  • A 2D barcode region localization system for the automatic inspection of a long distance logistics objects has been developed. For the successful 2D barcode localization, variance and frequency of the pixel distribution within average 2D barcodes is modeled and the average model of 2D barcode is combined with the corner features detection to localize the final 2D barcode candidates. An automatic 2D barcode localization software was developed with the multiple features mixture method and we tested our system on real camera images of several popular 2D barcode symbologies.

  • In this paper, the aerodynamic analysis of a vertical axis wind turbine was carried out by CFD approach to optimize the turbine performance. To perform numerical simulation, SST-Transition turbulence model was used, which demonstrated more precise results compared to non-transition models. A parametric study was conducted to optimize the VAWT performance based on the selected model. The investigation of pitch angle changes showed that the highest power produced by the turbine occurs at $2^{\circ}$ angle. Considering the effect of the rotor's arm junction to the airfoil showed that by increasing the distance of the junction from the edge of the airfoil from 25 cm to 40 cm, the power of the turbine increases by 60%. However, further increase in this distance results in power decrease. Based on the proposed numerical model, a case study was conducted to consider the installation of four VAWTs in the southwest corner of the medical science building at TMU campus with a height of 42m. The results of the simulation showed that 8.27 MWh energy is obtainable annually.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel method for enhancing the detection speed and rate by reducing the computation in Hough Circle Transform on real-time iris detection of smartphone camera image. First of all, we find a face and eyes from input image to detect iris and normalize the iris region into fixed size to prevent variation of size for iris region according to distance from camera lens. Moreover, we carry out histogram equalization to get regular image in bright and dark illumination from smartphone and calculate minimal iris range that contains iris with the distance between corner of the left eye and corner of the right eye on the image. Subsequently, we can minimize the computation of iris detection by applying Hough Circle Transform on the range including the iris only. The experiment is carried out in two case with bright and dark illumination. Our proposed method represents that detection speed is 40% faster and detection rate is 14% better than existing methods.

  • This paper has presented a few problems when the 2D video superimposed the overlay text was converted to the 3D stereoscopic video. To resolve the problems, it proposes the scenario which the original video is divided into two parts, one is the video only with overlay text graphic region and the other is the video with holes, and then processed respectively. And this paper focuses on research only to detect and extract the overlay text graphic region, which is a first step among the processes in the proposed scenario. To decide whether the overlay text is included or not within a frame, it is used the corner density map based on the Harris corner detector. Following that, the overlay text region is extracted using the hybrid method of color and motion information of the overlay text region. The experiment shows the results of the overlay text region detection and extraction process in a few genre video sequence.

  • In this study fire control characteristics for inflammable materials of water curtain system are experimentally analyzed. Heat release rate for pinewood and gasoline was calculated using Room Corner Tester (RCT) and fire test apparatus for water curtain system is manufactured. Nozzles (180 degree of injection angle, 8.2 mm of orifice diameter) are installed at the nearby ceiling of place at 5 m distance from fire originate and temperature profile as well as transmission are obtained from the fire experiment of pinewood and gasoline in the water curtain system. Based on the results, parameters of engineering importance for fire control characteristics of water curtain system such as generation of high temperature smoke and thermal phenomena of fluid flow by injection nozzle are identified.

  • In this paper, an extremely low voltage operated micro corner cube retroreflector (CCR) was fabricated for free-space optical communication applications by using bulk silicon micromachining technologies. The CCR was comprised of an orthogonal vertical mirror and a horizontal actuated mirror. For low voltage operation, the horizontal actuated mirror was designed with two PZT cantilever actuators, torsional bars, hinges, and a mirror plate with a size of $400{\mu}m{\times}400{\mu}m$. In particular, the torsional bars and hinges were carefully simulated and designed to secure the flatness of the mirror plate by using a finite element method (FEM) simulator. The measured tilting angle was approximately $2^{\circ}$ at the applied voltage of 5 V. An orthogonal vertical mirror with an extremely smooth surface texture was fabricated using KOH wet etching and a double-SOI (silicon-on-insulator) wafer with a (110) silicon wafer. The fabricated orthogonal vertical mirror was comprised of four pairs of two mutually orthogonal flat mirrors with $400{\mu}m4 (length) $\times400{\mu}m$ (height) $\times30{\mu}m$ (thickness). The cross angles and surface roughness of the orthogonal vertical mirror were orthogonal, almost $90^{\circ}$ and 3.523 nm rms, respectively. The proposed CCR was completed by combining the orthogonal vertical and horizontal actuated mirrors. Data transmission and modulation at a frequency of 10 Hz was successfully demonstrated using the fabricated CCR at a distance of approximately 50 cm.

  • STSAT-2 has an on-board satellite retroreflector array for precise orbit determination. Satellite retroreflector array reflects photon emitted from laser and uses to determine precisely the distance from ground station to satellite by the round-trip travel time of photon. The retroreflector array of protoflight model has been developed and verified through environmental tests. This paper describes the protoflight model of retroreflector array and reports environmental test results. The environmental tests of protoflight model retroreflector array were performed successfully without damage of corner cube prism occurred in engineering model development.

  • An experimental study on the convective heat transfer characteristics was performed for a two-dimensional wall attaching offset jet(WAOJ). Thermochromic liquid crystal was used to measure the plate wall temperature. The Nusselt number was measured for Reynolds numbers from 6, 500 to 39, 000, and the offset ratios from 0.5 to 15. The maximum Nusselt number point coincides with the time-averaged reattachment point and Nusselt number decreases monotonically after the jet reattaches on the wall. In the recirculation region Nusselt number minimize near the upstream corner and then increases as X/D decreases to vanishes. This suggests the existence of secondary vortices, causing an additional mixing of the flow in the corner. The correlations between the local Nusselt number and Reynolds number, Re, offset ratio, H/D, and streamwise distance, X/D are presented.

  • In this paper, a system that can classify the objects in the image according to their sizes using the reference points is proposed. The object is studied with samples. The proposed system recognizes and classifies objects by the size in images acquired using a mobile phone camera. Conventional object recognition systems classify objects using only object size. As the size of the object varies depending on the distance, such systems have the disadvantage that an error may occurs if the image is not acquired with a certain distance. In order to overcome the limitation of the conventional object recognition system, the object recognition system proposed in this paper can classify the object regardless of the distance with comparing the size of the reference point by placing it at the upper left corner of the image.

  • A method for acquiring an environmental map by integrating distance data obtained by sonars of a moving robot with web interface is proposed. Sonar data contains outliers in some cases such as ultrasonic beam is projected onto a corner of an object. Therefore, the influence of the outliers should be reduced by detecting outliers. In our method, the outliers are detected by two ways: (i) a method considering geometrical .elation among the observed surface and the projected ultrasonic beau, and (ii) a method considering consistency with data obtained by other sonars. By measurement by the sonar, the distance from the sonar to the obstacle is obtained. Assuming the two dimensional space we can know that the inside of the sector, whose renter coincide with the sonar and whose radius is equal to the obtained distance, is the free area, and a part of the arc of this sector is the obstacle area. The generation of the environmental map is done by integrating the free area and the obstacle area obtained by each measurement by the sonars. Before the integration, the outliers detection is done by two ways mentioned above. Experimental results show that obtained maps obtained by our methods with outliers defection are much better than those by a method without outliers detection.
