The objective of present study is to analyze a hot steel-tube cooling system as a kind of concentric triple-passage heat exchanger, whose inner tube is moving with a constant speed. Velocities and temperatures of an antioxidant gas flowing between inner and outer tubes are calculated theoretically for both laminar and turbulent flow regimes and used to give Nusselt numbers and friction factors with respect to various radius ratios and velocity ratios. In addition, it is shown that heat transfer coefficients based on ratios of average heat fluxes from inner and outer tubes might result in great errors for the temperature distributions of the flows, since the local heat transfer coefficients are dependent on the local heat flux ratios.
In advanced nuclear reactors, the passive containment cooling has been suggested to enhance the safety. The passive cooling has two mechanisms, air natural convection and oater cooling with evaporation. To confirm the coolability of PCCS, many works have been performed experimentally and numerically. In this study, the water cooling test was performed to obtain the evaporative heat transfer coefficients in a scaled don segment type PCCS facility which have same configuration with AP600 prototype containment. Air-steam mixture temperature and velocity, relative humidity and well heat flux are measured. The local steam mass flow rates through the vertical plate part of the facility are calculated from the measured data to obtain evaporative heat transfer coefficients. The measured evaporative heat transfer coefficients are compared with an analytical model which use a mass transfer coefficients. From the comparison, the predicted coefficients show good agreement with experimental data however, some discrepancies exist when the effect of wave motion is not considered. Finally, a new correlation on evaporative heat transfer coefficients are developed using the experimental values.
District heating and cooling systems offer highly efficient energy utilization and maintenance by centralizing heat management. More pumping power, however, is required because the water has to travel long distance from heat source to the users. In the present study, a trace of drag reduction additives is added to the District Cooling system to achieve a significant drag reduction and save pumping power. Water-soluble polymers, surfactants, and environment-friendly degradable polymers are used as effective drag reducing additives. Time dependent percent drag reductions are compared for various additive solutions at 100 wppm concentration for different water velocity. Without as an anionic surfactant, copolymer was most effective in percent drag reduction. It is found that there exists an optimal condition when copolymer is mixed with SDS. An environment-friendly degradable polymer, xanthan gum, is found to be a significant drag reduction additive. Ice slurry systems, can give less pressure drops compared with chilled water system for certain condtions. Drag reduction additives were also effective for the ice slurry system.
In this study, the influence of a frost formed on the vertical plate for different operating conditions(the temperature of the air, the humidity of the air, the velocity of the air, and the temperature of the cooling plate) is investigated. The performance of the heat exchanger is examined by introducing a parameter such as the energy transfer resistance. Correlations which relate frost density, frost thickness and energy transfer resistance to Reynolds number, air temperature and humidity, and cooling plate temperature are developed. Static pressure drop and air flow rate are expressed as a function of free flow area of air.
A numerical analysis has been conducted on the dehumidification phenomena of rotary absorptive dehumidifier. Parameters that affect the dehumidification efficiency, such as regeneration temperature, humidity, rotor angular velocity, air flow rate and regeneration section angle are studied and optimum driving conditions are determined from the results, Furthermore three new types of dehumidification method are developed to improve the efficiency They are named MODE 2, 3 and 4, while the present one MODE 1. Cooling zone has been constructed between regeneration and process Bone in MODE 2 and as a result exit temperature of the process air decreases. MODE 3 an improvement of MODE 2, recirculates the cooling air into the regeneration zone and regeneration input as well as exit temperature decreases. In MODE 4, some of tee regeneration air is recirculated and it cuts down the regeneration input. Among them MODE 3, showed the best dehumidification efficiency.
This study is a preliminary research to develop design principles for environmentally friendly housing. The purposes of study are to investigate the literatures related passive design for summer and theory of ventilation, to analyze the indoor airflow patterns in traditional Korean house during summer, and to propose the design factors for effective passive cooling system. The analysis for airflow patterns was focused on the ‘An bang’and the ‘Dae Chung’in the ‘An Chae’of a traditional house located in Seoul. Field measurements of air temperature and air velocity were carried out at 30 different measuring points with 8 different window-opening conditions. The measurements were taken on the hottest summer days in August 2000. It is concluded that from an environmentally friendly standpoint design factors to control indoor thermal environment by a passive cooling system during the summer are as follows; ceiling structure has thermal performance like a time-lag effect, optimum height and length of eaves which can prevent sunlight and divert airflow toward the sitting level, building arrangement acceptable the prevailing wind, strategic window arrangement which makes cross ventilation possible (especially north-south) at the sitting level, window opening condition which is possible to intersect two cross-ventilation stream at the main living areas, northward windows remaining in shade to create the air pressure difference, and planning building shape like a bracket that has optimum width and depth.
A new air-cooled waste heat removal system with a direct contact heat exchanger was designed for SMRs requiring 200 MW of waste heat removal. Conventional air-cooled systems use fin structure causing high thermal resistance; therefore, a large cooling tower is required. The new design replaces the fin structure with a vertical string type direct contact heat exchanger which has the most effective performance among tested heat exchangers in a previous study. The design results showed that the new system requires a cooling tower 50% smaller than that of the conventional system. However, droplet formation on a falling film along a string caused by Rayleigh-Plateau instability decreases heat removal performance of the new system. Analysis of Rayleigh-Plateau instability considering drag force on the falling film surface was developed. The analysis results showed that the instability can be prevented by providing thick string. The instability is prevented when the string radius exceeds the capillary length of liquid by a factor of 0.257 under stagnant air and 0.260 under 5 m/s air velocity.
A numerical study was conducted to calculate the cooling capacity variation of a power plant ACC (air-cooled condenser) caused by changes in operating conditions. A numerical model was developed using the ${\varepsilon}-NTU$ and finite volume method, containing 100 elements for a single low fin tube. The model was validated through a comparison of cooling capacity between the simulated values and manufacturer's data. Even though simple assumptions and previously presented heat transfer correlations were applied to the model, the prediction error was 1.9%. The simulated variables of the operating conditions were air velocity, air temperature, and mass flux. The analysis on the variation of thermal resistance along the tube showed that the water side thermal resistance was higher than the air side thermal resistance at the downstream end of the tube, indicating that the ACC capacity could be increased by applying technology to enhance in-tube flow condensation heat transfer.
A computational study of BLDC motor is presented to elucidate thermo-flow characteristics in winding and bearing with heat generation. Rotation of rotor and blades drives influx of ambient air into the rotor inlet and the inflow rates are predicted more at the front-side inlet than at the rear-side, which can be ascribed to the different pressure distribution. Recirculation zone appears in the tiny interfaces between windings, however, showing the enhanced cooling performance due to the higher velocity distribution near the rotor wall. In contrast, flow separation and incline angle of bearing groove, and relatively slower velocity distribution cause poor cooling performance and therefore the redesign of the bearing groove is significantly required.
We performed the experimental and the numerical study on the comparison of thermal comfort performance indices for cooling loads in the lecture room for 4 cases: Fan coil unit(FCU) or 4-way cassette air-conditioner is respectively operated with the ventilation system or without. We measured the velocity, the temperature distribution and predicted mean vote(PMV) value in the lecture room for 4 different air-conditioning methods. Effective draft temperature(EDT) and PMV were investigated to analyze the characteristics of two thermal comfort indices in the lecture room and to compare their values each other. From the results we knew that there is the similarity between PMV values and EDTs when the room is air-conditioned for cooling loads. It turned out that definition of the control temperature is very important when the EDT is calculated. Finally EDT should not be used to predict the accurate thermal comfort in case that the temperature and humidity are suddenly varied and the zone affected by the solar and inner wall radiation.
