Low Power Contrast Enhancement for OLED Displays (OLED 디스플레이를 위한 저전력 대조비 향상 기법)

  • A low power contrast enhancement algorithm for OLED displays is proposed in this work. The proposed algorithm increases the contrast of the image based on a linear transformation function, while reducing the power consumption of OLED displays. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm extends the global contrast enhancement to local contrast enhancement using the block-based transformation function. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces the power consumption, while enhancing the contrast of an input image.

Global Contrast Enhancement Using Block based Local Contrast Improvement (블록기반 지역 명암대비 개선을 통한 전역 명암대비 향상 기법)

  • This paper proposes a scheme of global image contrast enhancement using local contrast improvement. Methods of global image contrast enhancement redistribute the image gray level distribution using histogram equalization without considering image properties, and cause the result image to include image pixels with excessive brightness. On the other hand, methods of the block-based local image contrast enhancement have blocking artifacts and a problem of eliminating important image features during an image process to reduce them. In order to solve these problems, the proposed method executes the block-based histogram equalization on temporary images that an input image is divided into various fixed-size blocks. And then it performs the global contrast enhancement by applying the global histogram equalization functions to the original input image. Since the proposed method selects the best histogram equalization function from temporary images that are improved by the block-based local image contrast enhancement, it has the advantages of both the local and global image contrast enhancement approaches.

  • Image enhancement를 하기 위한 영상처리 알고리즘 중의 하나인 contrast enhancement 알고리즘은 화면의 flickering 과 같은 부작용과 조절 가능한 contrast enhancement rate 에 대한 구현의 어려움 등으로 실제 TV와 같은 동영상에 적용하기에 어려움이 있었다. 본 논문에서는 Bin Underflow Bin Overflow(BUBO)를 이용하여 동영상에 적용할 경우에도 flickering 등의 부작용이 생기지 않으며 contrast enhancement rate 을 조절할 수 있는 효율적인 알고리즘을 제안한다. 또한 이와 관련하여 영상의 휘도 레벨에 있어서 어두운 영역의 계조와 밝은 영역의 계조를 향상시킬 수 있는 black/white level stretch 알고리즘과 전체 화면의 출력 휘도 레벨에 대한 dynamic range를 유지하면서 brightness를 조절할 수 있는 알고리즘을 제안한다.

Regional Contrast Enhancement for Local Dimming Backlight on Small-sized Mobile Display

  • This paper presents smart regional contrast enhancement technique of partitioned image for local dimming backlight on small-sized mobile display to reach two goals. One is to save the power consumption, and the other to improve contrast ratio of display image. Recently new advanced method is proposed, named local dimming method, that backlight LED is positioned on backside of the display panel. So it is important to partition an image by sub blocks and then post-processing independantly. This means regional contrast enhancement. After partitioning, we compare the mean luminance(Y) value of each sub-block image with the one of original whole image. If some blocks have the mean value lower than the one of whole image, they are processed with the proposed method and others are bypassed. Simultaneously the information of the processed blocks are transferred to BLC(Backlight LED Controller). And then the supply current of each backlight LED is reduced to realize the contrast ratio enhancement and at the same time to power consumption reduction. In addition, we verify this proposed method is free from blocking artifacts.

  • Histogram Equalization is the most popular algorithm for contrast enhancement due to its effectiveness and simplicity. In this paper, We propose the advanced contrast enhancement method using genetic algorithm. We propose a novel objective criterion for enhancement, and attempt finding the best image according to the respective criterion. Due to the high complexity of the enhancement criterion proposed, we employ a Genetic Algorithm. We compared our method with other enhancement techniques, like Global Histogram Equalization and Partially Overlapped Sub-Block Histogram Equalization(POSHE).

  • We propose a method for the classification of fatty liver by ultrasound imaging using Fuzzy Contrast Enhancement Technique and FCM. ROI images are extracted after removal of information data except ultrasound image of the liver and the kidney then image contrast is improved by Fuzzy Contrast Enhancement Algorithm. The images applied Fuzzy Contrast Enhancement Technique is applied average binarization then ROI images of liver and kidney parenchyma are extracted using Blob algorithm. Representative brightness is extracted in the liver and kidney images using the most frequent brightness level after classification of 10 brightness levels. We applied this method to ultrasound images and a radiologist confirmed the accuracy of diagnosis for fatty liver. This method would be a model for automatic method in the diagnosis of fatty liver.

Contrast Enhancement for X-ray Images Based on Combined Enhancement of Scaling and Wavelet Coefficients (웨이브렛과 기저 계수를 이용한 X-ray 영상의 대조도 향상기법)

  • An applied technique of contrast enhancement for X-ray image is proposed which is based on combined enhancement of scaling and wavelet coefficients in discrete wavelet transform space. Conventional contrast enhancement methods such as contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE), multi-scale image contrast amplification (MUSICA) and gamma correction were applied on scaling coefficients to enhance the contrast of an original. In order to enhance the detail as well as reduce the blurring caused by up scaling of contrast modified scale coefficients from lower resolution, the sigmoid manipulation function was used to manipulate wavelet coefficients. The contrast detail mammography (CDMAM) phantom was imaged and processed to measure the image line profile of results and contrast to noise ratio (CNR) comparatively. The proposed technique produced better results than direct application of various contrast enhancement methods on image itself. The proposed method can enhance contrast, and also suppress the amplification of noise components in a single process. It could be useful for various applications in medical, industrial and graphical images where contrast and detail are of importance.

  • In this paper, an image enhancement method by saturation and contrast improvement is proposed. Histogram equalization with color difference makes higher contrast. By generating saturation amplification ratio with color difference, the saturation improves effectively. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has higher contrast and more natural - look than the conventional methods.

  • This paper proposes a natural contrast enhancement algorithm that preserves the brightness of an image. In the case that an image has the partially dense distribution of intensity, conventional contrast enhancement algorithms degrade the image quality because they excessively change the intensity values. In contrast to convention algorithms, the proposed method is able to obtain a natural image with the high contrast using the concept of brightness preservation. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our algorithm.
