Purpose: This study examined the comparison of effects of non-surgical continuous and intermittent traction on pain, balance and physical function in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. Methods: A total of 30 knee osteoarthritis patients were recruited and randomized to a continuous traction group (n=10), an intermittent traction group (n=10), and a control group (n=10). The continuous traction group and intermittent traction group received a non-surgical continuous and intermittent knee joint traction workout five times a week, for 4 weeks. All subjects were assessed with the numeric rating scale (NRS), timed up and go test (TUGT), and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) before and after the 4-week treatment. Results: As a result of comparison within groups, the continuous traction group, intermittent traction group, and control group showed a significant difference for NRS, TUGT, and WOMAC after the experiment (p<0.05). According to the comparison of the three groups, the continuous traction group showed a more effectively significant difference than the intermittent traction group and the control group in the balance and physical functions before and after the experiment (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that non-surgical continuous traction treatment was effective in improving pain, balance ability, and physical function in knee osteoarthritis patients.
Objectives : Meridian sinew theory was introduced in Miraculous Pivot, Huangdi's Internal Classic, to explain in relation with locations of meridian sinews, causes, mechanisms, and treatment of diseases. The meridian sinews are understood to include muscles, tendons and ligaments, or muscles in the superficial body made up with muscles, ligaments, tendons, fascia etc. This theory shows the similarity or organic relationship between the meridian sinews and muscles. From the Hippocrates(460-385 BC) ages, traction therapy was used as a treatment method on muscular diseases such as low back pain, scoliosis, etc in western medicine. The effects of traction therapy, however, were unclear so that this study was purposed to illustrate the effectiveness of continuous traction therapy and to develop meridian sinews treatment. Methods : We made 2 hypotheses to explain the cause of scoliosis occurrence, muscles contraction and relaxation. As the hypothesis, we made the spinal model having 3 joints with wood and rubber bands. Each of the three joints in the spinal model represents the case of normal(NT; control), contraction(AT 1)and relaxation(AT 2) condition, and distance between the vertebrae joints was measured. Results : Under normal circumstance models, the normal type 1(NT 1; muscle relax state) and normal type 2(NT 2; muscle contract state) all joints were being towed equally. But in an unusual contracted situation, regardless of the relationship of joint area, contracted part of joint was not released. And in a relaxed situation, regardless of joint areas, released parts of joint were further released. These observation results mean that the effects of traction might be different from the purpose of traction therapy of Hippocrates. Conclusions : To explain the effect of traction therapy for scoliosis, the spinal cord model and scoliosis model were made. After vertebral bodies were pulled with different tensile forces, we compared the observed length of the each joints pulled. The results suggested that there were no effects of traction in objected parts with traction method from Hippocrates' design, continuous traction method. Moreover, it may worsen the symptom in worst case. Of course, our results are just the result of experimental models and clinical results may be different. More careful studies, therefore, are required.
Cervical traction effects its benefits by immobilizing the neck when it is used in a continuous manner from a reclining position. when used intermittently traction functions by elongating the neck and straightening the cervical Lordosis. This position of slight flexion opens the posterior articulations, widens the intervetebral foramina, disengages the facet surfaces, and elongates the posterior muscular tissues and Ligaments. The duration of traction is arbitary but the amount of traction is that which is tolerated by the patient and benefits the patient's problem. Application of traction in slingh flexion accomplishes the same separation with Less force and thus with Less discomfort experienced by the patient. But the effect of traction on the disks is debated.
The primary role of traction power systems is to provide reliable and continuous electrical energy to satisfy traction loads. AC traction substation transforms power from generation company and supply the power to the electric railway power line. Forced outage rate(FOR) of the equipment of substation should be used in the evaluation. This paper proposes the fast and easy way to evaluate by using Bayes' theory when a new equipment is added to the existing substation facility.
In this paper, we proposed a selection and application recommendations of ZnO arresters for DC electric traction vehicles. To decide the Continuous Operating Voltage($U_C$), the Rated Voltage($U_r$), and the Nominal Discharge Current(In), we measured and analyzed system voltages and surge currents flowing the arrester installed on a DC electric traction vehicle under running state. System voltages measured up to 1,800 V in 1,500 V-system, and surge currents were recorded up to 3 times per a running-service-route and their magnitudes were ranges of $150A{\sim}2kA$. From these results and a standard EN50163, we could proposed $U_C$, $U_r$, and In available for the 1,500 VDC electric traction vehicles.
In the continuous process systems, traction between a moving web and rollers is one of key mechanisms for the study of major issues including the distributed control of tension, guiding, wrinkling, and scratching. Energy is transferred from the driven rollers to the web and from the web to the idle rollers through traction. The characteristics of friction plays a major role in the determination of the traction force between the moving web and the rollers. In this paper, a procedure to determine the frcition coefficient between the moving web and rollers is devoloped. An experimental setup to validate the procedure is devised. Experimental results showed that the value of traction coefficient decreases as the operating web speed increases and increases as the operating web tension and wrap alngle increase.
This paper describes a selection and application recommendations of ZnO arresters on DC electric traction vehicles. We measured and analyzed the system voltages applied to arresters and the surge currents flowing arresters on DC electric traction vehicles under operation to decide the Continuous Operating Voltage($U_C$), the Rated Voltage($U_R$), and the Nominal Discharge Current($I_n$). System voltages measured up to 1,800 V during anti-breaking in 1,500 V-system, and surge currents were recorded up to 3 times per running-service-route and their magnitudes were ranges of $150A{\sim}2kA$. From these results and the standard EN50163, we proposed the Continuous Operating Voltage($U_C$) the Rated Voltage($U_R$) for the $1,500V_{dc}$ electric traction vehicles.
Selection and application recommendations of lightning arresters for DC electric traction vehicles are presented. To decide arrester specification such as continuous operating voltage(COV, $U_c$), rated voltage($U_R$), and nominal discharge current($I_n$), variations of system voltage and surge currents flowing arresters were analyzed in running-service of traction vehicles. System voltages increased up to 1,800V during anti-breaking. Surge currents recorded 3 times per running-service-route and their magnitudes were ranges of $150A{\sim}2kA$. From the field measurement and consideration of EN50163, COV, $U_c$, and $U_R$ for the $1,500V_{DC}$ traction vehicles were proposed.
This paper dealt with the performance evaluation and the diagnostic techniques of lightning arresters for DC electric traction vehicle. Field Measurements on the protective operation of lightning arresters against surge currents were carried out on running vehicles to acquire the data necessary for the diagnosis. The frequency and the magnitude of surge events were analyzed. Surge currents of $1\sim3$ times were recorded in one running service route and their magnitudes were ranges of $150A\sim2kA$. Also, an acceleration experiment on a lightning arrester by the standard lightning impulse current of 8/20 us and 5 kA was performed to know the aging characteristics. After the surge current application of 3,000 times, the reference voltage decreased by 4.5 %, and the leakage current was below 10 uA at the continuous operating voltage and about 50 uA at the rated voltage. From the experimental results, we propose a decision level of leakage current for the arrester used in this paper and designed an arrester tester which analyzes arrester condition by the magnitude of leakage current.

Insulation failure of traction motor stator coil depends on the continuous stress imposed on it and knowing its insulation condition is an issue of significance for proper safety operation. In this paper, application of the NN (Neural Network) as a scheme of the off-line PD (partial discharge) diagnosis method that occurs at the stator coil of a traction motor was studied. For PD data acquisition, three defective models were made; internal void discharge model, slot discharge model and surface discharge model. PD data for recognition were acquired from a PD detector. Statistical distributions and parameters were calculated to perform recognition between model discharge sources. These statistical distribution parameters are applied to classify PD sources by the NN with a good recognition rate on the discharge sources.
