  • This study was conducted to induce changes in the correct oral hygiene management habits and attitudes of university students by grasping the relationship between oral hygiene status and of self-perception halitosis of university students, and to present basic data to improve oral health. The data survey was conducted on 322 university students under the age of 23 among the participants who visited the department of dental hygiene at K University in Daejeon for practice from September 23, 2019 to December 6, 2019. The degree of dental deposition was grade B, the patient hygiene performance index was 'normal' and the amount of tongue plaque was 'good' the highest, and the factors that were highly related to self-perception halitosis were the amount of tongue plaque and were dental deposits rating and grade. Also, oral hygiene status and self-perception halitosis were correlated with each other, and it was found that oral hygiene status had an important effect on self-perception halitosis. Therefore, it is necessary to actively develop interesting and practical oral health care programs and publicity plans so that the quality of life of oral health for university students can be improved.

  • Objectives: Improving public capability to obtain, understand, and use health information is important for decision-making and communication. This study attempts to measure adults' literacy of the information provided by a public health institution. Factors affecting different health literacy level are also investigated. The relation between public risk perception and health literacy is examined as well. Methods: A total of 800 korean adults were surveyed. To provide the participants health literacy questions, health messages of heavy metals released by KFDA as well as literacy questions developed by NIKL were used. A total of eight questions were developed to measure health literacy. The dimensions of risk perception proposed by Brewer et al.(2008) were modified to measure risk perception. Results: The average percentage of correct answer for all literacy questions was only 65.57%. Individuals at the older age, and with lower education/ income level were more likely to be low literate. In addition, health literacy was strongly associated with risk perception. Conclusions: Public literacy of health information is influenced by socio demographic factors. This study suggested a possibility that low health literacy may affect unrealistically high risk perception. Further studies with sophisticated methodologies to measure health literacy need to be developed.

  • This study attempted to analyze the consonant perception ability and errors and to verify compatibility items for hearing impaired children wearing hearing aids and cochlear implants using the Phoneme Perception Test for School-Aged children (PPT-S). As a result of the study, it was found that children with hearing impairments have more difficulty in perceiving final consonants than initial consonants. The hard type of PPT-S, in which the articulation method and articulation place of the target and foil words are similar, felt more difficult than the easy type. Among the initial consonants, the incorrect response rate for aspiration sound was higher. In the case of final consonants, the incorrect answer rate for 'ㄷ' and 'ㅁ' was relatively higher. There was no significant difference in the percentage of correct response rate according to the gender of the speaker. The above results can be usefully used as basic data for standardizing of PPT-S and evaluating the intervention effects before and after hearing rehabilitation with hearing impaired children.

  • The Muslim population is growing significantly in Asian countries. By conducting an experiment, this study examines the cultural differences between South Korean and Indonesian female, young adults, and their perception of hijabis who are represented in the media. The main goal of this study is to compare the perception towards hijabis in a homogenous country new to Muslims against a Muslim-majority country. Results showed that non-hijabis were deemed more physically attractive, empathetic, and enjoyable among Koreans when compared to Indonesians. Through this study, we provide a theoretical explanation using cultivation theory and (parasocial) contact hypothesisto clarify the differences between South Korea and Indonesia. Thisstudy provides a baseline of understanding to determine where both cultures are at in perceiving hijabis. Our results suggest that it will be compelling to correct media representation in order to reduce stereotypes and lead to a successful understanding of both cultures.

  • The purpose of this study is to observe how Korean learners perceive an English weak syllable in words containing WS syllable pattern. According to the automated discrimination task using E-Prime, the ratio of correct answer(%) and reaction time of the stimuli with same syllable patterns were respectively higher and faster than those with different syllable patterns. Specifically, in the stimuli with different syllable patterns, the frequency(familiarity) of stressed word succeeding weak syllable and whether the weak syllable had coda in it were two important factors in distinguishing between a word with and without weak syllable. Even though the high English proficiency Koreans had faster reaction time than the low English proficiency Koreans, all Korean learners had a difficulty in perceiving the weak syllable at the beginning of a word.

  • This study reveals the perceptual role of stop release burst to Koreans' recognition of POA(place of articulation) and voicing in the English word-final stops. 10 Korean subjects participated in a perception experiment wherein the stimuli are prepared on the basis of the amount of acoustic information, which includes the release burst. The result shows that i) release burst plays an important role in the recognition of POA in the order of velar, alveolar, and bilabial stops, and ii) the release burst more enhances the correct recognition of voiceless stops than that of voiced stops. This result leads us to conclude that the role of stop release burst differs with respect to the POA and voicing of the stops, and it is possibly related to the different intensity of release in voicing and in each POA.

  • To investigate the relationship between voice and the image created by the voice, a perception experiment was undertaken in which voices of 8 males and 8 females reading a fairy tale were recorded and presented to 100 subjects along with the speakers' pictures. Two kinds of pictures were taken: one, a whole-body picture, and the other, a face-only close-up picture. Subjects were asked to match each voice with its owner. The results showed that out of 8, more than 4 were matched correctly. And the correct rate was higher when the voices were matched against the whole-body pictures than against the face-only pictures. In addition, it was noted that far more people picked a single voice as the most 'favorite' one than they picked one picture as the most 'favorite' image.

Methods: The participants were 382 female high school students from one academic and one vocational school. Data was collected from October to November, 2008 using self report questionnaire. Results: Knowledge on contraception was 5.52 in maximum 14 point scale. Major information source for sexual matters was peers such as friends or sisters. Perception on sexual behavior was different according to major information source. Fifty five percents of students thought that kiss can be permitted, and regarded sexual behavior as natural development. 3.4% of participants had experience of sexual intercourse. Conclusion: It is indicated that perception on sexual behavior can be shaped according to correct information and positive attitude on natural sexual development by health profession. Also, education on contraception would be included in sex education to reduce teenage pregnancy.

The purpose of this study was to improve menu's quality which is related to the food consumption frequency. Taste health and cost perceptions were chosen as the main factors of foods selection from the former related researches. There were differences in foods perception and consumption patterns according to gender. For both of female and male consumers, taste perceptions were highly correlated with consumption of most of foods. Finally, some recommendations which should be considered to correct or improve the quality of menu.

  • This study examined the dieting behaviors and diet-influencing factors among college students in the Youngnam region. The data were collected by a self-administered questionnaires during May, 2007. One hundred-ninety samples were ultimately analyzed by SPSS Windows. The results were as follows. First, when comparing calculated BMI with perception of individual body image, many respondents regarded themselves as overweight although they were within normal BMI. Second, over four-fifths of the respondents indicated they were concerned with diet, and many respondents answered that they needed education and information on dieting. In terms of diet knowledge, the mean for correct answers was 77.9%. Mass media were very important sources for acquiring diet information, and the most popular dieting method was fasting therapy. The results of regression analyses to determine the factors affecting several dieting practices showed that grade, monthly allowances, diet awareness, diet knowledge, perception of individual body image, and BMI were significant.
