), and mRMR (minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance). FCBF has the advantage of reducing computational burden by eliminating the redundant features that satisfy the condition of approximate Markov blanket. However, FCBF considers only the relevance between the feature and the class in order to select the best features, thus failing to take into consideration the interaction between features. In this paper, we propose an improved FCBF to overcome this shortcoming. We also perform a comparative study to evaluate the performance of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we propose a heuristic method to select features using a Two-Phase Markov Blanket-based (TPMB) algorithm. The first phase, filtering phase, of TPMB algorithm works by filtering the obviously redundant features. A non-linear correlation method based on Information theory is used as a metric to measure the redundancy of a feature [1]. In second phase, approximating phase, the Markov Blanket (MB) of a system is estimated by employing the concept of cross entropy to identify the MB. We perform experiments on microarray data and report two popular dataset, AML-ALL [3] and colon tumor [4], in this paper. The experimental results show that the TPMB algorithm can significantly reduce the number of features while maintaining the accuracy of the classifiers.

  • The purpose of the present study is to develop a model for predicting hypercholesterolemia using an integrated set of body fat mass variables based on machine learning techniques, beyond the study of the association between body fat mass and hypercholesterolemia. For this study, a total of six models were created using two variable subset selection methods and machine learning algorithms based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data. Among the various body fat mass variables, we found that trunk fat mass was the best variable for predicting hypercholesterolemia. Furthermore, we obtained the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve value of 0.739 and the Matthews correlation coefficient value of 0.36 in the model using the correlation-based feature subset selection and naive Bayes algorithm. Our findings are expected to be used as important information in the field of disease prediction in large-scale screening and public health research.

  • Management decision-making based on artificial intelligence(AI) plays an important role in helping decision-makers. Business decision-making centered on AI is evaluated as a driving force for corporate growth. AI-based on accurate analysis techniques could support decision-makers in making high-quality decisions. This study proposes an effective decision-making method with the application of multi-label feature selection. In this regard, We present a CFS-BR (Correlation-based Feature Selection based on Binary Relevance approach) that reduces data sets in high-dimensional space. As a result of analyzing sample data and empirical data, CFS-BR can support efficient decision-making by selecting the best combination of meaningful attributes based on the Best-First algorithm. In addition, compared to the previous multi-label feature selection method, CFS-BR is useful for increasing the effectiveness of decision-making, as its accuracy is higher.

  • Cardiovascular diseases is one of the leading causes of death in the world. The objectives of this study were to build various models using sociodemographic variables based on three variable selection methods and seven machine learning algorithms for the identification of hypertension and dyslipidemia and to evaluate predictive powers of the models. In experiments based on full variables and correlation-based feature subset selection methods, our results showed that performance of models using naive Bayes was better than those of models using other machine learning algorithms in both two diseases. In wrapper-based feature subset selection method, performance of models using logistic regression was higher than those of models using other algorithms. Our finding may provide basic data for public health and machine learning fields.

  • Decision tree induction algorithm is one of the most widely used methods in classification problems. However, they could be trapped into a local minimum and have no reasonable means to escape from it if tree algorithm uses top-down search algorithm. Further, if irrelevant or redundant features are included in the data set, tree algorithms produces trees that are less accurate than those from the data set with only relevant features. We propose a hybrid algorithm to generate decision tree that uses genetic programming with sequentially selected features. Correlation-based Feature Selection (CFS) method is adopted to find relevant features which are fed to genetic programming sequentially to find optimal trees at each iteration. The new proposed algorithm produce simpler and more understandable decision trees as compared with other decision trees and it is also effective in producing similar or better trees with relatively smaller set of features in the view of cross-validation accuracy.

  • Over the past decade, the development of the Web explosively increased the data. Feature selection step is an important step in extracting valuable data from a large amount of data. This study proposes a novel opinion mining model based on combining feature selection (FS) methods with Word embedding to vector (Word2vec) and BOW (Bag-of-words). FS methods adopted for this study are CFS (Correlation based FS) and IG (Information Gain). To select an optimal FS method, a number of classifiers ranging from LR (logistic regression), NN (neural network), NBN (naive Bayesian network) to RF (random forest), RS (random subspace), ST (stacking). Empirical results with electronics and kitchen datasets showed that LR and ST classifiers combined with IG applied to BOW features yield best performance in opinion mining. Results with laptop and restaurant datasets revealed that the RF classifier using IG applied to Word2vec features represents best performance in opinion mining.

  • The performance of a network intrusion detection system using the machine learning method depends heavily on the composition and the size of the feature set. The detection accuracy, such as the detection rate or the false positive rate, of the system relies on the feature composition. And the time it takes to train and detect depends on the size of the feature set. Therefore, in order to enable the system to detect intrusions in real-time, the feature set to beused should have a small size as well as an appropriate composition. In this paper, we show that the size of the feature set can be further reduced without decreasing the detection rate through using Pearson correlation coefficient between features along with the multi-objective genetic algorithm which was used to shorten the size of the feature set in previous work. For the evaluation of the proposed method, the experiments to classify 10 kinds of attacks and benign traffic are performed against NSL_KDD data set.

  • As the world is moving towards digitization, data is generated from various sources at a faster rate. It is getting humungous and is termed as big data. The financial sector is one domain which needs to leverage the big data being generated to identify financial risks, fraudulent activities, and so on. The design of predictive models for such financial big data is imperative for maintaining the health of the country's economics. Financial data has many features such as transaction history, repayment data, purchase data, investment data, and so on. The main problem in predictive algorithm is finding the right subset of representative features from which the predictive model can be constructed for a particular task. This paper proposes a correlation-based method using submodular optimization for selecting the optimum number of features and thereby, reducing the dimensions of the data for faster and better prediction. The important proposition is that the optimal feature subset should contain features having high correlation with the class label, but should not correlate with each other in the subset. Experiments are conducted to understand the effect of the various subsets on different classification algorithms for loan data. The IBM Bluemix BigData platform is used for experimentation along with the Spark notebook. The results indicate that the proposed approach achieves considerable accuracy with optimal subsets in significantly less execution time. The algorithm is also compared with the existing feature selection and extraction algorithms.

  • Social media-based communication has become crucial part of our personal and official lives. Therefore, it is no surprise that social media sentiment analysis has emerged an important way of detecting potential customers' sentiment trends for all kinds of companies. However, social media sentiment analysis suffers from huge number of sentiment features obtained in the process of conducting the sentiment analysis. In this sense, this study proposes a novel method by using Bayesian Network. In this model MBFS (Markov Blanket-based Feature Selection) is used to reduce the number of sentiment features. To show the validity of our proposed model, we utilized online review data from Yelp, a famous social media about restaurant, bars, beauty salons evaluation and recommendation. We used a number of benchmarking feature selection methods like correlation-based feature selection, information gain, and gain ratio. A number of machine learning classifiers were also used for our validation tasks, like TAN, NBN, Sons & Spouses BN (Bayesian Network), Augmented Markov Blanket. Furthermore, we conducted Bayesian Network-based what-if analysis to see how the knowledge map between target node and related explanatory nodes could yield meaningful glimpse into what is going on in sentiments underlying the target dataset.
