Analysis of Design Parameters For Shunt Valve and Anti-Siphon Device Used to Treat Patients with Hydrocephalus

  • The present study investigated design parameters of shunt valves and anti-siphon device used to treat patients with hydrocephalus. The shunt valve controls drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through passive deflection of a thin and small diaphragm. The anti-siphon device(ASD) is optionally connected to the valve to prevent overdrainage when the patients are in the standing position. The major design parameters influencing pressure-flow characteristics of the shunt valve were analyzed using ANSYS structural program. Experiments were performed on the commercially available valves and showed good agreements with the computer simulation. The results of the study indicated that predeflection of the shunt valve diaphragm is an important design parameter to determine the opening pressure of the valve. The predeflection was found to depend on the diaphragm tip height and could be adjusted by the diaphragm thickness and its elastic modulus. The major design parameters of the ASD were found to be the clearance (gap height) between the thin diaphragm and the flow orifice. Besides the gap height, the opening pressure of the ASD could be adjusted by the diaphragm thickness, its elastic modulus, area ratio of the diaphragm to the flow orifice. Based on the numerical simulation which considered the increased subcutaneous pressure introduced by the tissue capsule pressure on the implanted shunt valve system, optimum design parameters were proposed for the ASD.

  • Recently there is a growing Interest In mobile cellula r network providing multimedia service. However, the link bandwidth of mobile cellular network is not sufficient enough to provide satisfactory services to use rs. To overcome this problem, an adaptive framework has been proposed in this study, we propose a new method of estimating DPR(degradation period ratio) in an adaptive multimedia network where the bandwidth of ongoing call can be dynamically adjusted during its lifetime. DPR is a QoS(quality of service) parameter which represents the ratio of allocated bandwidth below a pre-defined target to the whole service time of a call. We improve estimation method of DPR using DTMC(discrete time Markov chain) model. We also calculate mean degradation period and degradation probability more precisely than in existing studies. Under Threshold CAC(call admission control) algorithm, we present analytically how to guarantee QoS to users and illustrate the method by numerical examples.   • The development of a tilting train with construction of electric line on the conventional railway is required for speed-up on the conventional railway with many curving sections. For development of tilting train, the study and development of the tilting system and tilting bogie having the different mechanism with a general high speed train will play a main role for improving the technology in the field of Korean railway The study and development of the pantograph tilting mechanism in order to keep a good contact behavior between a pantograph and a contact wire by tilting a pantograph on the opposite direction of the vehicle tilting direction. In this study, we analyzed the aerodynamic characteristic of a developing pantograph on the tilting train and obtained the contact force with catenary by aerodynamic lift force by the aerodynamic analysis. We also performed the numerical analysis for design the device controlling lift force on a pantograph. From the aerodynamic simulation and parameter study for a device to control the lift force, we will suggest the various shape and the optimal shape of it corresponding to a developing tilting pantograph. The Fluent software is used for the calculation of flow profile in this study.

  • The effect of equivalence ratio and velocity on the stability of flame in dump combustor was studied in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory scathe dump combustor operating natural gas. Traditionally, peak-to-peak pressure, fluctuation of the heat release rate and Rayleigh index were used to find and control the combustion instability. Cross correlation coefficients, Ci,j which is defined as the normalized value of the integration of the product of two of the mixer pressure, dump plane pressure and heat release rate, are introduced to see whether the flame is stable or not. Ci,j shows more sensitive to combustion status than Rayleigh index in steadily burning flame. Also, the result indicates that the amplitude of Ci,j between heat release and mixer pressure goes up before the flame at the rich de-stabilizing equivalence ratio near $\psi$=0.85. t means Ci:j at this case has a potential to detect the de-stablizing moment in prior to becoming unstable in dump combustor.

  • Recently micromachining using DPSSL(Diode Pumped Solid State Laser) with 3rd harmonic wavelength is actively studied in laser machining area. Micromachining using DPSSL have outstanding advantages as UV source comparing with excimer laser in various aspect such a maintenance cost, maskless machining, high repetition rate and so on. In this study micro-drilling of PCB type substrate which consists of Cu-PI-Cu layer was performed using DPSS Nd:YAG laser(355nm, wavelength) in vector scanning method. Experimental and numerical method(Matlab simulation, FEM) are used to optimize process parameter and control machining depth. The man mechanism of this process is laser ablation. It is known that there is large gap between energy threshold of copper and that of PI. Matlab simulation considering energy threshold of material is performed to effect of duplication of pulse and FEM thermal analysis is used to predict the ablation depth of copper. This study could be widely used in various laser micromachining including via hole microdrilling of PCB, and micromachining of semiconductor components, medical parts and printer nozzle and so on.

  • In the design of structure the forces acting on the structure are important parameter for noise and vibration control. However, in the complex structure, the forces at the injection pomt on the structure cannot be measured directly. Thus it is necessary to find out indirect force evaluation method. In thls paper forces have been measured with in-situ vibration responses and system information. Three existing techniques of indirect force measurement, viz. direct inverse, principal component analysis and regularization have been compared. It has been shown that multi-vibration responses are essential for the precise estimation of the forces. To satisfy those cond~tions, Rotary compressor is adopted as test sample, because it is very difficult to measurc the injection forces from internal excitat~on to shell. It has also been obtained that relatively higher force IS transmitted through three welding paths to the compressor shell. It shows a good agreement between direct and indirect force evaluation wlth curvature shell and plate and is investigated the possibility of force evaluation of rotary compressor as a complex structure.

  • The full automation welding has not yet been achieved partly because the mathematical model for the process parameters of a given welding task is not fully understood and quantified. Several mathematical models to control welding quality, productivity, microstructure and weld properties in arc welding processes have been studied. However, it is not an easy task to apply them to the various practical situations because the relationship between the process parameters and the bead geometry is non-linear and also they are usually dependent on the specific experimental results. Practically, it is difficult, but important to know how to establish a mathematical model that can predict the result of the actual welding process and how to select the optimum welding condition under a certain constraint. In this paper, an attempt has been made to develop an neural network model to predict the weld top-bead height as a function of key process parameters in the welding. and to compare the developed models using three different training algorithms in order to select an adequate neural network model for prediction of top-bead height.

  • Space Test Department at KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) plans to carry out the GVT(Ground Vibration Test) for the KSR(Korea Sounding Rocket)-III FM(Flight Model) which is being developed by Space Technology R&D Division. KSR-III will be an intermediate to the launch vehicle capable of carrying satellites to their orbits. GVT offers very important information to predict the behavior of KSR in its operation, and to develop the flight control and aerodynamic analysis. For development of test facilities, testing and analysis methods which can be used for the future test, Space Test Department has performed the GVT with KSR-II PFM(Proto-Flight Model) at Satellite Integration & Test Center of KARl This paper discusses the procedures, techniques and the results of it. In this test, to simulate free-free condition, test object hung in the air by 4 bungee cords specially devised. The GVT was carried out using pure random excitation technique with MIMO(Multi-Input-Multi-Output) method with three electromagnetic shakers, and poly-reference parameter estimation was used to identify the modal parameters. As the result of the test, 11 mode shapes and modal parameters below 200㎐ were identified and compared with analytical results.

Lifetime prediction of optocouplers in digital input and output modules based on bayesian tracking approaches

  • Digital input and output modules are widely used to connect digital sensors and actuators to automation systems. Digital I/O modules provide flexible connectivity extension to numerous sensors and actuators and protect systems from high voltages and currents by isolation. Components in digital I/O modules are inevitably affected by operating and environmental conditions, such as high voltage, high current, high temperature, and temperature cycling. Because digital I/O modules transfer signals or isolate the systems from unexpected voltage and current transients, their failures may result in signal transmission failures and damages to sensitive circuitry leading to system malfunction and system shutdown. In this study, the lifetime of optocouplers, one of the critical components in digital I/O modules, was predicted using Bayesian tracking approaches. Accelerated degradation tests were conducted for collecting the critical performance parameter of optocouplers, current transfer ratio (CTR), during their lifetime. Bayesian tracking approaches, including extended Kalman filter and particle filter, were applied to predict the failure. The performance of each prognostic algorithm was then compared using accuracy and robustness-based performance metrics.
