  • Many researchers have developed the techniques of an efficient 3-D sound system based on the psycho-acoustics of spatial hearing with multimedia or virtual reality In this paper, we propose an idea for the improved 3-D sound system using conventional stereo headphones to obtain a better sound diffusion from the mono-sound recorded at an anechoic chamber. We use the HRTF (Head Related Transfer Function) for the sound localization and the wavelet filter bank with time delay for the sound diffusion. We investigate the effects of the 3-B sound depending on the length of time delay at lowest frequency band. Also the correlation coefficient of the signals between the left channel and the right channel is measured to identify the sound diffusion.

  • Multi-channel artificial reverberation algorithm to control perceived direction and distance is described in this paper. In conventional algorithms using IIR filters, reverberation time is the only parameter to be controlled. Moreover, since the convolution-based conventional algorithms apply only same impulse responses, but not considering sound localization, it was not realistic enough. The new algorithm proposed in this paper utilizes early reflections segmented according to the azimuth from which direct sound comes and controls perceived direction by panning the direct sound, and controls perceived distance by adjusting Energy Decay Curve (EDC) of reverberation and gain of the direct sound. In addition, the algorithm enhances Listener Envelopment(LEV) to make late reverberation incoherent among channels.

  • In this paper, 3D sound rendering using multichannel speakers is studied. Virtual 3D sound technology has mainly been researched with binaural system. The conventional binaural sound systems reproduce the desired sound at two arbitrary points using two speakers in 3DD space. However, it is hard to implement the localization of virtual source at back/front and top/below positions because the HRTF of an individual is unique just like the fingerprint. Most of all, the HRTF is highly sensitive to the elevation change. Multichannel sound systems have mainly been used to reproduce the sound field picked up over a certain volume rather than at specific points.   • This paper describes the implemenation of localization and visualization scheme to find out an ultrasonic source caused by defects of a power distribution line equipment. To increase the fault detection performance, $2{\times}4$ sensor array is configured with MEMS ultrasonic sensors, and from the sensor signals aquired, the azimuth and elevation angles of the ultrasonic source is estimated based on the delay-sum beam forming method. Also, to visualize the estimated location, it is marked on the background image. Experimental results show applicability of the present technique.

  • We propose a real-time post processing of nonlinear amplified signal to improve voice recognition in remote talk. In the previous research, we have found the nonlinear amplification has unique advantage for both the voice activity detection and the sound localization in remote talk. However, the original signal becomes distorted due to its nonlinear amplification and, as a result, the rest of sequence such as speech recognition show less satisfactorily results. To remedy this problem, we implement a linearization algorithm to recover the voice signal's linear characteristics after the localization has been done.

  • This study aims at establishing an digital signal processing technique to control 3-D sound localization, especially focusing our eyes on the role of information provided by Head-Related Transfer Function(HRTF). In order to clarify the cues to control the auditory distance perception, two conventional models named Hirsch-Tahara model and auditory parallax model were examined. As a result, it was shown that both models have limitations to universally explain the auditory distance perception. Hence, the auditory parallax model was extended so as to apply in broader cases of auditory distance perception. The results of the experiment by simulating HRTFs based on the extented parallax model showed that the cues provided by the new model were almost sufficient to control the perception of auditory distance from an actual sound source located within about 2 m.

  • Nowadays, various speech processing systems are being introduced in the fields of robotics. However, real-time processing and high performances are required to properly implement speech processing system for the autonomous robots. Achieving these goals requires advanced hardware techniques including intelligent software algorithms. For example, we need nonlinear amplifier boards which are able to adjust the compression radio (CR) via computer programming. And the necessity for noise reduction, double-buffering on EPLD (Erasable programmable logic device), simultaneous multi-channel AD conversion, distant sound localization will be explained in this paper. These ideas can be used to improve distant and omni-directional speech recognition. This speech processing system, based on embedded Linux system, is supposed to be mounted on the new home service robot, which is being developed at KIST (Korea Institute of Science and Technology)

다점제어를 이용한 머리전달함수의 모의에 있어서의 물리적 모의정도와 청감상의 모의정도 (On the Physical and Perceptual Precision of the Multi-point Control Method in HRTF Simulation)

  • 음상정위를 제어하는 한 방법으로 음원으로부터 모의하고자 하는 두 귀까지의 머리전달함수 (HRTF)를 모의하는 방법이 유효하다. 그러나, 이 방법을 이용한 경우, 모의계를 설계할 때의 수음점과 청취시의 수음점이 완전하게 일치하는 경우에는 정밀한 모의가 가능하나, 청취시에 머리가 이동한 경우에는 모의정도가 크게 저하하는 문제점이 있다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해, 본 논문에서는 외이도의 입구뿐만 아니라 그 근방의 복수개의 점의 음압을 제어하는 것에 의해 머리가 다소 이동하더라도 제어가 가능하도록 한 모의계의 구성 방법을 제안한다. 본 논문에서는 이 방법을 이용해 머리전달함수를 모의한 경우에 대하여 물리적인 모의정도와 청감상의 음상정위의 정확도에 대하여 종래의 방법과 비교하여 실험했다. 그 결과 복수개의 점에 있어서의 온압을 제어하는 것에 의해 청취위치가 6 cm 정도까지 이동한 경우에도 수평면상에서 방향의 지각 오차를 종래의 방법보다 적게 할 수 있다는 것을 인간을 대상으로 한 청취실험을 통해 증명했다.

웨이블릿을 이용한 입체음향의 확산감 제어 (3D Sound Diffusion Control Using Wavelets)

  • 본 논문에서는 무향실에서 녹음된 모노 음으로부터 효과적인 음의 확산감을 얻기 위해서 스테레오 헤드폰을 이용한 개선된 입체음향 시스템의 구현을 위한 알고리듬을 제안하고자 한다. 머리전달함수(HRTF)를 이용해서 음상을 정위하고 음의 확산 효과를 위해서 시간 지연을 삽입한 웨이블릿 필터 뱅크를 이용한다. 좌$.$우 머리전달함수의 샘플링률을 변화시키면서 음상 정위의 왜곡 정도를 파악한다. 계산의 복잡도를 고려하여 공간상의 정보를 잃지 않는 가장 낮은 샘플링률을 갖는 머리전달함수와 실험 음원과의 컨벌루션 처리를 통해서 2 채널의 스테레오 음을 획득한다. 헤드폰의 좌$.$우측 신호에 대한 상관계수 값의 제어를 통해서 음의 확산 정도를 비교한다. 잔향처리를 통하여 최종적인 확산 음원을 획득한다.

HRTF Measurement and Its Application for 3-D Soung Localization

  • Based on the anthropometric data of Korea male adults, a head and torso simulator(HATS) is constructed to measure its head related transfer functions (HRTFs) which can be used for three dimensional (3-D) sound localization. The HRTFs binaural impulse responses, are measured in an anechoic chamber using a burst maximum length sequence (MLS) signal of 65,535 samples and 32,768 samples acquisition at the sampling rate of 75.47kHz. Also measured are the impulse responses of a driving loudspeaker and some headphones for sound reproduction to get the exact HRTF of the HATS-alone. Through a post-processing procedure, the impulse-version HRTFs at the sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz, which have filter lengths of 512 points, are finally obtained. As an application of the measured HRTFs, a 3-D sound processor for headphone reproduction has been developed. The signal intervals to be processed can be selected and each interval is manipulated to have its diretionality and distance information by using corresponding HRTF and energy control.
