  • Purpose : This study aimed to investigate the effects of a digital pegboard training program with visual and auditory feedback on hand function and visual perception in stroke patients. Methods : Twenty two participants were randomly assigned to an experimental or control group. The experimental group received training using a digital pegboard training program with visual and auditory feedback (n=11), while traditional occupational therapy was administered to the control group (n=11). Hand function was assessed before and after the intervention using the Nine-Hole Peg Test and manual function test (MFT), while visual perception was assessed using the Motor-Free Visual Perception Test-3rd edition (MVPT-3). Results : Following the intervention, both the experimental and control groups showed significant improvements in performance in the Nine-Hole Peg Test and MVPT-3 (p<.05). The improvement on both tests was significantly greater in the experimental group than in the control group (p<.05). Conclusion : The results suggest that digital pegboard training with visual and auditory feedback may improve hand function and visual perception in stroke patients. Therefore, this intervention can be effective in occupational therapy to aid the recovery of stroke patients.

  • Space perception is generally treated as a problem relevant to the ability to recognize objects. Alternatively, the data from shape perception studies contributes to discussions about the geometry of visual space. This geometry is generally acknowledged not to be Euclidian, but instead, elliptical, hyperbolic or affine, which is to say, something that admits the distortions found in so many shape perception studies. The purpose of this review article is to understand perceived shape and the geometry of visual space in the context of visually guided action. Thus, two prominent approaches that explain the relation between perception and action were compared. It is important to understand the fundamental information of how human perceive visual space and perform visually guided action for the convergence on embodied cognition, and further on artificial intelligence researches.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the value perception changes of early adolescents, who are from 5th grades to 7th grades regarding to agriculture and rural communities through debate education. Since current education policy to educate agricultural value is limited in solving stereotypes and acquiring abundant relevant knowledge about agricultural values, this study tried to test the effect of debate education for the change of value perception of early adolescents about agriculture and rural communities. Through the two weeks of a debate education course, the differences of perception changes between the experimental group and control group were analyzed. As a result, education on agriculture and rural communities through debate has a great influence on the change of value perception and thus, it could be used as a supplementary educational method for literacy education and field trip learning. Lastly, limitations and implications for the study is discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how Korean college students perceive and produce American English vowels /i, ɪ, eɪ, ${\varepsilon}$, ${\ae}$, ${\alpha}$, ɔ, oʊ, ʊ, u, ʌ/ embedded in CVC words, and further to examine the relationship between perception and production of the target vowels. Forty-two participants who are English major/double major were divided into 2 groups under different conditions: the control group took only theoretical lessons about English phonetics and the experimental group took 4-week phonetic training lessons in addition to the theoretical ones. The result of the pretest revealed that the two groups showed strong correlations between perception and production. However in the post-test, both of the two groups had no correlation between the two elements. The two groups showed changes in the correct percentage in the post-test and this had the influence on the correlations between perception and production. The control group showed the fluctuation in perception, whereas the experimental group showed improvement in production, and these changes in the post-test had an influence on the correlations between perception and production. Based on this analysis, pedagogical implications were discussed and limitations of the study were also described.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the differences in sensory processing and visual perception between school-age children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and typical children. Methods : The participants in this research were children in the first and second grade in elementary school in Kyoung-Nam Region; 25 children diagnosed with ADHD comprised the experimental group, and 51 typical children comprised the control group. To evaluate the sensory processing of the children, the Sensory Profile (SP) was used, and the Korean Developmental Test of Visual Perception-2 (K-DTVP-2) was used to assess visual perception skills. The data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0, and the Independent t-test was used to compare the sensory processing and visual perception skills of the two groups. Results : The study found differences in the Sensory Profile summary scores and factor summary scores between the two groups (p<.05). We also found differences in the visual perception index and subtest standard scores between the two groups (p<.05). Conclusion : The results of this study show that the experimental and the control groups had significant differences in sensory processing and visual perception skills. The result will contribute to the assessment and education of children with ADHD.

  • The platform screen door open-close mechanisms at today's subway are divided by "Radio Frequency method" and "Method at entrance perception sensor". In the case of "method at entrance perception sensor", there happen a lot of occasions of malfunctioning that may cause problems in terms of timeliness, swiftness and reliability of train operation and even ends up to train operation stop since the perceiving process is complicated and it is prone to have dust on lenses, position alteration by train vibration, and less reflection light in the case of new train. In this study, we find how to minimize possible problems in terms of maintenance during train operation period, and seek its alternatives in order not only to have no malfunction in perception but also to cause no disturbance in train operation through dealing organically when perceiving door open-close to minimize delay time.

  • The main goal of this study is to examine if there is a difference in the utilization of a vowel length cue between Korean and Japanese L2 learners of English in their perception and production of postvocalic coda contrast in English. Given that Japanese subjects' performances on the identification and production tasks were much better than Korean subjects' performance, we may support the prediction based on the Feature Hypothesis which maintains that L1 phonological features can facilitate the perception of L2 acoustic cue. Since vowel length contrast is a phonological feature in Japanese but not in Korean, the tasks, which assess L2 leaners' ability to discriminate vowel length contrast in English, are much easier for the Japanese group than for the Korean group. Although the Japanese subjects demonstrated a better performance than the Korean subjects, the performance of the Japanese group was worse than that of the English control group. This finding implies that L2 learners, even Japanese learners, should be taught that the durational difference of the preceding vowels is the most important cue to differentiate postvocalic contrastive codas in English.

  • We propose a novel method for object recognition using the smart tag system with a stereo vision on a pan-tilt mechanism. We developed a smart tag which included IRED device. The smart tag is attached onto the object. We also developed a stereo vision system which pans and tilts for the object image to be the centered on each whole image view. A Stereo vision system on the pan-tilt mechanism can map the position of IRED to the robot coordinate system by using pan-tilt angles. And then, to map the size and pose of the object for the robot to coordinate the system, we used a simple model-based vision algorithm. To increase the possibility of tag-based object recognition, we implemented our approach by using as easy and simple techniques as possible.

  • Purpose: This study tested the effectiveness of brochure- and video-based education on managing surgical site infections by operating room health personnel. Methods: From April 20 to May 4, 2021, 34 operating room health personnel were subjected to training on surgical site infection management using brochures and educational videos. A survey was then conducted on knowledge, perception, and adherence regarding surgical site infection management. Results: After receiving training on surgical site infection management, the knowledge score increased significantly (15.15±2.09 vs.19.70±1.96, p<.001). However, the perception and adherence scores were already near perfect before the intervention and did not further increase after the intervention. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop and utilize continuous and substantive educational programs to improve perception and adherence of surgical site infection management.
