  • A set of stability equations is formulated for natural convection flows adjacent to a vertical isothermal surface melting in cold pure water. It takes account of the nonparallelism of the base flows. The melting rate is regarded as a blowing velocity at the ice surface. The numerical solutions of the linear stability equations which constitute a two-point boundary value problem are accurately obtained for various values of the density extremum parameter $R=(T_m-T_{\infty})/(T_0-T_{\infty})$ in the range $0.3{\leq}R{\leq}0.6$, by using a computer code COLNEW. The blowing effects on the base flow becomes more significant as ambient temperature ($T_{\infty}$) increases to $T_{\infty}=10^{\circ}C$. The maximum decrease of heat transfer rate is about 6.4 percent. The stability results show that the melting at surface causes the critical Grashof number $G^*$ and the maximum frequency of disturbances to decrease. In comparision with the results for the conventional parallel flow model, the nonparallel flow model has a higher critical Grashof number but has lower amplification rates of disturbances than does the parallel flow model. The spatial amplification contours exhibit that the selective frequency $B_0$ of the nonparallel flow model is higher than that of the parallel flow model and that the effects of melting are rather small. The present study also indicates that the selective frequency $B_0$ can be easily predicted by the value of the frequency parameter $B^*$ at $G^*$, which comes from the neutral stability results of the nonparallel flow model.

  • A finite volume radiation solution method was applied to a non- orthogonal coordinate system for the analysis of radiative-convective heat transfer about a circular cylinder in crossflow. The crossflow Reynolds number based on the cylinder radius was 20, and the fluid Prandtl number was 0.7. The radiative heat transfer coupled with convection was reasonably predicted by the finite volume radiation solution method. The investigation includes the effects of conduction- to-radiation parameter, optical thickness, scattering albedo and cylinder wall-emissivity on heat transfer about the cylinder. As the conduction- to-radiation parameter decreases, the radiative heat transfer rate increases and conduction rate as well due to the increase in temperature gradient on the cylinder wall which is caused by radiation enhancement. With an increase in the optical thickness, the Nusselt number increases significantly and the temperature gradient shows similar behavior. Though the radiative heat transfer increases with the scattering albedo, the total heat transfer decreases. This is because the decrease in the conduction heat transfer exceeds the increase in the radiation heat transfer. As the wall- emissivity increases, the radiation absorbed in the vicinity of the cylinder wall increases and thereby the total heat transfer increases, even though the conduction heat transfer decreases.

  • Fluid flow and thermal characteristics of laminar nanofluid(water/Al2O3) flow in a circular U-bend tube have been studied numerically. In this study, the effect of Reynolds number and the solid volume fraction and the impact of the U-bend on the flow field, the heat transfer and pressure drop was investigated. Comparisons with previously published experimental works on horizontal curved tubes show good agreements between the results. Heat transfer coefficient increases by increasing the solid volume fraction of nanoparticles as well as Reynolds number. Also, the presence of the secondary flow in the curve plays a key role in increasing the average heat transfer coefficient. However, the pressure drop curve increases significantly in the tubes with the increase in nanoparticles volume fraction.

  • In this paper, the response surface method using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis to optimize the shape of a multi-blade centrifugal fan, is described. For numerical analysis, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with standard k - c turbulence model are transformed into non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system, and are discretized with finite volume approximations. Due to the large number of blades in this centrifugal fan, the flow inside of the fan is regarded as steady flow by introducing the impeller force models for economic calculations. Linear Upwind Differencing Scheme(LUDS) is used to approximate the convection terms in the governing equations. SIMPLEC algorithm is used as a velocity-pressure correction procedure. Design variables, location of cur off, radius of cut off, expansion angle of scroll and width of impeller were selected to optimize the shapes of scroll and blades. Data points for response evaluations were selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method was used for the optimization on the response surface. As a main result of the optimization, the efficiency was successfully improved. It was found that the optimization process provides reliable design of this kind of fans with reasonable computing time.

  • An optimal soot blowing system has been developed for an optimal operation of power utility boilers by both minimization of the use of steam and the number of soot blowers worked during soot blowing. Traditionally, the soot blowing system has been operated manually by operators. However, it causes the reduction of power and thermal performance degradation because all soot blowers installed in the plant should be worked simultaneously even there are lots of tubes those are not contaminated by slagging or fouling. Heat transfer area is divided into four groups, furnace, convection area including superheater, reheater and economizer, and air preheater in the present study. The condition of cleanness of the tubes is calculated by several parameters obtained by sensors. Then, a part of soot blowers works automatically where boiler tubes are contaminated. This system has been applied in a practical power plant. Therefore, comparison has been done between this system and manual operation and the results are discussed.

  • A numerical study has been done on the evolution of particle size distribution in particle laden high temperature jet flows undergoing convection, diffusion, thermophoresis and coagulation. The dynamic behavior of these particles have been modelled by approximating the particle size distribution by a lognormal function throughout the process and the moments of the particle size distribution have been used to solve the general dynamic equation. The size distributions of spherical particles in the radial and axial direction have been obtained including the effect of buoyancy. Of particular interests are the variations of geometric mean diameter, number concentration and polydispersity. Results show that buoyancy significantly alters the size distribution in both axial and radial direction. One dimensional analysis for non-spherical particles has also been done and the results have been compared with the existing experimental data.

  • The effect of sound on the heat transfer from an isothermal cylinder in cross flow is investigated by numerical analysis. The modeling is made for the laminar incompressible flow fluctuating in the range of the Reynolds number, 5.leq.Re.leq.35, by the sinusoidal acoustic field. The instantaneous response of the flow and heat transfer is simulated for various frequencies. It is shown that the heat transfer amplitude decreases and the phase lags behind the flow velocity with increase in the frequency. The time-mean effects of the acoustic field on the flow field and heat transfer, known as the acoustic and thermoacoustic streaming, are analyzed. The time-mean heat transfer coefficients are decreased around the forward stagnation point but increased in the wake region. Such a local difference in heat transfer coefficients is a function of the frequency and becomes greatest at some frequency. However, with balance between the local increase and decrease, the overall heat transfer coefficient is almost unaffected by sound.

  • The gridless (or meshfree) methods, such as MPS, SPH, FPM an so forth, are feasible and robust for the problems with moving boundary and/or complicated boundary shapes, because these methods do not need to generate a grid system. In this study, a gridless solver, which is based on the combination of moving least square interpolations on a cloud of points with point collocation for evaluating the derivatives of governing equations, is presented for two-dimensional unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes problem in the low Reynolds number. A MAC-type algorithm was adopted and the Poission equation for the pressure was solved by successively in the moving least square sense. Some weighing functions were tested in order to investigate the up-winding effect for the convection term. Some typical problems were solved by the presented solver for the validation and the results obtained were compared with analytic solutions and the numerical results by conventional CFD methods, such as FVM.

  • Present study is concerned with an experimental study on the cooling characteristics of heat-generating components arranged in channels which are made by printed circuit boards. To assess the thermal performance of the heat-generating components arranged by $5\times11$ in flow channel, three variables are used: the velocity of the fluid at the entrance, the height of channel, and row number of the component. The cooling characteristics of the heat-generating components such as the surface temperature rise, the adiabatic temperature rise, the adiabatic heat transfer coefficient, and the effect of thermal wake are compared with the result of the experiment and the numerical analysis. Based on the experiment analysis, some conclusions can be drawn: First of all, the experiment and numerical analysis are identical comparatively; the heat transfer coefficient increases as H/B decreases. Howeve., when H/B is over 7.2, the effect of H/B is rather trivial. The effect is the biggest at the first component from the entrance, and it decreases until the fully developed flow, where it becomes very consistent. The thermal wake function calculated for each row decreases as H/B increases.

  • Effectiveness of a 3-pass plate finned-tube heat exchanger is calculated using heat exchangelet method by changing the shape of fin and the arrangement of tubes. The alternative refrigerant R134a is taken in this study. Conduction between neighboring tubes along the fin is taken into account in addition to convection between the fin and the surrounding air. Governing equations are obtained by using energy balance in a small control volume containing a tube and fins. They are numerically solved following the tube. Effect of tube-to-tube conduction is investigated in single-phase and two-phase flows with various fin shapes and arrangements of tubes. Improvement of effectiveness by fin perforation is studied too. The results shows that perforating fins, increasing the number of tubes, and increasing the distance between neighboring tubes at the same fin area enhance the effectiveness.
