This experiment was carried out to know adaptability, forage production and quality of corn hybrid for silage at three regions during 2007 to 2008. Among agronomic characteristics, 'CAP444NG' hybrid was somewhat strong for good stay green and higher stem height as 294cm. The fresh and dry matter yield of 'CAP444NG' hybrid were the highest 61,111 kg/ha and 20,635 kg/ha, respectively. The crude protein of 'CAP444NG' hybrid was somewhat higher than other hybrids as 7.9%. The result of this study indicated that 'CAP444NG' hybrid could be recommended as having good characters according to forage production and stay green and for silage in Korea.

The present study was conducted to evaluate the productivity of $Sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ (SX17) hybrid and BMR (brown mid rib) $Sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrid and silage quality of these forages with corn grain supplementation. The effect of corn grain supplementation on the quality of silages was also investigated. No remarkable differences at growth characteristics and productivities in two hybrids were found. Sugar content, however, in stem of BMR hybrid showed significantly great (p<0.05) and the difference between two hybrids was about $2B^{\circ}$. Ratio of lactic acid in total organic acid in BMR hybrid (82.8%) was significantly greater than the control (SX17 hybrid) (78.5%) (p<0.05). Ratio of butyric acid in total organic acid in SX17 hybrid (18.5%) was significantly greater than BMR hybrid (9.8%) (p<0.05). According to the result of organic acid ratio, it could be assumed that the use of BMR hybrid can improve silage quality. NDF and ADF contents in both SX17 and BMR hybrids were significantly declined with increased corn grain supplementation (p<0.05). Different TDN values in SX17 (56.2) and BMR (57.1) hybrids were detected. However, TDN values of both SX17 and BMR hybrid silages were significantly elevated by increasing the proportion of ground corn (p<0.05).

This study examined the effects of a hydrothermal pretreatment (HP) on the nutritional values and in vitro fermentation characteristics of tall fescue and corn silage. This study was conducted through a factorial design of 2 (control or HP) × 2 (hay; tall fescue or silage; corn). For the HP, forage was placed into a glass bottle with 20% w/v of water, and the glass bottle was sealed and heated to reach a temperature of 121℃ (0.12 MPa). The solid residue and liquid were collected and oven-dried at 65℃ for three days. The dried materials were tested for in vitro fermentation at 39℃ for 24 and 48 h. The content of ADF increased significantly regardless of the forage type. After in vitro incubation for 24 h, the total VFA content was significantly lower after HP, regardless of the forage type (p ≤ 0.05), and the propionate concentration was increased in corn silage with HP (p ≤ 0.05). After 48 hours of in vitro incubation, the propionate content increased significantly (p ≤ 0.03) in corn silage with HP (p ≤ 0.05), but the butyrate content decreased significantly (p ≤ 0.05). There was no change in the in vitro dry matter and neutral detergent fiber digestibility by HP regardless of the forage type. Therefore, the use of hydrothermally pretreated corn silage could be advantageous for the supply of energy for ruminants.
This study was carried out to investigatigate feed cost of com-manure silage and growth performance of Korean native goats which was fed com-manure silage. The average weight about 11.6 kg of twenty one Korean native male goats (4 months used to determine the effect of the feeding trial. The goats were individually reared in metabolism cages and fed diet daily of 2% of the body weight on the dry matter basis. The treatments were divided into whole crop com silage(CS silage), whole crop com ensiled with cage layer manure (CLM; Com-manure silage or MS silage) and whole crop com silage supplemented with urea at feeding time (US silage). The content of crude protein, lactic acid and the ratio of ammonia nitrogen to total nitrogen ($NH_3-N/Total$ N) in MS silage were increased from 7.7 to 14.9%, 5.7 to 7.5% and 8.2 to 16.6%, and the differences were significantly (p < 0.05) different in all observations. Total body weight gain of those goats for 90 days was 6.0 kg (66.7 g/day; MS silage 4.3 kg (47.8 g/day; US silage) and 3.9 kg (43.4 g/day; CS silage), and feed conversion of MS silage (5.98) for 90 days was increased by far the best in the other groups and decreased about 30% in proportion to CS silage. Feed cost per 1 kg MS silage (1,606 won) was the lowest (p < 0.05) in the body weight gain and cut down expenses than fed CS silage by 37% of feed cost.

This study was carried out to examine the effects of animal manure on efficiency of the nitrogen utilization of silage corn (Zea mays L.) and soil fertility. The experiment was conducted on the field plot at Gongiam, Kwangju, Kyunggi-Do for 3 years, from 1996 to 1998, and arranged in split-plot design with three replications. The main plots were two kinds of composts such as swine manure fermented with sawdust (SMFWS) and swine manure fermented without sawdust (SMF). Subplots were the nitrogen fertilization rate (0, 100, 200, 300 and 400kgNhalyear). The nitrogen (N) yield increased as the nitrogen fertilization rate increased up to a rate of 300 kg Nha, but decreased at rate of 400 kg Nlha. Nitrogen yield in SMF treatments was higher than that of SMFWS treatments. But there were no significant differences between SMFWS and SMF treatments. Organic matter (OM) content of the soils in SMFWS was higher than that of SMF, &d was not significantly different between SMFWS and SMF treatments. OM content increased with increasing the nitrogen fertilization rate. Total nitrogen (TN) content of the soils increased as the nitrogen fertilization rate increased. No difference of TN content was found between SMFWS and SMF treatments. (Key words : Swine manure, Compost, Corn, Sawdust, Nutritive value)

This study was conducted to evaluate growth characteristics, yield and feed value of newly bred domestic silage corn hybrids compared to foreign imported corn hybrid. Days to silking were $78{\sim}86$ days and longer than that of P3394 (Control). Kwangpyeongok, Cheonganok, and Cheongsaok were resistant to lodging. Such trait of stay-green of Kwanganok, Kwangpyeongok, Cheonganok, Cheongsaok, and Suwon159 was not different from that of P3394. Duruok, Kwangpyeongok, and Suwon159 were more resistant to Bipolaris maydis (southern corn leaf blight) than P3394. All of the silage corn hybrids were resistant to Exserohilum turcicum (northern corn leaf blight) and Smut. Ear ratios to total dry matter (%) of Cheonganok was similar to P3394. Ear lengths of domestic hybrids were similar or longer than that of P3394. Dry matter yield of domestic hybrids except Suwon19 and Jangdaok were similar to that of P3394. Total digestible nutrient (TDN) yields, Duruok, Kwangpyeongok, Cheonganok, and Cheongsaok were similar to P3394, but Kwanganok, Suwon19, Jangdaok and Suwon159 were lower than P3394. Acid detergent fiber(ADF), Suwon19 was lowest among all hybrids, and all hybrids except Suwon19 had values ranging from 44.7 to 49.0%, similarly with P3394. Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) values of the hybrids were similar to that of P3394, and ranged from 68.1 to 72.8%, except for Duruok which was lowest. Relative feed values (RFV) of Duruok, Kwangpyeongok, Cheonganok, Jangdaok, and Suwon159 had values ranging from 71.0 to 75.7 and were not significantly different from P3394. ADF was significantly negatively correlated with number of days to silking, number of days to maturity, and fresh matter yield, but was significantly positively correlated with resistance to corn borer. RFV showed a significantly positive correlations with no. of days to maturity and fresh matter yield, but significantly negative correlation with resistance to European corn borer. Therefore, indices for evaluation of feed value as well as production were important to select corn hybrids for silage. It is concluded that domestic hybrids tested in this study have high feed value as well as high production similar to those of imported corn hybrid.

This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of soil condition that previous crop cultivated after [TO: Soil of corn cultivated, T1 : Soil of rye monoculture cultivated(l50kg/ha), T2 : Soil of mixedculture cultivated(Rye : Red clover = 120 : 3koa). T3 : Soil of mixed-culture cultivated(Rye : Red clover = 90 : 6kg/ ha), T4 : Soil of mixedculture cultivated(Rye : Red clover = 60 : 9kg/ha), T5 : Soil of mixedculture cultivated (Rye: Red clover = 30 : 12kg/ha), T6 : Soil of red clover monoculture cultivated(l5kgha)) on the growth characteristics and nutrient yield of silage corn. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The plant length of silage corn was high in order of T6>T5>T4 treatment. In the leaf length, T5 and T6 treatment showed short compared to the other treatments, but they were wider than the other treatments in leaf width. In the number of leaf, T6 treatment was the highest as 14 leaves per plant, while T1 treatment showed lower than the other treatments as 12.6 leaves per plant. 2. In the stem hardness, ear length, ear width and ear full degree, soil treatment of red clover mono-culture cultivation(T6) showed higher than the other treatment as 5.1 1kg/$cm^2$, 20.8~~1, 7.7cm and 97%. respectively (P<0.01, 0.05). Ihe leaf of summer depression did not many occurrence, but T6 treatment was lower than the other treatment as 0.8 leaf per plant. 3. ADF and NDF composition were not affected by soil condition. Crude protein composition of T6 treatment was the highest as 7.8%. while TI treatment was the lowest as 6.9%. Fresh weight yield(59,083kg/ha), dry matter yield(21,743kg/ha), crude protein yield(l,369kg/ha) and TDN yield(15,800kg/ha) at T6 treatment were much more increased by 41.9, 47.5, 57.4 and 49% than TI treatment(39,410, 14,259, 827 and 10,056kg/ha).

This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of the feeding value for the wild legumes silage-making with additives. The chopped Kudzu (Puerarie thunbergii Bentham) of wild legumes was ensiled by the conventional method in the small experimental silo of 2 liters. The additives used in the present experiments were water (8%),water (8%) plus corn starch (3%) and water (8%) plus glucose (3%). These additives as well as that of control without additive were set up and these silage were compared with the conventional corn silage. The fermentative qualities and the characteristic of fiber (neutral detergent fiber, NDF; acid detergent fiber, ADF; acid detergent lignin, ADL) of silage produced was determined by chemical analysis, and dry matter digestibility (DMD) was evaluated by pepsin-cellulase technique. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1 The weight of Kudzu silage was lost under the 10% for all the treatments. 2 In degree of pH for the Kudzu silages with glucose, starch, control and water treatments were high 3.80,4.04,4.57 and 5.34, respectively.

Objective: This study aimed to determine the effects of different roughages in total mixed ration (TMR) inoculated with or without coculture of Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus) and Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) on in vitro rumen fermentation and microbial population. Methods: Three TMRs formulations composed of different forages were used and each TMR was grouped into two treatments: non-fermented TMR and fermented TMR (F-TMR) (inoculated with coculture of L. acidophilus and B. subtilis). After fermentation, the fermentation, chemical and microbial profile of the TMRs were determined. The treatments were used for in vitro rumen fermentation to determine total gas production, pH, ammonianitrogen (NH3-N), and volatile fatty acids (VFA). Microbial populations were determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). All data were analyzed as a 3×2 factorial arrangement design using the MIXED procedure of Statistical Analysis Systems. Results: Changes in the fermentation (pH, lactate, acetate, propionate, and NH3-N) and chemical composition (moisture, crude protein, crude fiber, and ash) were observed. For in vitro rumen fermentation, lower rumen pH, higher acetate, propionate, and total VFA content were observed in the F-TMR group after 24 h incubation (p<0.05). F-TMR group had higher acetate concentration compared with the non-fermented group. Total VFA was highest (p<0.05) in F-TMR containing combined forage of domestic and imported source (F-CF) and F-TMR containing Italian ryegrass silage and corn silage (F-IRS-CS) than that of TMR diet containing oat, timothy, and alfalfa hay. The microbial population was not affected by the different TMR diets. Conclusion: The use of Italian ryegrass silage and corn silage, as well as the inoculation of coculture of L. acidophilus and B. subtilis, in the TMR caused changes in the pH, lactate and acetate concentrations, and chemical composition of experimental diets. In addition, F-TMR composed with Italian ryegrass silage and corn silage altered ruminal pH and VFA concentrations during in vitro rumen fermentation experiment.

A field experiment was carried out to determine the optimum application level of dicamba herbicide for efficient control of Calystegia japonica in silage corn field. Six treatments of application levels (0 ; control, $0.75{\ell},\;1.0{\ell},\;1.25{\ell},\;1.5{\ell},\;and\;2.0{\ell}/ha$) were arranged at National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon in 1995. The hybrid silage corn was DK 729, and dicamba herbicide was applied at 5~6 leaf stage of corn. The growth of corn was poor in control plot, and the days for tasseling and silking were delayed 1~4 days when compared with the plots of herbicide application. The control efficiency of Calystegia japonica was excellent as 74.3~94.6% in the plots of dicamba application. A slight injury of herbicide was observed at early stage of corn when applied at $1.25{\ell}$ and $1.5{\ell}$ of dicamba per ha, and severe injury was found at $2.0{\ell}$ of dicamba. Forage dry matter(DM) yield, and length of ear in the plots of dicamba treatments were significantly higher than those of control. The DM yield of control(4,866kg/ha) was only about 30% of dicamba treatment plot (14,960~16,340kg/ha). However, there was no yield difference among dicamba application level. The percentage of ear to total DM yield was ranged from 33.6 to 39.4%. With application of herbicide, the contents of crude protein and nitrogen free extract were increased, and that of crude fiber was decreased in stover. However, nutritive value of corn ear was very similar among all treatments, regardless of herbicide treatment. From the above results, it is recommended that optimum application level of dicamba herbicide was $0.75{\sim}1.0{\ell}/ha$ for efficient control of Calystegia japonica and for silage corn production without herbicide injury.
