  • This study was performed to evaluate effect on color and opacity of 3 different copy-milled In-Ceram cores by glass infiltration and porcelain veneering. Color was evaluated by the $CIEL^*a^*b^*$ readings were recorded with a Colorimeter, Color difference value(${\Delta}E^*_{ab}$) was calculated and opacity was represented by the contrast ratio. The variance of each color parameter ($L^*,\;a^*,\;b^*$), color difference value, and opacity change after glass-infiltrated and after veneered with porcelain was compared. Three experimental groups were fabricated as follows. Group 1 (Alumina core) 15 Alumina blanks was infiltrated with originally marketed glass (A1) and veneered with porcelain(A1) Group 2 (modified Alumina core) : 15 Alumina blanks was infiltrated with its associated glass(S11) and veneered with porcelain(A1) Group 3 (Spinell core) : 15 Spinell blanks was infiltrated with originally developed glass(S11) and veneered with porcelain(A1). The results were as follows: 1. After glass infiltration, $L^*$ value showed decrease, $a^*$ value showed decrease only group 1(p<0.001) and $b^*$ value showed increase on group 1, increase on group 2, 3(p<0.001). 2. After porcelain veneering, $L^*$ value showed decrease(p<0.001), $a^*$ value showed increase on group 1, decrease on group 2(p<0.05) and $b^*$ value showed decrease on group 1, increase on group 2, 3 (p<0.001). 3. ${\Delta}E^*_{ab}$ between before and after glass infiltration was more than 13.77, and between after glass infiltration and after porcelain veneering more than 19.63. 4. After glass infiltration and porcelain veneering, Alumina showed the lowest $L^*,\;a^*$ value and highest $b^*$ value among 3 different groups (p<0.05). ${\Delta}E^*_{ab}$ between group 1-2, 1-3 was higher than that of group 2-3. 5. After glass infiltration, opacity showed decrease, Group 1 had the highest opacity(p<0.05), but no significant differences between group 2 and 3. Above results suggest that glass infiltration and porcelain veneering effects on color and opacity of In-Ceram core, and that modified In-Ceram Alumina uses single crowns or bridges like In-Ceram Spinell.

  • Purpose: Liver transplantation is considered as the treatment of choice in many acute and chronic liver diseases, and it is becoming more common. Since successful microscopic anastomosis of hepatic artery is a crucial requirement of successful liver transplantation, we studied and analyzed the result of hepatic artery anastomosis of liver transplantation in our liver transplantation center. Methods: 145 liver transplantations were performed between February 2005 and May 2008. Male to female ratio of the liver transplantation recipients was 3.4 : 1. Anastomosis of portal vein, hepatic vein and biliary tract was performed by the general surgeon, and anastomosis of hepatic artery was performed by the plastic surgeon under the loupe or microscopic vision. After the hepatic artery was reconstructed, anastomosed site status and flow were checked with Doppler ultrasonography intraoperatively and with contrast enhanced CT or angiography postoperatively if necessary. Results: Out of 145 liver transplantations, cadaveric liver donor was used 37 cases and living donor liver transplantation was performed 108 cases including the 2 dual donor liver transplantations. As for the baseline diseases that resulted in the liver transplantation, there were 57 cases of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma due to hepatitis B, taking up the greatest proportion. Single donor hepatic artery was used in 114 cases, and mean artery diameter was 2.92 mm and mean artery length was 24.25 mm. Hepatic artery was used as the recipient artery in every case except the 8 cases in which gastroepiploic artery was used as alternative. Out of 145 cases of hepatic artery anastomosis, 3 cases resulted in the thrombosis of the hepatic artery, requiring thrombectomy and re - anastomosis. In all 3 cases, thrombosis was found in left hepatic artery and there was no past history of hepatic artery chemoembolization. Conclusion: Incidence of hepatic artery thrombosis after the anastomosis of hepatic artery during liver transplantation was 2.1%, which is considered sufficiently low.

  • This work demonstrates the preparation of proton conducting crosslinked polymer electrolyte membranes by blending polystrene-b-poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PS-b-PHEA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) at 1 : 1 wt ratio. The PHEA block of the diblock copolymer was crosslinked with PVA using sulfosuccinic acid (SA) via the esterification reaction between -OH of membrane and -COOH of SA, as confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. Ion exchange capacity (IEC) continuously increased from 0.14 to 0.91 meq/g with increasing concentrations of SA, due to the increasing portion of charged groups in the membrane. In contrast, the water uptake increased up to 20.0 wt% of SA concentration above which it decreased monotonically. The membrane also exhibited a maximum proton conductivity of 0.024 S/cm at 20.0 wt% of SA concentration. The maximum behavior of water uptake and proton conductivity is considered to be due to competitive effect between the increase of ionic sites and the crosslinking reaction according to the SA concentration.

  • Authors have reviewed the records of seven patients of multiple rib fractures with severe flail chest who were admitted to Hanyang University Hospital during the 3 years period from 1972 through 1975. Of the seven patients studied, automobile accidents led to the injuries in 4 cases, two patients were injured in fall from a tree and on the ox-heading. All who had a blunt trauma without any open wound on the chest. The numbers of the fractured ribs accounted for 6 to 9 of the ribs including double fractures from 3 to 5 ribs. The left side fractures occurred in the 6 patients and in the right only one patient. Thus the flail segment was more often located in the left antero-lateral position than in the right lateral position [the ratio was 6:1].. All cases had associated injuries. The injuries and multiple fractures were the most common associated injuries occurring in four and five of the patients respectively. The patients were classified as having associated head injuries when they were admitted in comatose or semicomatose state. When a major degree of instability of the thoracic cage exists, adequate respiratory change is not possible. For this reason the tracheostomy was performed in five patients in an acutely injured patient with flail chest only after an endotracheal tube has been inserted or after an endotracheal suction. All patients had secondary complications in the pleural cavity, such as hemothorax or hemopneumothorax with or without intrapulmonary hemorrhage and subcutaneous emphysema. Therefore, closed thoracostomy was performed in five patients in the emergency room. The thoracotomy was required in four patients: immediate operation without closed thoracostomy was performed in two patients and the thoracotomy was indicated in two patients after closed thoracostomy, because of increasing intrathoracic hemorrhage. As to the fixation of the flail segments, authors employed two techniques; one was towel clip traction of the flail segments and the other was intramedullary insertion of Kirschner`s wire in to the double fractured rib fragments for the fixation of the flail segments [Kirschner`s wire fixation]. Because` of an different results in the course of treatment between two techniques, data from patients with towel clip traction was compared with those from patients with thoracotomy and Kirschner`s wire fixation of the flail segments. Of the three patients with towel clip traction, two patients required bronchoscopic toilet due to lung atelectasis which developed because of inadequate motion of thoracic cage and poor expectoration. This was in contrast to the four patients with thoracotomy and Kirschner`s wire fixation, who didn`t these complication because of adequate motion of the thoracic cage and subsequent good expectoration.

  • Rubiadin, a major compound of noni ($Morinda$ $citrifolia$) adventitious root, is highly valued in pharmaceutical industry due to hepatoprotective activity. To dissect rubiadin's effective extraction condition, extraction process of noni adventitious roots was performed with different solvent types, ratio of water to methanol (water, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% of methanol), extraction time, and extraction method. In contrast, we also developed a reverse- phase HPLC assay method to determine rubiadin from noni adventitious roots. The HPLC assay of rubiadin was performed by C-18 column using a gradient solvent system of methanol and water with UV detector at 280 nm. The extraction efficiency of different types of solvents were increased in order of methanol (0.08%) > ethanol (0.05%) > acetonitrile (0.03%) > acetone (0.02%) and methylene chloride (0.02%). The results of rubiadin extraction using different solvents showed that 1 hour of ultrasonic extraction was effective in order of 60% methanol (0.21%) > 80% methanol (0.13%) > 100% methanol (0.07%), 40% methanol (0.07%) and 2 hours of reflux extraction was effective in order of 60% methanol (0.21%) > 40% methanol (0.17%) > 80% methanol (0.14%). To compare the extraction efficiency of rubiadin according to the extraction methods and time for high rubiadin content, the extracts of rubiadin in noni adventitious roots were isolated with the methods of ultrasonic extraction, shaking extraction and reflux extraction. Rubiadin extracted from the methods of ultrasonic waves and shaking displayed the highest contents at 8 and 24 hours, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to investigate in vitro mass propagation methods suitable for each growth stage of A. aristata (G. Forst.) Tindale, from spore germination to sporophyte formation. Among spores germinated in $1/8-1{\times}MS$ medium and Knop medium, Knop medium yielded the highest germination percentage (87.1%). We cultured prothalli obtained from germinating spores for 8 weeks on media with different concentrations of sucrose and active carbon, as well as different concentrations and ratios of nitrogen, to select a suitable growth medium. A. aristata (G. Forst.) Tindale prothalli grew most actively in MS medium with 3% sucrose and 20 : 40 mM of $NH_4Cl$ and $KNO_3$ (total concentration of 60 mM). We investigated sporophyte formation according to soil type, finding that bedding soil mixed with perlite at a 2 : 1(v / v) ratio yielded the highest number of sporophytes per pot ($73.8/7.5{\times}7.5cm\;pot$). By contrast, when peat moss was used alone or mixed with other substrates, prothallus development and sporophyte formation were suppressed. Therefore, the most effective propagation method for A. aristata (G. Forst.) Tindale is to grow prothalli in MS medium and to induce sporophyte formation in a mixture of bedding soil and perlite (v / v = 2 : 1).

  • Experiments were conducted on sine wave fin-and-tube heat exchangers having oval tubes under wet condition. Oval tubes having an aspect ratio of 0.6 were made, by deforming 12.7mm round tubes. Twelve samples, having different fin pitch and tube row, were tested. Results showed that, for oval tube samples, the effect of fin pitch on j and f factor was not significant. As for the effect of tube row, the lowest j factor was obtained for one row configuration(81% of two row configuration), which is clear contrast to round tube samples, where the highest j factor was obtained for one row configuration. Possible reasoning is provided considering the flow and heat transfer characteristics of sine wave channel combined with connecting oval tubes. Comparison of $j/f^{1/3}$ with plain fin-and-tube heat exchanger having 15.9mm O.D. round tube reveals that present oval fin-and-tube heat exchanger shows superior thermal performance except for one row configuration. In other words, $j/f^{1/3}$ of the two row oval tube heat exchanger was 1.6~2.5 times larger than those of round tube heat exchanger, 1.4~2.4 times larger for three row configuration and 1.2~2.8 times for four row configuration.

  • This study examines the procedure of successful novel adaptation. It is well known from precedent studies that narrative structure of novels should change forms to suit the media characteristics of films. But, the changing forms of narrative structure is not a sufficient condition of successful novel adaptation, but a necessary condition. A successful adaptation could be completed with filmic expressions on the presented narrative structure. The core of filmic expression is cinematic language which means the composition and array of image and sound. The novel, Kirishma Thing deals with everyday life of high school students and it consists of six stories which are narrated by one student each in first person point of view. The film, Kirishma Thing implemented a different strategy. It reveals the same events several times to show many characters over in each person's point of view in the first half. In the second half, all the characters gathers at the rooftop of the school to have an unilinear narrative structure over one event. This film utilize all kinds of cinematic language to achieve these structures including the widescreen aspect ratio which exposes as many characters as possible in one shot, picture composition which shows the same event in a different point of view, contrast in lighting and music which differentiates and empowers the last sequence of the film.

  • Polymer dispersed liquid crystal(PDLC) composite films were made by polymerization induced phase separation method using UV-curing to investigate the effect of fabrication conditions, such as photoinitiator concentration, film thickness, polymerization temperature, and electric field during polymerization, etc., on the electro-optic properties. As the amount of photoinitiator increased, the driving voltage of PDLC device increased due to the increase of small-size liquid crystal phases. This was considered as the results from the increased interfacial area between liquid crystal (LC) and polymer matrix, since LC molecules at the interfacial regions were relatively difficult to response for the applied electric field. When the higher molecular weight oligomer (PTDA-1000) was used as matrix, the initial transmittance was observed to be relatively higher than that for the lower molecular weight oligomer (PTDA-250). Saturation transmittance for PTDA-1000 was observed at relatively lower voltage than that for PTDA-250, of which transmittance was not saturated even at 60 V. As polymerization temperature increased, the initial transmittance of resulting PDLC film increased due to the larger LC droplets formation and the more matched refractive index between LC and matrix than those cases for the lower polymerization temperature. Though driving voltage decreased for the thinner film, it was considered that optimum thickness of the film should be maintained to get some practical contrast, which is the ratio of off- and on-state transmittance. Furthermore, electro-optic properties such as initial transmittance, driving voltage, and response time were observed to be considerably affected by application of external field during polymerization.
