The purpose of this study is to investigate the physicochemical characteristics of salinization of groundwater at the estern area of Cheju island. For this purpose, the major ions of groundwater, spring water are analyzed. The concentration of $Cl^-$ and Na^++K^+$/ contained in the groundwater at near the coastline are higher than those at inland area away from the coastline. The water quality components of groundwater observed at this area can be classified into 4 types such as Na-Cl, $HCO_3, Na-Cl-HCO_3$ and Ca-HCO$_3$. The concentration ratio of $SO_4^1 to Cl^- is 0.1354(R^2=0.972)$ at this area. This value is very similar with Dittomer's ratio of 0.13. For Na^+, K^+, and Mg^{2+}/ versus Cl^-$, their ratios also show a significant relationship between sea water and groundwater in this area. From the chloride-bicarbonate ratio, it can be estimated that the intrusion distance of seawater from coastline to inland area is 2.8km at Onpyung-Nansan, Sangdo and Pyungdae areas, and 5.4km at Kosung-Susan area. The mixing ratio between seawater and fresh water by the intrusion of seawater is decreased with the distance toward inland from coastline. This ratio(fresh water : seawater) is 80:20 in spring water adjacent the coastlines, Onpyung area and 99.8:0.2 in the well at No.3 of Susan located at inland away from the coastline. The concentration of $Na^+$ observed at field is 25~45% lower than that theoretically calculated by this mixing ratio. Based on the data of EC, the equipotential line of 500$\mu$mhos/cm is located at 4~5km poing at Kosung-Susan area and 2.5km point at the other area. The equation of correlation between $Cl^-$ concentration and EC values is $Cl^-$=0.1927EC-16.683 for the area lower than 500 $\mu$mhos/cm and $Cl^-$=0.2773EC for the area beyond 500 $\mu$mhos/cm.
We investigated the spatial and temporal variations of phytoplankton in Youngil Bay as well as the effect of water physico-chemical parameters. Water samples at three stations were collected and measured monthly from May to November in 2010. The taxa of phytoplankton observed in this study were classified as 33 Bacillariophyceae, 23 Dinophyceae, 1 Euglenophyceae, 2 Crysophyceae and 1 Cryptophyceae. The highest biomass of phytoplankton was observed at inner station in September, which was characterized high concentration of dissolved inorganic phosphate(DIP) in surface water after rainfall. Nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a and phytoplankton biomass values showed the marked trend to decrease from the inner bay to the outer bay. Pearson's correlation co-efficient between salinity and other water parameters including chlorophyll-a, pH and DIP showed the strong negative relationship r=-0.82, r=-0.78 and r=-0.75 (p<0.01), respectively. These results indicate that the water quality of Youngil Bay could be stimulated by nutrient enriched input from Hyeogsan River discharge, and the spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton biomass principally limited to DIP concentration from Hyeogsan river.

The aim of the present study is to define and tentatively to interpret the distribution of polluted water released from Lake Sihwa into the Yellow Sea using Landsat TM. Since the region is an extreme Case 2 water, empirical algorithms for detecting concentration of chlorophyll-a and suspended sediments have limitations. This work focuses on the use of multi-temporal Landsat TM data. We applied PCA to detect evolution of spatial feature of polluted water after release from the lake Sihwa. The PCA results were compared with in situ data, such as chlorophyll-a, suspended sediments, Secchi disk depth(SDD), surface temperature, remote sensing reflectance at six channel of SeaWiFS. Also, the in situ remote sensing reflectance obtained by PRR-600(Profiling Reflectance Radiometer) was compared with PCA results of Landsat TM data sets to find good correlation between first Principal Component and Secchi disk depth($R^2$=0.7631), although other variables did not result in such a good correlation. Therefore, Problems in applying PCA techniques to multi-spectral remotely sensed data were also discussed in this paper.
In this work, we analyzed the effects of drought on the water temperature (WT) of Nakdong river basin major river sections using Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and WT data. The analysis was carried out on a seasonal basis. After calculating the optimal time scale of the SPI through the correlation between the SPI and WT data, we used the copula theory to model the joint probability distribution between the WT and SPI on the optimal time scale. During spring and fall, the possibility of environmental drought caused by high WT increased in most of the river sections. Notably, in summer, the possibility of environmental drought caused by high WT increased in all river sections. On the other hand, in winter, the possibility of environmental drought caused by low WT increased in most river sections. From the risk map, which quantified the sensitivity of WT to the risk of environmental drought, the river sections Nakbon C, Namgang E, and Nakbon K showed increased stress in the water ecosystem due to high WT when drought occurred in summer. When drought occurred in winter, an increased water ecosystem stress caused by falling WT was observed in the river sections Gilan A, Yongjeon A, Nakbon F, Hwanggang B, Nakbon I, Nakbon J, Nakbon K, Nakbon L, and Nakbon M. The methodology developed in this study will be used in the future to quantify the effects of drought on water quality as well as WT.
Extracted from the metropolitan area, the Paldang Lake, which supplies approximately 8 million tons of water, has achieved a BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) of 1.1 mg/L as a result of water quality preservation policies. However, concerning the COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) component that encompasses refractory organic matter, there has been an observable upward trend in concentration. The introduction of refractory organic matter into the water source of Paldang Lake brings potential increments in BOD, generates off-putting tastes and odors in tap water, increases THM (Trihalomethane) formation, and triggers algae proliferation. Moreover, if residual hazardous refractory pollutants persist in aquatic environments, they may induce endocrine disruption and phenomena such as antibiotic resistance. In this study, a monitoring campaign was executed to discern the concentration of refractory organic matter emissions from point and non-point sources within Paldang Lake and its upstream region, with the aim of managing refractory organic matter in Paldang Lake. By comparing refractory organic matter emission concentrations across monitored areas, the elimination efficiency at wastewater treatment plants was assessed. Additionally, employing the Pearson correlation correlation analysis technique, correlations among refractory organic matter indices, antecedent wet days, and antecedent dry days were explored. The concentrations of refractory organic matter in rivers and Paldang Lake exhibited a similar pattern. Wastewater treatment plant effluents exhibited higher concentrations compared to rivers and Paldang Lake. The assessment of refractory organic matter removal at wastewater treatment plants indicated a removal efficiency of 65.73%. However, no significant correlation emerged between refractory organic matter emission concentration and antecedent wet days or priory antecedent dry days. This absence of correlation is attributed to data scarcity, underscoring the need for long-term monitoring and data accumulation.

Concerns about water quality in the Nakdong River have been raised because the Nakdong River will change from a lotic environment to a lentic environmental due to the installation of eight weirs to be constructed as part of the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project. The rapid urbanization and industrialization of the middle and the lower reaches of Nakdong River causes the indiscreet discharge of uncleanly living sewage and industrial wastewater. And the water quality of lower reaches of Nakdong River is getting seriously worse. Owing to the water shortage of Nakdong River and the closing of reaches because of the estuary dyke in the dry season, the velocity of a moving fluid is almost accumulated under 0.03m/sec. Then a pollutant is piled up on the bottom of the river. Polluted sediment is formed and nutrition level of water is increased more and more. The eutrophication state propagated to dark brown or green from eutrophication often comes out. Therefore in this study, we measured Chl. a of chlorophyll sensor (YSI6600V2) and aceton extraction through field observation in the Nakdong River and Samrangjin. And we evaluated the reliability of chlorophyll sensor. In correlation analysis between chlorophyll sensor and aceton extraction, it shows high relation in general. And it also shows high relation among the chlorophyll sensor and aceton extraction of the dominant diatom (Skeletonema costatum), Dinophyta (Prorocentrum minimum) in the Nakdong River estuary by laboratory analysis results.
The objective of this study was to analyze temporal trends of water chemistry and spatial heterogeneity between the dam site (Daecheong Reservoir, S1) and the downstream (S2$\sim$S4) using water quality dataset (obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Korea) during 2000$\sim$2007. Water quality, based on eight physical and chemical parameters, varied largely depending on the years, sampling sites, and the discharge volume. Conductivity and nutrients (TN and TP) showed a decreasing trend in the downstream (S4) rather than the dam site during the monsoon. Spatial variation increased toward downstream (S4) from Daecheong Reservoir (S1). Also, BOD and COD increased toward downstream. Because of input of nutrient and pollutant nearby S1, lentic ecosystem in monsoon, BOD and COD were slightly increased. whereas relatively decreased in S4, lotic ecosystem in monsoon, by dilution effect of nutrient and pollutant by discharge from upper dam, S1. Spatial variation of SS increased toward downstream (S4) by the side of Daecheong Reservoir (S1). Based on the dataset, efficient water quality management in the point source tributary streams is required for better water quality of downstream. Monthly characteristics of DO showed the lowest value in the monsoon that tend to increase water temperature. DO was lowest in October at S1 because turbid water, input to the Daecheong Reservoir in the monsoon affect to the postmonsoon period. In contrast, water temperature increased toward summer monsoon, in spite of some differences showed between S1 and S4 environment. Overall, the characteristics of water quality in downstream region have close correlation with discharge amount of Daecheong Reservoir. Thus, those characteristics can explain that discharge control of upper dam mainly affect to the water quality variation in downstream reach.
Observed trends in climate change, globalization and an aging population have an effect on public health conditions in Korea, prompting a reevaluation of current environmental regulations. In this study, we evaluated the performance of the total coliform (TC) standard, which is the only microbiological standard in the current regulation regime for hot spring water, by estimating correlation with the presence/absence of Legionella, a non-fecal opportunistic pathogen with heat-tolerance. Microbiological data in 7 studies that surveyed Legionella in hot spring waters were subjected to meta-analyses with the odds ratio (OR) as the effect size. The presence/absence of Legionella was significantly correlated to TC levels [OR = 3.1(1.5–6.4, 95% CI), p = 0.002]. Due to there being no direct explanation as to the reason for the occurrence of TC, mesophilic fecal bacteria, being coupled with Legionella presence, the mechanism of the correlation between the two kinds of bacteria was further investigated. Legionella presence was more prevalent with a high heterotrophic plate count [HPC; 4.0(2.2–7.2); p < 0.001] and water temperature [4.3(1.4–13.6), p = 0.011] when the temperature range was <40℃. However, it was reverse-correlated with water temperature when the temperature was >50℃ [0.2(0.1–0.4), p < 0.001]. Therefore, bacterial standing crops in hot spring waters appear to be determined by water temperature in general, and this forces TC and Legionella levels be correlated. In accordance with this relationship, HPC rather than TC reflect the levels of non-fecal contamination better. Therefore, employing HPC as the sole microbiological standard, or adding HPC into the current standard of hot spring water assessment, is suggested as a proactive measure to prevent health issues arising from contamination.
The present study is aimed at examining the effects of the physico-chemical environmental factors of water systems on water bloom at Homin and Gagok reservoirs in Pungcheon-Myeon, Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The mean water temperature and the contents of chlorophyll-a, total-nitrogen, total-phosphorus and phosphate-phosphorus were higher at the Gagok reservoir. On the other hand, the pH mean value was higher at the Homin reservoir. The mean value of microelements (Na, K, Mg, Fe, Si) was higher at the Gagok reservoir. The cyanobacteria which was considered to be the cause of water bloom at the two reservoirs was Microcystis aeruginosa. It started to grow in May and showed the highest standing crop in August. Between the increase of standing crop of M. aeruginosa and the water quality, correlation values of $Na^+$ (r=-0.910, p<0.05), $Fe^{2+}$ (r=-0.855, p<0.05) and $Si^{4+}$ (r=0.989, p<0.01) at the Homin reservoir increased amount of standing crop. Meanwhile, at the Gagok reservoir, the contents of $Na^+$ (r=-0.776, p<0.05), $Si^{4+}$ (r=0.899, p<0.05) were highly related to the increase of standing crop. Interestingly, Si, which is the limiting factor for diatoms, has a high correlation with standing crop of cyanobacteria. In conclusion, the water blooming is caused not by a simple factor but a synergistic effect due to complex actions including high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus ions and many other environmental factors.
