Bypass air conditioning systems are divided into three types; an outdoor air bypass, a mixed air bypass and a return air bypass system. What makes the return air by pass system more effective is that it directs all of moist outdoor air through the cooling coil. The bypass air conditioning system can maintain indoor R.H (Relative Humidity) less than a conventional CAV (Constant Air Volume) air conditioning system by adjusting face and bypass dampers at part load. When a design sensible load (the ratio of sensible load to total sensible load) is 70 percent (at this time, RSHF (Room Sensible Heat Factor) . 0.7), indoor R.H was maintained 59 percent by the return air bypass system, but 65 percent by the conventional CAV air conditioning system (valve control system). The bypass air conditioning system can also improve IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) in many buildings where the number of air change is high.
In this paper, a personal air-conditioning system considering the human thermal adaptability is analyzed. Although the conventional personal air-conditioner was proofed to be satisfactory in providing for the thermal comfort, it is being questioned on the term of its energy efficiency. Therefore, it is important and urgent to develop new types of personal air-conditioning system with sustainable control strategy that can ensure energy saving and thermal comfort simultaneously. In this study, we first examined the problems of the conventional personal air-conditioning system with field interview and laboratory experiment in terms of usage, management and thermal comfort, and proposed the energy-saving personal air-conditioning system considering the human thermal adaptation. Then a laboratory experiment was performed to analyze the characteristics of the human thermal comfort under severe indoor thermal conditions, which were controlled using a new personal air-conditioning unit designed according to the proposal. The results help to illustrate the alleviation effect of the new personal air-conditioning system, and indicate that the thermal alleviation time is useful to maintain the thermal comfort with efficient usage of energy.
For the purpose of evaluating the thermal performance for air-barrier air conditioning system in perimeter zone, two air-conditioning systems, conventional perimeter air-conditioning system and air-barrier system, are evaluated and compared by scale model experiment and simulation during cooling season. As a result, measurement shows that supply air velocity of 1 m/s in the upstream direction at perimeter is more effective. Air-barrier system could reduce the cooling energy by $10\sim20\%$ compared with conventional system. Numerical simulation was carried out considering solar effect for reliable result. This method has improved the accuracy of numerical simulation for the space affected by the solar radiation. Both measurement and simulation results show that supply air velocity of 1 m/s at perimeter is the most effective.
For the purpose of investigating the effective removal of heating/cooling load from light-weighted building envelope, two air-conditioning systems, conventional parameter air-conditioning system and air-barrier system, are evaluated and compared by both experiment and simulation with six different cases during heating and cooling season. In addition, the characteristics of window-side building thermal load are assessed by varying supply air velocity in order to seek the optimal system operation condition. The results are as follows. 1) Air-barrier system is more effective to remove heating/cooling load at perimeter zone than conventional parameter air-conditioning system. Moreover, the better effectiveness appears during cooling season than during heating season. 2) The experiment during cooling season provides that indoor temperature of air-barrier system shows $1^{\circ}C$ less than that of the conventional system with similar outdoor air temperature profile, and indoor temperature distribution is more uniform throughout the experimented model space. It concludes that air-barrier system can achieve energy saving comparing to the conventional system. 3) The capturing efficiency of air-barrier system is 0.47 on heating season and 0.2 on cooling season with the same supply air volume. It results that the system performs effectively to remove building thermal load, moreover demonstrates high efficiency during cooling season. 4) The simulation results provide that capturing efficiency to evaluate the effective removal of building load from perimeter zone shows high value when supply air velocity is 1 m/s.

Newly designed vapor-injection heat pumps have been proposed and analyzed in the present study. An economizer-type vapor-injection (V-I) system has been employed as the standard system because of its reliability and simple control method. The V-I system has a re-cooler and re-heater for cooling and heating, respectively. Solar panels have been installed in the V-I heat pump as well as in the re-heater in order to enhance heating capacity and performance. R410A has been employed as a working fluid and performance analysis has been conducted under various conditions. Results are summarized as follows: (1) The V-I system with the re-cooler yielded a marginally higher coefficient of performance (COP) than the conventional V-I refrigeration system. (2) By increasing the re-cooler cooling capacity, enhanced system performance as compared to the conventional V-I system was observed. (3) The re-heater negatively affected the system performance; hence, the V-I heat pump with the re-heater yielded a lower COP than that of the conventional V-I heat pump used for heating. (4) Although the solar panels increased the system performance, this increase could not offset performance degradation by the re-heater.
Performance of the water/air direct contact air conditioning system, in which heat and mass are directly transferred between air and water droplet, is simulated using semi-empirical method. Direct contact system improves transport efficiency compared to conventional indirect contact system. In this study, correlations for h$_{c}$A / c$_{pm}$ which represent the capacity of direct contact system are derived as a function of air and water flowrate from the experimental data. Cooling and heating performance of the water/air direct contact air conditioning system are evaluated using these correlations.ons.
The evaluation of aluminum flat tube and louver fin heat exchangers for a condenser in residential air-conditioning applications has been conducted. A series of tests for two-different brazed aluminum heat exchangers was performed and the results were compared with conventional fin and tube heat exchangers for residential air-conditioning system. Refrigerant charge amount for a window-system air-conditioner with the brazed aluminum condenser is decreased by 35% and the volume and material of heat exchanger can be reduced by 50% compared to the conventional fin and tube heat exchangers.
The purpose of this study was to reduce the noise emitted from the package air-conditioner. The optimum design methods of the fans ware investigated experimentally through the analysis of noise problem caused by the conventional PAC system. New PAC system had decreased 6 dBA in overall noise level as compared with the conventional system by various technology.
The $CO_2$ air conditioning system installed in fuel cell vehicles could be used either for stack cooling or for cabin cooling, and thus was used for the stack cooling when additional stack heat release was required over a fixed radiator capacity for high power generation. This study investigated the performance of the stack cooling system using $CO_2$ air conditioner at various operating conditions. Also, the heat releasing effectiveness and mutual interference were analyzed for the stack cooling system using an air conditioner and compared with the conventional radiator cooling system with/without cabin cooling. The heat release of the stack cooling system with the aid of $CO_2$ air conditioner increased up to 36% more than that of the conventional radiator cooling system with cabin cooling. Furthermore, the heat release of the stack cooling system using $CO_2$ air conditioner increased more by 7% than that of the conventional radiator cooling system without cabin cooling.
This paper is an experimental study on the pleasantly suitable cool/warm air conditioning system in order to minimize the energy consumption by attaching the electronic-controlled device to the heat pump air conditioning system. While the cool/warm air conditioning, the air temperatures in the entrance and exit of the indoor heat exchangers should be checked and when the surface of heat exchanger is reached to the dew point temperature, a speed of the compressor is to be automatically controlled by anti-dewing system in order to minimize the energy consumption. At the result of this study, the energy consuming amount is saved about 5% more than that of the conventional air conditioning system by prevent unnecessary dew forming.
