  • Polystyrene-poly(etheramic acid) core-shell particles were prepared by dispersion polymerization of styrene using poly(etheramic acid) obtained by the reaction of 2,2'-bis[4-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) phenyl]propane dianhydride and 3,5-diamniobenzoic acid as a stabilizer. 4-Vinylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride was used as a comonomer to increase the binding efficiency of poly(etheramic acid). When the ethanol-water mixture (7 : 3) was used as a reaction medium, particles were stabilized well and the size distribution of particles was fairly narrow. The particle size increased with the amount of styrene. The particles polymerized in the dimethylformamide-water mixture had a broad size range. Polystyrene-poly(etheramic acid) core-shell particles were transformed to polystyrene-polyetherimide core-shell particles by the chemical imidization of shells.

  • The statistical two-order and two-scale method is developed for predicting the mechanics parameters, such as stiffness and strength of core-shell particle-filled polymer composites. The representation and simulation on meso-configuration of random particle-filled polymers are stated. And the major statistical two-order and two-scale analysis formulation is briefly given. The two-order and two-scale expressions for the strains and stresses of conventionally strength experimental components, including the tensional or compressive column, the twist bar and the bending beam, are developed by means of their classical solutions with orthogonal-anisotropic coefficients. Then a new effective mesh generation algorithm is presented. The mechanics parameters of core-shell particle-filled polymer composites, including the expected stiffness parameters, minimum stiffness parameters, and the expected elasticity limit strength and the minimum elasticity limit strength, are defined by means of the stiffness coefficients and elasticity strength criterions for core, shell and matrix. Finally, the numerical results for predicting both stiffness and elasticity limit strength parameters are compared with the experimental data.

  • We report nanostructure electrodes with $TiO_2$ as a core and carbon as a shell ($TiO_2$@C) for oxygen reduction in alkaline solution. The structure of core-shell electrodes is characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction method, and X-ray photoelectron microscopy. The electrochemical properties of the $TiO_2$@C electrodes are characterized using a potentiostat and compared with those of carbon supported Pt catalyst. In particular, the core-shell electrode with dominant pyridinic-N component exhibits an imporved electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline solution.

  • Monodispersed microparticles with a poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) core and a poly(ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate) (PE2CA) shell were prepared by Shirasu porous glass (SPG) membrane emulsification to reduce the initial burst release of doxorubicin (DOX). Solution mixtures with different weight ratios of PLGA polymer and E2CA monomer were permeated under pressure through an SPG membrane with $1.9\;{\mu}m$ pore size into a continuous water phase with sodium lauryl sulfate as a surfactant. Core-shell structured microparticles were formed by the mechanism of anionic interfacial polymerization of E2CA and precipitation of both polymers. The average diameter of the resulting microparticles with various PLGA:E2CA ratios ranged from 1.42 to $2.73\;{\mu}m$. The morphology and core-shell structure of the microparticles were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The DOX release profiles revealed that the microparticles with an equivalent PLGA:E2CA weight ratio of 1:1 exhibited the optimal condition to reduce the initial burst of DOX. The initial release rate of DOX was dependent on the PLGA:E2CA ratio, and was minimized at a 1:1 ratio.

  • Monodispersed Ag/$TiO_2$ core/shell nanoparticles were synthesized in solution via colloid-seeded deposition process using Ag nanoparticles as colloid seeds and $Ti(SO_4)_2$ as Ti-source respectively. Silver nitrate was reduced to Ag nanoparticles with $N_2H_4{\cdot}H_2O$ in the presence of CTAB as stabilizing agent. The titania sols hydrolyzed by the $Ti(SO_4)_2$ solution deposited on the surface of Ag nanoparticles to form the Ag/$TiO_2$ core/shell nanoparticles. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) showed low amount of Ag ion leaching from the Ag/$TiO_2$ core/shell nanoparticles. The Ag/$TiO_2$ core/shell nanoparticles indicated excellent antibacterial effects against Escherichia coli and maintained long-term antibacterial property.

  • To improve the optical and electrical properties of commercialized GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs), many methods are suggested. In recent years, great efforts have been made to improve the internal quantum efficiency and light extraction efficiency (LEE) and promising approaches are suggested using a patterned sapphire substrate (PSS), V-pit embedded LED structures, and silica nanostructures. In this study, we report on the enhancement of photoluminescence (PL) intensity in GaN-based LED structures by using the combination of SiO2 (silica) nanospheres and polystyrene/SiO2 core-shell nanospheres. The SiO2 nanospheres-coated LED structure shows the slightly increased PL intensity. Moreover the polystyrene/SiO2 core-shell nanospheres-coated structure shows the more increase of PL intensity comparing to that of only SiO2 spheres-coated structure and the conventional structure without coating of nanospheres. The Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation results show corresponding result with experimentally observed results. The mechanism of enhancement of PL intensity using the coating of polystyrene/SiO2 core-shell nanospheres on LED surface can be explained by the improvement in extraction efficiency by both increasing the probability of light escape by reducing Fresnel reflection and by multiple scattering within the core-shell nanospheres.

  • In this paper, core-shell structure of nickel/gold (Ni/Au) conductive layer on poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) micro-ball was fabricated and its conduction property was investigated. Firstly, PMMA micro-ball was synthesized by using dispersion polymerization method. Size of the ball was $2.8{\mu}m$ within ${\pm}7%$ deviation, and appropriate elastic deformation of the PMMA micro-ball ranging from 31 to 39% was achieved under 3 kg pressure. Also, 200 nm thick Ni/Au conductive layer was fabricated on the PMMA micro-ball by uniformly depositing with electroless-plating. Adhesion of the conductive layer was optimized with help of surface pre-treatment, and the layer adhered without peeling-off despite of thermal expansion by collision with accelerated electrons. Composite paste containing core-shell structured particles well cured at low temperature of $130^{\circ}C$ while pressing the test chip onto the substrate to make electrical contact, and electrical resistance of the conductive layer showed stable behavior of about $6.0{\Omega}$. Thus, it was known that core-shell structured particle of the Ni/Au conductive layer on PMMA micro-ball was feasible to flexible electronics.

  • An Ni-Fe/YSZ core-shell structured anode for uniform microstructure and catalytic activity was synthesized. Flat tubular segmented-in-series solid oxide fuel cell-stacks were prepared by decalcomania method using synthesized anode powder. The Ni-Fe/YSZ core-shell anode exhibited better electrical conductivity than a commercially available Ni-YSZ cermet anode. Also power output increased by 1.3 times with a higher open circuit voltage. These results can be attributed to the uniformly distributed Ni particles in the YSZ framework. The impedance spectra of a Ni-Fe/YSZ core-shell anode showed comparable reduced ohmic resistance similar to those of the commercially available Ni-YSZ cermet anodes.

  • We report the synthesis and thermal annealing of Si-core/ZnO-shell nanorods using a two-step process comprising the metal-assisted electroless etching of Si and the sputter deposition of ZnO. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the cores of the annealed core-shell nanorods were single crystal diamond cubic-type Si, whereas the shells of the annealed core-shell nanorods were single crystal wurtzite-type ZnO. The PL spectra of Si nanorods consisted of a broad red emission band and a weaker blue emission band. The major emission band of Si nanorods was shifted from 700 nm (in the red region) to 440 nm (in the violet region) by ZnO coating. The violet emission of the core-shell nanorods was enhanced in intensity considerably by annealing in an oxidizing atmosphere. The origin of the PL enhancement by annealing is also discussed.

  • In this work, we synthesized alloy-core InZnP quantum dots, which are more efficient than single-core InP quantum dots, using a solution process method. The effect of synthesis conditions of alloy core on optical properties was investigated. We also investigated the conditions that make up the gradient shell to minimize defects caused by lattice mismatch between the InZnP core and ZnS is 7.7%. The stable synthesis temperature of the InZnP alloy core was 200℃. Quantum dots consisting of three layered ZnSe gradient shell and single layered ZnS exhibited the best optical property. The properties of quantum dots synthesized in 100 ml and in 2,000 ml flasks were almost equal.
