  • Prosodic characteristics of natural speech, especially intonation, in many cases represent specific feelings of the speaker at the time of the utterance, with relatively vast variations of speaking styles over the same text. We analyzed a collected speech corpus, recorded with ten Slovene speakers. Interpretation of observed intonation contours was done for the purpose of modelling the intonation contour in synthesis process. We devised a scheme for modeling the intonation contour for different types of intonation units based on the results of analyzing intonation contours. The intonation scheme uses a superpositional approach, which defines the intonation contour as the sum of global (intonation unit) and local (accented syllables or syntactic boundaries) components. Near-to-natural intonation contour was obtained by rules, using only the text of the utterance as input.

  • In this paper, we present an algorithm for the detection of blood vessel contours in coronary aiteriograms. The proposed algorithm is based on both matched filtering and adaptive tracking. The proposed algorithm has merits in that it overcomes the bifurcation section problem as well as narrow vessel problem. Moreover, the algorithm has fast performance as well as insensitivity to noise.

  • This paper introduces the technique of synthesizing and evaluating human utterances with exaggerated or atypical prosody. Prosody exaggeration can be implemented by manipulating either the fundamental frequency (F0) contour, the segmental durations, or the intensity contour of an utterance. Of these three prosodic elements, two or more can be exaggerated at the same time. The algorithms of synthesis and evaluation were suggested. Learner utterances exaggerated in each of the three prosodic features were evaluated with respect to their original native versions in terms of the differences in their F0 contours, the segmental durations, and the intensity contours. The measure of differences was the Euclidean distance metric between the matching points in their F0 and intensity contours. The measure was calculated after the exaggerated learner utterances were aligned by the segments and rendered identical to their native version in terms of their segmental durations. For the evaluation of the segmental durations, no prior modifications were made in durations and the same measure was used. The results from the pilot experiment suggest the viability of this measure in the evaluation of learner utterances with atypical prosody with respect to their native versions.

  • In this paper, attempts have been made to extract elemental knowledges from contours of industrial mechanical elemental parts for efficient boundary representation ( chain coding) of their contours. These elemental knowledges could be used to know-ledge representation for representing boundaries of various industrial mechanical parts. Analysis is focused on elemental knowledges of line and circle boundaries, which compose basic elements of the contours of industrial mechanical parts.

  • A new algorithm for filling the interior of contours and labelling each filled region concurrently is presented. Filling is simply accomplished by inversion method. The labelling information in every scan lines is extracted directly from current direction of chain code so that the proposed algorithm needs less comparision and is more efficient. The contours are followed by two different directions, clockwise for the outer contour and counterclockwise for the inner contour to get filling and labelling information. This algorithm can be applied in case that contours are nested or regions are continous. Simulataneously the proposed algorithm can find the structure tree of object without additional post processing.

  • This paper addresses to the emerging issues for regional/global welfare issues, with special focus on the potentials and influences of the transnational advocacy activism for human and welfare rights. Part One of the paper outlines the emergence of transnational (cyber-)activism for global welfare. It is followed by a discussion of the incompatibility between economic globalization and regional/local deprivation, as well as the potentials for welfare promotion and empowerment. Part Four critically examines the contours and complexity of informational society. The last two parts delineate, respectively, the barriers against and prospects of global welfare activism.

  • This paper addresses the problem of B-spline surface interpolation of scattered points for a hull form design, which are not arbitrarily scattered, but can be arranged in a series of contours permitting variable number of points in the contours. A new approach that allows different parameter value for each point on the same contour has been adopted. The usefulness and quality of the interpolation has been demonstrated with some experimental results.

  • From the viewpoint of general recognition system, B-spline is introduced for the approximation and recognition of human profile contours. Profile contour is approximated to the cublic B-spline curve by least square fitting so that B-Spline nodes nearly correspond with the curvature extrema of the contour. This method is designed for the spline to be good features in recognition, and also showed good approximation compared with the variants of B-spline appraximation.

  • In the recognition of similar patterns like profile contours of human faces, feature measure plays important role. We extracted effective and general feature by B-spline approximation. The nodes and vertices of the approximated curve are normalized and used as features. Since the features have both local property of curvature extrema and global property by B-spline approximation, they are superior to those of curvature extrema of the profile contour. For the image data of six sets of 56 persons, some of which are ill-made, averaged accuracy rate of 97.6 % is obtained in recognizing combinational 333 test samples.
