  • The purposes of this study is to examine the effects of cooperative teaming through student team-achievement division (STAD) model on high school students’ leaming achievements and scientific attitudes in the field of astronomy. It is another aim to compare effects of cooperative learning based on improvement scores with traditional teaching method done only by teachers in astronomy field. This study was conducted on two tenth grade classes in a boy’s high school in Incheon. Students had four classes a week in cooperative learning way for four weeks. During cooperative learning classes, formative evaluation was given to students every week oil Stars and Exploring the Solar System. The results show that these two approaches have great different effects on students’ astronomical knowledge and that students adopt more positive scientific attitude toward cooperative learning classes than traditional ones. In conclusion, the cooperative learning is more effective and positive than traditional one in learning astronomical knowledge and in students scientific attitude for science classes.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cooperative skill training on problem based learning for elementary school science class. Two experiment groups were involved, in which problem based learning model was used and control group, in which traditional instruction was employed. One of experiment groups was trained in cooperative skills before the instruction. The results demonstrated a significant main effect in the scores of achievement and a significant interaction effect between the instructional strategies and learning ability level. The performance of high-level students in the two experimental groups was higher than that of control group. However, the performance of medium and low-level students trained with cooperative skills training was higher than that of students without cooperative skills training. A significant main effect was also found in self-esteem, but there was no significant interaction between instructional strategies and learning ability. Therefore, this study suggests that cooperative skills training is of great importance for minimizing the free-rider effect and increasing collaborative interaction in cooperative learning.

  • This study intended to identify the relationship between cooperative learning competency and personality, and to evaluate how creativity mediate this relationship. Participants were 123 university students in Busan, the collected data was analyzed using Model 6 of SPSS PROCESS Macro. The results indicated as follows. First, cooperative learning competency, creative ability, creative disposition, and personality all showed a significant positive correlation. Second, it was found that cooperative learning competency had a significant effect on personality. Third, the mediating effect of creative ability wasn't found to be significant in the relationship between cooperative learning competency and personality. Fourth, the mediating effect of creative disposition was found to be significant in the relationship between cooperative learning competency and personality. Fifth, in the relationship between cooperative learning competency and personality, the sequential mediating effect of creative ability and creative disposition was confirmed.

  • This paper investigated the effects of cooperative learning and individual learning in computer science education. Most works and projects are accomplished in groups in most IT companies in Korea. Thus, cooperative learning is one of the most important aspects that must be learned in schools. This research studies how students think of individual and cooperative learning. It also researches and analyzes how different learning methods would affect the learning effects with surveys and experiments, which were conducted during two consecutive semesters with students in a department of a computer related major at a university in Seoul. This research compares and analyzes the results after dividing the students in two groups based on the different learning methods.

  • This study analyzed changes in sociality and democratic-citizenship among elementary school students in the information class and the science class at the Science Education Institute for the Gifted, who were divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group engaged in the Learning Together (LT) cooperative form of learning for which the remix function of Scratch, an educational programming language, was applied, while the control group was given general instructor-led lessons. Members in the experimental group were able to modify processes during projects through the usage of the remix function, thereby actively participating in the projects and eventually generating team-based results. The post-class t-tests showed a greater degree of improvements in sociality and democratic citizenship for the experimental group that was offered the remix-function-based cooperative learning than the control group. Statistically significant differences were present between two groups particularly in "cooperative spirit" sub-domain of sociality and the "community" and "responsibility" sub-domains of democratic citizenship.

  • This paper is to study whether cooperative learning applying group games becomes a teaching method that can increase interest and participation in class in calculus and the effect of the number of students. To increase interest and participation in class, the researcher conducted cooperative learning by applying smartphones and various game tools to group games. The consequences of the study confirmed that students' interest and participation in the class increased regardless of their mathematics basics. Therefore, it is expected that the calculus which is difficult for students to understand will be more easily approached by cooperative learning applying group games in the future.

  • As computer technology is in progress and many educational methods have been emerged, web-based cooperative learning and educational games have gained a lot of interests. Some cooperative learning systems and game-based educational systems have been suggested, but few cooperative learning systems use games. This paper builds a new web-based cooperative learning system using games that enables learners to actively participate and have high interests in learning. In our system, cooperation study is performed in each group and a group member competes with other group members using games. A crossword puzzle game is adopted because of ease to use and fit with cooperative learning scenarios. Our suggested system is implemented and used by two classes of high school students to evaluate this system. The experimental results show that our system effectively improve students' learning interests and increase their academic achievement.

  • This study investigated the effects of cooperative and individual computer-assisted instructions upon middle school students' science conceptions, achievement, perception of learning environment, and motivation. The cooperative, individual, and traditional learning groups were selected from a middle school, and taught about the motion of molecule for 5 class hours. Data analyses indicated that the students with cooperative computer-assisted instruction scored significantly higher than those with traditional instruction in the tests of conceptual understanding, perception of learning environment and motivation. Better understanding of the cooperative learning group was also found in a retention test of conceptions. In addition, there were significant interactions between the instruction and the level of prior achievement in the tests of retention of conceptions and motivation. Educational implications are discussed.

  • The purpose of the study was to identify the effects of LT cooperative learning and traditional competitive learning on academic achievement by the level of learning ability in industrial high school students. The results of the study were as follows; the score of posttest of the experimental low grade group was significantly higher than that of control low grade group (p<.05), and the score of posttest was significantly higher than that of pretest in the experimental low and middle grade group (p<.05). Based on these results, it was concluded that LT cooperative learning had positive effect on the enhancement of industrial high school student's academic achievement than the traditional lecture learning. Its effect on high grade students was negative, but its effect was significantly positive on both middle grade and low grade level students.

  • The purpose of this study is to enhance the achievement in mathematics by developing compensatory learning materials and applying those to learning. The conclusions of this study are as follows. 1. Solving the learning tasks by cooperative learning guided instruction to learning by students from teaching by teacher, and it made learning effective and students cooperative in personal-relation 2. Learning materials for compensating learning deficit made students motivated and interested in mathematics, and active in learning. 3. By applying the learning materials for compensating prerequisite learning deficit, students could grasp learning contents and learning tasks, and their achievement could be enhanced. On the basis of problems which appeared in the progress of this study, the suggestions are as follows. 1, The necessity of mathematics in agricultural high schools should be recognized by students and various learning materials should be developed. 2. In cooperative learning, the roles of team-chiefs have a great influence on learning mood and problem-solving processes, they, therefore, must be directed beforehand so that they play the roles of leaders.
