Thermodynamic Equilibrium and Efficiency of Ethylene Glycol Steam Reforming for Hydrogen Production (에틸렌글리콜의 수증기 개질반응을 이용한 수소제조에 대한 열역학적 평형 및 효율 분석)

  • This study is purposed to analyze thermodynamic properties on the hydrogen production by ethylene glycol steam reforming. Various reaction conditions of temperatures(300~1,600 K), feed compositions(steam/carbon= 0.5~4.5), and pressures(1~30 atm) were applied to investigate the effects of the reaction conditions on the thermodynamic properties of dimethyl ether steam reforming. An endothermic steam reforming competed with an exothermic water gas shift reaction and an exothermic methanation within the applied reaction condition. Hydrogen production was initiated at the temperature of 400 K and the production rate was promoted at temperatures exceeding 500 K. An increase of steam to carbon ratio(S/C) in feed mixture over 1.0 resulted in the increase of the water gas shift reaction, which lowered the formation of carbon monoxide. The maximum hydrogen yield with minimizing loss of thermodynamic conversion efficiency was achieved at the reaction conditions of a temperature of 900 K and a steam to carbon ratio of 3.0.

Clinical Observation on Hyperthyroidism (갑상선기능항진증(甲狀腺機能亢進症)의 임상적(臨床的) 관찰(觀察))

  • A clinical analysis was made on 161 cases of hyperthyroidism seen at the Radioisotope Laboratory of Kyungpook National University Hospital. This series consisted of 144 cases of diffuse goiter and 17 cases of nodular goiter. 1) Hyperthyroidism was most prevalent in the 4th decade and male to female ratio was 1:4.6. 2) Cardinal symptoms in the order of frequency were weakness, easy fatigability, palpitation, weight loss, nervousness, perspiration, heat intolerance, increased appetite, insomnia and dysmenorrhea. 3) Major physical findings in the order of frequency were goiter, fine tremor, tachycardia, wide pulse pressure, emaciation, warm moist skin, exophthalmos, systolic hypertension and atrial fibrillation. 4) The complications were ophthalmopathy (34.2%), thyrotoxic heart disease (5.6%), thyroid crisis (1 case), pretibial myxedema (1 case) and thyrotoxic myopathy (1 case). 5) Mean values of the six hour and twenty-four hour $^{131}I$ uptakes by the thyroid glands were 67.5% and 71.6%, respectively, in diffuse goiter and 64.5% and 65.0%, respectively, in nodular goiter. 6) Mean values of twenty-four hour $PB^{131}I$ conversion ratio were 76.3% in diffuse goiter and 70.2% in nodular goiter and those of the basal metabolic rate was +51% in the former and +41% in the latter. Mean serum cholesterol level was 152mg% in diffuse goiter and that in nodular goiter was 175mg%. 7) Among the 134 cases treated with $^{131}I$, 66 cases (49.3%) were successful1y controlled with single dose and in the majority of the cases the initial therapeutic dose required was $4.1{\sim}5.0mC$ in diffuse goiter and $5.1{\sim}6.0mC$ in nodular goiter. 8) With $^{131}I$ treatment the symptoms improved in the following order: heat intolerance, emaciation, nervousness, insomnia, easy fatigability, weakness, fine tremor, goiter, perspiration, exertional dyspnea and palpitation. And in a few cases improvement of even exophthalmos was seen. 9) Following $^{131}I$ treatment myxedema occurred in 4 cases (3%) and reccurrence in 9 cases (6.8%).

  • Electrochemical studies on charge transfer reactions across the interface between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (ITIES) have greatly attracted researcher's attentions due to their wide applicability in research fields such as ion sensing and biosensing, modeling of biomembranes, pharmacokinetics, phase-transfer catalysis, fuel generation and solar energy conversion. In particular, there have been extensive efforts made on developing sensing platforms for ionic species and biomolecules via gelifying one of the liquid phases to improve mechanical stability in addition to creating microscale interfaces to reduce ohmic loss. In this review, we will mainly discuss on the basic principles, applications and future aspects of various sensing platforms utilizing ion transfer reactions across the ITIES. The ITIES is classified into four types : (i) a conventional liquid/liquid interface, (ii) a micropipette supported liquid/liquid interface, (iii) a single microhole or an array of microholes supported liquid/ liquid interface on a thin polymer film, and (iv) a microhole array liquid/liquid interface on a silicon membrane. Research efforts on developing ion selective sensors for water pollutants as well as biomolecule sensors will be highlighted based on the use of direct and assisted ion transfer reactions across these different ITIES configurations.

  • Background: Black ginseng (BG) has greatly enhanced pharmacological activities relative to white or red ginseng. However, the effect and molecular mechanism of BG on muscle growth has not yet been examined. In this study, we investigated whether BG could regulate myoblast differentiation and myotube hypertrophy. Methods: BG-treated C2C12 myoblasts were differentiated, followed by immunoblotting for myogenic regulators, immunostaining for a muscle marker, myosin heavy chain or immunoprecipitation analysis for myogenic transcription factors. Results: BG treatment of C2C12 cells resulted in the activation of Akt, thereby enhancing hetero-dimerization of MyoD and E proteins, which in turn promoted muscle-specific gene expression and myoblast differentiation. BG-treated myoblasts formed larger multinucleated myotubes with increased diameter and thickness, accompanied by enhanced Akt/mTOR/p70S6K activation. Furthermore, the BG treatment of human rhabdomyosarcoma cells restored myogenic differentiation. Conclusion: BG enhances myoblast differentiation and myotube hypertrophy by activating Akt/mTOR/p70S6k axis. Thus, our study demonstrates that BG has promising potential to treat or prevent muscle loss related to aging or other pathological conditions, such as diabetes.

Effect of Lighting Regimes on Performance and Meat Quality of Broilers (점등체계가 육계의 생산성과 육질특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The study was carried out to investigate the effect of lighting regimes on performance and meat quality of broiler. A total of 912 chicks was divided into 2 groups with male (3 replications/group, 34 heads/replication) and female (3 replications/group, 42 heads/replication). Treatments were control (C, natural lighting), T1 treatment (24L), and T2 treatment (1~2d, 24L; 2~4d, 23L+1D; 4~16d, 16L+8D; 16~21d, 18L+6D; 21~42d, 23L+1D) by lighting regimes. There was no significantly different on body weight, body weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion ratio of male and female of broilers among treatments. There was no significantly different on cooking loss and water hold capacity of all broiler's meats among treatments. Share force of lighting regimes was higher compared to control (P<0.05). There was no significantly different on common ingredients (moisture, crude protein, crude fat, and ash) of broiler's meat. Finally, lighting regimes may decrease the stress as well as improve the growth performance and meat quality of broilers

Development of the Automatic Feeder for Growing-finishing Pigs (육성비육돈용 자동급이기 사료공급장치 개발에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to develop an prototype automatic feeder (AF) for growing-finishing pigs. The main components of AF were a feed storage hopper, a feeding motor, a feed agitator, a control box and a programmable IC, which were controlled by a personal computer. The powder type feed transfer rate of AF was average $9.83{\pm}0.4\;g\;s^{-1}$. In feeding test, growing pigs (Landrace) of about 43 kg live weight were used in the study, and was fed over a 6 weeks in pens with solid concrete floors. For feeding trials with AF, the operation time of the feeding motor was set to 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 seconds per feeding. Pigs frequently used AF from 05:00 to 11:00 and from 11:00 to 17:00 without relationship to the operation time of the feeding motor. The AF operation time of the feeding motor to minimize feed loss was between 2 and 4 seconds. Pigs fed with AF had same or slightly higher average daily gam (0.8~0.9 kg) than that with a commercial feeder, and average daily feed intake (2.76~2.93 kg) and feed conversion ratio (3.10~3.66) of pigs fed with AF were same or lower than those with the commercial feeder except the operation time of the feeding motor set to 6 seconds. As a result, AF would help to use and improve the productivity of growing-finishing pigs.

  • We demonstrate the MMIC (monolithic microwave integrated circuit) frequency doublers generating stable and low-cost 29 GHz local oscillator signals from 14.5 GHz input signals. These devices were designed and fabricated by using the M MIC integration process of $0.1\;{\mu}m$ gate-length PHEMTs (pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistors) and passive components. The measurements showed S11 or -9.2 dB at 145 GHz, S22 of -18.6 dG at 29 GHz and a minimum conversion loss of 18.2 dB at 14.5 GHz with an input power or 6 dBm. Fundamental signal of 14.5 GHz were suppressed below 15.2 dBe compared to the second harmonic signal at the output port, and the isolation characteristics of fundamental signal between the input and the output port were maintained above :i0 dB in the frequency range 10.5 GHz to 18.5 GHz. The chip size of the fabricated MMIC frequency doubler is $1.5{\times}2.2\;mm^2$.

  • This paper presents a wideband doubly balanced resistive mixer fabricated using $0.5{\mu}m$ GaAs p-HEMT process. Three baluns are employed in the mixer. LO and RF baluns operating over an 8 to 20 GHz range were implemented with Marchand baluns. In order to reduce chip size, the Marchand baluns were realized by the meandering multicoupled line and inductor lines were inserted to compensate for the meandering effect. IF balun was implemented through a DC-coupled differential amplifier. The size of IF balun is $0.3{\times}0.5\;mm^2$ and the measured amplitude and phase unbalances were less than 1 dB and $5^{\circ}$, respectively from DC to 7 GHz. The mixer is $1.7{\times}1.8\;mm^2$ in size, has a conversion loss of 5 to 11 dB, and an output third order intercept(OIP3) of +10 to +15 dBm at 16 dBm LO power for the operating bandwidth.

  • This paper presents a design of high-efficiency and high-power class E power transmitter. The transmitter is composed of 300 Watt class E power amplifier and AC-DC converter. The AC-DC converter converts 220 V and 60 Hz AC to a 290 V DC. The generated DC voltage is directly applied to a bias of the class E power amplifier. Because the converter does not have DC-DC converter unit, it has very high conversion efficiency of about 98.03 %. To minimize the loss at the output of the power amplifier, high-Q inductor was implemented and deployed to the output resonant circuit. As a result, the 13.56 MHz class E power amplifier has a high power-added efficiency of 84.2 % at the peak output power of 323.6 W. The overall efficiency of class E power transmitter, including the AC-DC converter, is as high as 82.87 %.

Size-Reduced Ring-Hybrid Coupler Using Phase-Inverting Ultra-Wideband Transitions and Its Frequency Doubler Application (초광대역 위상 역전 전이 구조를 이용한 소형화된 링 하이브리드 결합기 및 주파수 체배기 응용)

  • In this paper, a new size-reduced, wideband ring-hybrid coupler is presented, and a design of a planar single-balanced doubler using the ring-hybrid is shown. This ring-hybrid coupler employs a pair of ultra-wideband transitions for phase inversion, which consists of in-phase and out of-phase transitions providing a good amplitude and phase balances for wide frequency ranges. The implemented ring-hybrid is 65 % smaller than conventional ring-hybrids, and provides 92.5 % and 81.3 % bandwidth at $\sum$ and $\Delta$ ports, respectively. Thanks to good amplitude and phase balances over wide bandwidth, the ring-hybrid can be applied to implement various balanced components. The implemented single-balanced doubler utilizing the ring-hybrid exhibits typical conversion loss of 10.5 dB for the output frequency range of 4~12 GHz with fundamental suppression level of 30 dB. The performance was also well-predicted with the nonlinear circuit simulation.
