  • The pressure pain thresholds of head and neck muscles of patients suffering from tensiontype headache220, all female, ages ranged from 13 to 50 years (28.4$\pm$9.6) and 39 healthy controls, all female, ages ranged from 14 to 46 years (24.4$\pm$9.2) were recorded by the electronic algometer (Electyronic Algometer Type I, Somedic, Stockholm, Sweden). And the obtained results were as follows : 1. The pressure pain thresholds of patient group were lower than those of controls in superior sternocleidomastoid muscle, middle sternocleidomastoid muscle, and trapezius insertion muscle (P<0.001) 2. The pressure pain thresholds of patient group were not different from those of controls in anterior temporal, middle temporal, posterior temporal, deep masseter, anterior masseter, inferior masseter, medial pterygoid, posterior digastric, splenius capitus and upper trapezius muscle (P>0.05). 3. Seventy-one percent of tension-type headache patients had more than one muscle, of whicb pressure pain threshold was lowered significantly (less than mean of control - 1.5SD). 4. The pressure pain thresholds of head and neck muscles should be considered as a criterion for the diagnosis of tension-type headache.

  • Background: It is known that some analgesics as well as pain can affect the immune system. The aim of this study was to investigate the analgesic effect and immunomodulation of pregabalin (PGB) in a mouse incisional pain model. Methods: A postoperative pain model was induced by hind paw plantar incision in male BALB/c mice. Mice were randomly divided into four groups (n = 8): a saline-treated incision (incision), PGB-treated incision (PGB-incision), sham controls without incision or drug treatment (control), and a PGB-treated control (PGB-control). In the PGB treated groups, PGB was administered intraperitoneally (IP) 30 minutes before and 1 hour after the plantar incision. Changes of the mechanical nociceptive thresholds following incision were investigated. Mice were euthanized for spleen harvesting 12 hours after the plantar incision, and natural killer (NK) cytotoxicity to YAC 1 cells and lymphocyte proliferation responses to phytohemagglutinin were compared among these four groups. Results: Mechanical nociceptive thresholds were decreased after plantar incision and IP PGB administration recovered these decreased mechanical nociceptive thresholds (P < 0.001). NK activity was increased by foot incision, but NK activity in the PGB-incision group was significantly lower than that in the Incision group (P < 0.001). Incisional pain increased splenic lymphocyte proliferation, but PGB did not alter this response. Conclusions: Incisional pain alters cell immunity of the spleen in BALB/c mice. PGB showed antinocieptive effect on mouse incisional pain and attenuates the activation of NK cells in this painful condition. These results suggest that PGB treatment prevents increases in pain induced NK cell activity.

  • We consider ΜΑΡ/G/ 1 finite capacity queue with mul-tiple thresholds on buffer. The arrival of customers follows a Markov-ian arrival process(MAP). The service time of a customer depends on the queue length at service initiation of the customer. By using the embeded Markov chain method and the supplementary variable method, we obtain the queue length distribution ar departure epochs and at arbitrary epochs. This gives the loss probability and the mean waiting time by Little's law. We also give a simple numerical examples to apply the overload control in packetized networks.

  • In this paper we analyze the performance of a statistical ATM multiplexer with bursty input traffic and two thresholds in the buffer by using queueing model. Two priority levels are considered for source traffic which is modeled by Markov Modulated Poisson Process to represent the bursty characteristics. Service time distributions of two priority sources are assumed to be same and deterministic for ATM environment. The partial buffer sharing scheme with one threshold may experience a sensitive state change around the threshold. But the proposed multiplexer with two thresholds avoids this hysterical phenominon to improve the system operation.

  • Objects: This study aimed to evaluate the role of somatic delusion on the pain perception in patients with schizophrenia. It was hypothesized that pressure pain thresholds would be rather higher in schizophrenic patients who had somatic delusion than patients with other delusion. Methods The subjects were consisted of 3 groups, 23 men with schizophrenia who had somatic delusion, 25 men with schizophrenia who had other delusion, and 22 normal healthy controls. By using Algometer, pressure pain thresholds were examined to subjects on three non-tender sites with 6 weeks interval. The severity of delusion was evaluated in both patient groups. Statistically, Chi-square test, One-way ANOVA, Multivariate ANOVA, and Scheffe's test were used. Results : 1) There was significant difference between somatic and other delusion groups and normal control group at initial stage. 6 weeks later even when severity of delusion was thought to be ameliorated, this finding were sustained. 2) The severity of the components of delusion, conviction and preoccupation, were significantly decreased in both somatic delusion group and other delusion group according to the time interval. The decrements of the severity of delusion seems to be related with changes in pressure pain thresholds in both patient groups. Conclusions : We re-confirmed that both schizophrenic patient groups showed higher pressure pain thresholds compared to normal healthy control. However we failed to find the role of somatic delusion on pain perception in schizophrenia. Delusion, including somatic delusion, as a whole, seems to affect the increased level of pressure pain threshold due to attention deficit and decreased motivation in patients with schizophrenia.

  • Future high speed networks are expected to use the Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM), which provides desired quality of service for the various traffic types(e.g., voice, video and data). Proper traffic control scheme helps ensure efficient and fair operation of networks. In this paper, we analyze various related traffic-control strategies and propose a new traffic control scheme and ATM control architecture with an integrated buffer management method and multi-thresholds in order to solve the problem of each class's cell loss ratio and cell delay in ATM networks. In addition, we evaluate the performance improvement of the proposed traffic control scheme through simulation. As shown in the result, the proposed traffic control scheme improves cell loss ratio in proportion to the buffer size.

  • This study was carried out to develop control thresholds for anthracnose on red pepper. To investigate relationship between anthracnose incidence and diseased fruits, experimental plots with six treatments were established. There existed close correlation between rate of diseased fruits and yields in field (Y = -16.83X + 327.57, $R^2=0.83$), in rain shelter (Y = -4.92X + 361.02, $R^2=0.84$), and in rain shelter with rain (Y = -5.91X + 359.71, $R^2=0.76$). Control thresholds for anthracnose of pepper were 0.9% diseased fruits per plant in field and from 1.7 to 2.3% diseased fruits rate per plant in rain shelter.

  • This paper proposes a segmentation algorithm using gray-level discontinuity and surface reflectance ratio of input images obtained under different illumination conditions. Each image is divided by a certain number of subregions based on the thresholds. The thresholds are determined using the histogram of fusion image which is obtained by ANDing the multiple input images. The subregions of images are projected on the eigenspace where their bases are the major eigenvectors of image matrix. Points in the eigenspace are classified into two clusters. Images associated with the bigger cluster are fused by revised ANDing to form a combined edge image. Missing edges are detected using surface reflectance ration and chain code. The proposed algorithm obtains more accurate edge information and allows to more efficiently recognize the environment under various illumination conditions.

  • This article aims to provide a design method of warning thresholds for active safety systems based on the performance-based approach considering driver behaviors. Both positive and negative consequences of warnings are considered, and the main idea is to choose a warning threshold where the positive consequence is maximized, whereas the negative consequence is minimized. The process of the performance-based approach involves: Defining the operating scenarios; setting the trajectory models, including human characteristics; estimating the alert and nominal trajectories; estimating the performance metrics; generating a performance-metric plot; and determining the alert thresholds. This paper chose a lane-departure warning system as an example to show the usefulness of the performance-based approach. Both human and sensor characteristics were considered in the system design, and this paper provided a quantitative method to include human factors in designing active safety systems.

  • This study aimed to estimate control thresholds for managing common cutworm, Spodoptera litura Faricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) at different larval densities and growth stages of Chinese cabbage in field conditions. The percent yield reduction (Y) of Chinese cabbage infested by different densities of S. litura (X, no. of larvae/100 plants) for three weeks were estimated by Y=-21.85X+1300 (R2=0.997) 5 days after transplanting and Y=-12.1X+1382 (R2=0.998) 20 days after transplanting. Based on the relationships between the densities of S. litura larvae and the yield index of chinese cabbage, the number of larvae (2nd to 3rd instar) which caused 5% loss of yield was estimated as 2.9/100 plants 5 days after transplanting, and 5.6/100 plants 20 days after transplanting.
