  • Liquefied hydrogen have advantage which reduces the volume by about 800 times or more compared to hydrogen gas, so it is possible to increase the storage density. However, liquefied hydrogen produced by cryogenic cooling of 20 K or less at normal pressure has a problem of maximizing the insulation effect that blocks heat introduced from the outside. Representative insulation technologies include vacuum insulation and multi-layer insulation materials and in general, heat blocking is attempted by combining insulation technologies. Therefore, in this study, the pressure of the internal vacuum layer was changed to 10-1, 10-2, 10-3 and 10-4 Torr to confirm the thermal insulation performance of the vacuum jacket valve for transporting liquefied hydrogen. As a result, it was confirmed that the insulation performance improved as the degree of vacuum increased.

  • Recently, condensation heat exchangers have been studied for applications to the passive cooling systems of nuclear plants. To design vertical-type condensation heat exchangers in secondary passive cooling systems, TSCON (Thermal Sizing of CONdenser), a thermal sizing program for a condensation heat exchanger, was developed at KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). In this study, the existing condensation heat transfer correlation of TSCON was evaluated using 1,157 collected experimental data points from the heat exchanger of a secondary passive cooling system for the case of pure steam condensation. The investigation showed that the Shah correlation, published in 2009, provided the most satisfactory results for the heat transfer coefficient with a mean absolute error of 34.8%. It is suggested that the Shah correlation is appropriate for designing a condensation heat exchanger in TSCON.

  • Kerosene(Jet A-1), one of the propellants for each stage's engine of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II(KSLV-II), functions as coolant at the same time as it flows inside the cooling jacket of the combustion chambers and is injected through the film cooling holes. A physical surrogate mixture model to reproduce the thermophysical characteristics of Jet A-1 has been selected and the thermodynamic/transport properties of the model fuel under high pressure including supercritical conditions have been estimated using SUPERTRAPP(NIST SRD4). Comparisons with the measured properties suggest that proposed database can be used to extract properties of Jet A-1 for conjugate heat transfer analysis of liquid propellant rocket engine thrust chambers. Predicted combustion/cooling performance of regeneratively cooled thrust chambers shall be validated through comparisons with upcoming firing test results.

  • The decay heat that is produced by nuclear reactor spent fuel must be cooled in a spent fuel storage pool. A wickless heat pipe or a vertical two-phase closed thermosyphon (TPCT) is used to remove this decay heat. The objective of this research is to investigate the thermal performance of a prototype model for a large-scale vertical TPCT as a passive cooling system for a nuclear research reactor spent fuel storage pool. An experimental investigation and numerical simulation using RELAP5/MOD 3.2 were used to investigate the TPCT thermal performance. The effects of the initial pressure, filling ratio, and heat load were analyzed. Demineralized water was used as the TPCT working fluid. The cooled water was circulated in the water jacket as a cooling system. The experimental results show that the best thermal performance was obtained at a thermal resistance of $0.22^{\circ}C/W$, the lowest initial pressure, a filling ratio of 60%, and a high evaporator heat load. The simulation model that was experimentally validated showed a pattern and trend line similar to those of the experiment and can be used to predict the heat transfer phenomena of TPCT with varying inputs.

  • The steady three-dimensional computational thermal flow analysis using standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model was carried out to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a cabin cooler for a commercial vehicle. The heat exchanging method of this cabin cooler is to use the cooling effect of a thermoelectric module. In view of the results so far achieved, the air system resistance of a cabin cooler is about 12.4 Pa as a static pressure, and then the operating point of a cross-flow fan considering in this study is formed in the comparatively low flowrate region. The air temperature difference obtained from the cold part of an thermoelectric module is about $26^{\circ}C$, and the cooling water temperature difference obtained from the hot part of an thermoelectric module is about $3.5^{\circ}C$.

  • A study of the fatigue life of copper alloy which was used in inner jacket of regenerative cooling chamber of liquid rocket engine has been performed. Generally used life prediction methods -original universal slopes method, modified universal slopes method, Mitchell's method, B$\"{a}$umel and Seeger's method, and Ong's method- have been used for predicting the fatigue data. It was found that the novel life prediction method which was modified from Ong's method was suggested since almost all data have not been predicted well with the widely used methods. The suggested modified Ong's method predicted well within 3X scatterbands.

  • This paper presents the thermal characteristics analysis of a high-speed HMC(horizontal machining center) with spindle speed of 30,000rpm and fried rate of 40m/min. The spindle speed is achieved by introducing angular contact ball bearings, oil-jet lubrication method, oil jacket cooling method, and so on. The spindle system is a motor-separated type composed of the main spindle and sub-spindle which are mechanically connected by the flexible coupling. The spindles are supported by two front and rear bearings, and the built-in motor is located between the front to and rear bearings of the sub-spindle. The thermal analysis model of HMC is constructed by the finite element method, and the thermal characteristics in the design stage are estimated based on temperature distribution and heat flow under the various testing conditions related to spindle speed and feed rate.
