  • A laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the effects of several factors on the phosphorus removal by waste oyster shells. The waste oyster shells used in this experiments were crushed particle, calcined particle and extracted solution. A higher efficiencies of phosphorus removal were observed, when a particle size of crushed and calcined particle were smaller. The effluent concentration of phosphorus was around 1.6mg/ι in continuous column experiment which packed with crushed particle of waste oyster shell at the influent concentration of PO4-P of 10 mg/ι. But the clogging of column occurred with increasing of throughput volume of influent. The efficiency of phosphorus removal increased with increasing of dosage amount of crushed, calcined particle and extracted solution. When the calcined particle which contained only about 1/10~1/100 of crushed particle was used, the efficiency of phosphorus removal was correspondingly equivalent to the removal efficiency obtained from crushed particle. The efficiency of phosphorus removal by calcined particle after 9 runs repeated use was decreased about 21.5% as that of the first run. The removal efficiency of 100% could have been achieved at the HRT of 18 hours during the continuous treatment of phosphorus by the solution extracted from calcined particle.

  • A continuous solution of the Dirichlet boundary value problem for the heat equation $u_t$$a2u_{xx}$ using a fuzzy system is described. We first apply the Crank-Nicolson method to obtain a discrete solution at the grid points for the heat equation. Then we find a continuous function to represent approximately the discrete values at the grid points in the form of a bicubic spline function (equation omitted) that can in turn be represented exactly by a fuzzy system. We show that the computed values at non-grid points using the bicubic spline function is much smaller than the ones obtained by linear interpolations of the values at the grid points. We also show that the fuzzy rule table in the fuzzy system representation of the bicubic spline function can be viewed as a gray scale image. Hence, the fuzzy rules provide a visual representation of the functions of two variables where the contours of different levels for the function are shown in different gray scale levels

  • Motivated by optimization considerations we revisit the work by Dontchev in [7] involving the convergence of Newton's method to a solution of a generalized equation in a Banach space setting. Using the same hypotheses and under the same computational cost we provide a finer convergence analysis for Newton's method by using more precise estimates.

  • In this study, we present a noble study far membrane transport models using chlorine resistance of polyamide RO membranes. Membrane transport mechanism is investigated by the comparison of membrane permeation performance under the continuous and Intermittent operation modes with mixed feed solution containing NaOCl and NaCl. Analysis of permeation performance indicates that solution-diffusion model and preferential adsorption-capillary flow model are relatively efficient according to operation mode. Under the continuous flow state, mass transfer depends on preferential adsorption-capillary flow model rather than solution-diffusion model. On the other hand, it prefers solution-diffusion model to preferential adsorption-capillary flow model under the stationary state. SEM images of NaOCl treated membrane surfaces strongly support these conclusions. These surface images reveal that NaOCl treated membrane in continuous operation mode exhibits ridge and valley structure in some fraction of the surface area, whereas that in intermittent operation mode shows surface degradation entirely.

  • For the development of a large-scale dialysis process for silk fibroin solution, a batch and continuous dialysis chamber was designed and built, which are to be used as a unit module for the process. A series of dialysis experiments were carried out to estimate the kinetic parameters for dialysis using the solutions of salt-solubilized silk fibroin. The solution was dialyzed by distilled water either batch-wise or continuously. Dialysis kinetics was monitored by measuring refractometery at high salt concentration and conductivity at lower salt concentration. The apparent dialysis coefficients were $5.4g/m^2-hr$ and $1.8g/m^2-hr$, for well mixed batch and continuous dialysis, respectively. The alteration of molecular weight distribution of dialyzed silk fibroin solution was monitored.

  • A dynamic density functional theory is presented for the observation of the phase revolutions of a solution-casting film of di- and tri-block copolymers under solvent evaporation conditions. With the evaporation of the solvent, the inverted phases, the minor part of the component becomes the continuous phase at the higher solvent evaporation rate, as observed in this experiment. Further simulation revealed that these inverted phases are converted into the normal phase and the major part of the component becomes the continuous phase, implying that the inverted phases observed in this experiment are unstable.

  • This paper is concerned with the impulsive control problem $$ \dot{x}(t) = f(t, x) + g(t, x)\dot{u}(t), t \in [0, T], x(0) = \overline{x}, $$ where u is a possibly discontinuous control function of bounded variation, $f : R \times R^n \mapsto R^n$ is a bounded and Lipschitz continuous function, and $g : R \times R^n \mapsto R^n$ is continuously differentiable w.r.t. the variable x and satisfies $\mid$g(t,\cdot) - g(s,\cdot)$\mid$ \leq \phi(t) - \phi(s)$, for some increasing function $\phi$ and every s < t. We show that the map $u \mapsto x_u$ is Lipschitz continuous when u ranges in the set of step functions whose total variations are uniformly bounded, where $x_u$ is the solution of the impulsive control system corresponding to u. We also define the generalized solution of the impulsive control system corresponding to a measurable control functin of bounded variation.

  • This study was conducted to know the removal characteristics of ammonia nitrogen by commercially available cation exchange resins. Eight acidic cation exchange resins were investigated in batch reactors. Among them, the most effective resin for ammonia removal in solution was PK228, which was a strong acidic resin of $Na^{+}$ type. PK228 was compared with activated carbon and natural zeolite. The effects of cation exchange capacity, ammonia concentration, resin amount, temperature and pH on ammonia removal by PK228 were investigated in batch reactor, and the effect of effluent velocity in continuous column reactor. Strong acidic resins of porous type were more effective than week acidic resins or gel type resins for ammonia removal in solution. PK228 was more effective than activated carbon and natural zeolite for ammonia removal in batch reactor. With increasing initial ammonia concentration, the amount of ammonia removed by PK228 increased, but the proportion of removed ammonia to initial ammonia concentration decreased. The effect or temperature on ammonia removal by PK228 was very slight. The ammonia removal to acidic solution was more effective than that at basic solution. With decreasing effluent velocity of solution through column, breakthrough point extended, and ammonia removal capacity increased.d.
