The selective catalytic reduction(SCR) system used to reduce NOx in diesel engines requires an NO/$NO_2$ ratio of about 1 in exhaust emissions to realize the fast SCR mode at temperatures lower than $300^{\circ}C$. This study investigated the characteristics of a plasma system as a pre-active apparatus for the fast SCR reaction mode of an SCR system. Plasma was generated by the pulse corona discharge(PCD) method with a four-channel wire-cylinder reactor. This study showed that plasma was easily generated in the exhaust gas by the PCD system, and the peak voltage of the normal state condition for plasma generation was generally 12 kV. The PCD system easily converted NO into $NO_2$ at lower temperatures and the NO/$NO_2$ conversion ratio increased with the discharge current for plasma generation. But the PCD system could not convert NO into $NO_2$ at higher engine speeds and higher engine loads due to the lack of oxygen in exhaust gas. The PCD system also activated the diesel oxidation catalysts(DOC) system to reduce CO emissions.
Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a microbial storage polymer with biodegradable properties. In order to improve the cell compatibility of PHBV surfaces, the physicochemical treatments have been demonstrated. In this study, physical method was corona discharge treatment and chemical method was chloric acid mixture solution treatment. The physicochemically treated PHBV film surfaces were characterized by the measurement of water contact angle, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The water contact angle of the physicochemically treated PHBV surfaces decreased from 75 to 30~40 degree, increased hydrophilicity. due to the introduction of oxygen-based functional group onto the PHBV backbone chain. The mouse NIH/3T3 fibroblasts cultured onto the physicochemically treated PHBV film surfaces with different wettability. The effect of the PHBV surface with different wettability was determined by SEM as counts of cell number and [$^3$H]thymidine incorporation as measures of cell proliferation. As the surface wettability increased, the number of the cell adhered and proliferated on the surface was increased. The result seems closely related with the serum protein adsorption on the physicochemically treated PHBV surface. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the surface wettabilily of biodegradable polymer as the PHBV plays an important role for cell adhesion and proliferation behavior for biomedical application.
Besides respiratory infection, COVID-19 has many neurological symptoms not only loss of smell and taste but also fatigue and brain fog. But it is a challenge to treat the neurological symptoms especially of anosmia and ageusia. In order to search for the therapeutic methods, the geographical diversity and pathological mechanisms of the COVID-19 and two symptoms were investigated from the latest clinical studies. Because the environmental conditions of the monsoon climate zone of East Asia and the Mediterranean and Oceanic climate zone of Italy, Britain, United States and tropical Brazil are different, each of diverse etiology and internal milieu should be considered differently in the treatment. SARS-CoV-2 exhibits the dampness-like characteristics and the olfactory and gustatory disorders are particularly more common than other flu or cold. and it tends to show features of damaging the lung qi of olfaction and heart-spleen qi of gustation. The mechanisms of olfactory and gustatory loss are various according to precursory, inflammatory, non-inflammatory and sequelar forms, so the therapeutic method should be designed for each period and pathology. If the process of inflammation arises from nasal and respiratory, olfactory epithelium to the central nervous structure by way of blood brain barrier, the treatment should be corresponded with the stage and depth of pathogen place. And if the olfactory loss is asymptomatic or in the initial stage, it can be applied intranasal topical scent therapy to relieve temporary locking of qi movement, but maybe also used in parallel together with herbs of relieving dampness toxin latent in the lung parenchyma.
In this study performed to identify a degradation mechanism in macromolecular insulating material, the contact angel, surface potential decay, surface resistivity, and XPS analysis were compared after exposure of FRP laminate to plasma discharge. In the case of contact angle, the surface of specimen untreated showed weak hydrophobic property of 73。. However, the contact angle was decreased to 20。in the plasma-treated specimen. In the case of chemical changes arising form plasma treatment, carboxl radicals were generated mainly in the surface treated, which was rapidly changed to the hydrophilic one. In the corona potential decay study to determine the electrical changes of the surface, positive charges were rapidly decreased when compared with negative charges, leading to negative property in the surface of specimen not treated. However, in the case of the hydrophilic surface, lots of carboxl radicals acting as positive polarity were generated, resulting in positive surface. Owing to such positive surface, charges of negative polarity applied were rapidly decreased.
Nd:YAG($\lambda$=266 nm, pulse) laser beam was irradiated on the PDMS surface to improve its chemical reaction, wettability, adhesive property. The various surface modification methods of PDMS were already studied using oxygen plasma, ozone and corona discharge. The surface modification using laser has the advantage of the simple experiment that only directly irradiated laser beam on the PDMS surface in the air. After the laser treatment, the PDMS surface was investigated using a contact angle measuring instrument. The contact angle was decreased with a increase of the surface oxygen content. In conclusion, the wettability of PDMS surface was improved by the laser treatment without changing of its bulk characteristics.
In this paper, we present surface treatments for achieving bonds between PMMA and PDMS substrates. Silane primer is used for the formation of hydroxyl group on PMMA surfaces. The formed hydroxyl groups enhance the bonding strength of PDMS-PMMA substrates without channel clogging and structure deformation. The bonding strength on the different surface treatments (include oxygen plasma, 3-APTES, and corona discharge) is evaluated to find optimal bonding condition. The maximum bonding strength at the optimal surface treatment is over 300 kPa. The surface treatment using silane primer can be used to the bonding process of Micro-TAS and Lab-on-a-Chip.
In this experiment, we studied about concentration characteristics of $NO_x$ and generation of ozone in the reactor of corona discharge type by using mixed gas of $NO/N_2$ and $N_2/O_2$. In the case of the initial NO concentration increased, decrease rate of NO concentration was weakened and discharge input power of minimum NO concentration became high. When NO concentration was high, NO decomposition limit was appeared. And NO reduction rate was decreased, when initial NO concentration and discharge input power increased. When discharge input power was 5W, we could know the most proper energy value for treatment of NO. When the concentration of initial NO increased, generation of ozone decreased and in the case of same concentration of NO, according to discharge input power increase, generation of ozone increased.
In this study, composite materials were put to dry interfacial treatment by use of plasma technology It has been presented that the optimum parameters for the best wettability of the samples at the time of generation of plasma were oxygen atmosphere, 0.1 Torr of system pressure, 100 W of discharge power, and 3 minutes of discharge time. The decrease in surface potential of charged samples by corona discharge indicates that the amount of accumulated electrical charges reduces and the charges that have been injected lessen rapidly when the duration of UV irradiation increases. The surface resistivity and the tensile strength of plasma treated samples, a longer UV irradiation time resulted in decreased insulation.
Surface states of silicone polymer treated by plasma were investigated by the analysis by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and surface voltage decay after corona charging. Plasma treatment causes the silica -like oxidative layer, which was confirmed with XPS, and lowers surface resistivity with increasing the plasma treatment time. Using the decay time constant of surface voltage, the calculated surface resistivity was compared with the value directly measured by voltage-current method using three electrodes system. A good agreement between two methods was obtained. In addition, we estimated the thermal activation energy for surface conduction, Based on our results, we could understand the relationship between surface chemical states and surface electrical properties.
The effects of accelerated Ultraviolet (UV) radiation on High temperature vulcanized (HTV), Room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber and two types of ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) used for composite insulator were inverstigated by hydrophobicity class (HC), surface voltage decay after corona charging, SEM-EDS, FTIR and XPS. The contact angle in two kinds of silicone rubber was scarcely change, but EPDM occurred to the loss of hydrophobicity followed by surface cracking and chalking. The surface voltage decay on UV-treated silicone rubber and EPDM showed a different decay trend with UV treatment. EDS and XPS analysis indicated that the oxygen content increased with UV treatment time in all samples. For silicone rubber, the oxidized groups of inorganic silica-like structure increased with UV treatment time. The oxidized carbon of C=0, O=C-O in EPDM increased. These oxidized surface for each material had different electrostatic characteristics, so deposited charges were expected to have different impacts on their surface hydrophobicity. The degradation mechanism based on our results was discussed.
