Study on Reduction Unburned Carbon Contents in Low Quality Fly Ash from Vietnam (베트남 저품위 비산재의 미연탄소 함량 저감 연구)

  • According to Vietnam government establishes additional thermal power plant, processing the coal ash from power plant is urgent issue. This study targeted reducing unburned carbon contents in low quality fly ash to below 6% that according to international standards. As a result, the unburned carbon contents of low quality fly ash was high and irregular as 5.3~23.6%, and it was possible to reduce unburned cabon contents to under 6%, in case of unburned carbon contents below 9.8% ashes using air classification, in case of unburned carbon contents below 23.6% ashes using combined process composed of air classification and electrostatic separation.

Strength Characteristics of Light-Weighted Soils Mixed with EPS and Dredged Soils (준설토와 EPS를 혼합한 경량혼합처리토의 강도 특성)

  • Recycling of dredged soils as construction materials is experimently discussed in this paper. The strength of light-weighted soils(LWS) consisting of expanded polystyrene(EPS), dredged soils and cement is characterized by uniaxial and triaxial compression tests with varying initial water contents of dredged soils, the EPS volume and cement contents, and expanded ratio of EPS. Test results show that the strength of light-weighted soils increases with adding cement contents, whereas the strength increases with decreasing initial water contents of dredged soils and expanded ratio of EPS. It was, however, found that increasing the EPS volume makes a lower the strength of light-weighted soils.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the properties of fine particles in the process of producing crushed fine aggregates under various fine particle contents. According to the test results, when fine particles are added as substitution of aggregates by about 10%, it shows that the qualities of interlocking block such as compressive strength, flexural strength and absorption ratio are improved. The application of fine particles provide various advantages in the sides of recycling of materials

Study on Recycling of Waste Rubbers as Medium Components for Hydroponic Culture of Rose (장미 양액재배 배지의 구성요소로서 폐고무의 재활용에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the efficient disposal of the waste rubber is necessary due to increasing amount of the waste rubbers. In this paper, method of recycling waste rubbers as components of medium for hydroponic rose culture was suggested. We investigated growth of rose, and macro- and micro-elements, pH and EC of the media amended with waste rubber, In the beginning of culture, stress symptoms such as thin brittle stem and incipient wilting were observed, but they disappeared in a few weeks. Concentration of $Zn^{2+}$ in media at flowering increased in proportion to contents of waste tire in the media. pH of media at flowering were in the range of 5.70 to 6.35. Rose growth in all media, except in wasterock wool mixed with EPDM powder at 9:3 ratio, was normal and equivalent to the control in terms of stem length, number of stems harvested and fresh weight.

Basic Properties of Waste Wood-Plastic Composite Panels by Hot Press Molding Method (열압 성형법에 의한 폐목재-플라스틱 복합패널의 기초적 성질)

  • A styrene solution of waste expanded polystyrene with a crosslinking agent and an initiator was used as a binder for waste wood-plastic composite panels. The waste wood-plastic composite panels are prepared with various binder contents and filler-binder ratios by using a hot press molding method. The apparent density of the composite panels is increased with increasing binder content and filler-binder ratio, while their water absorption and expansion in thickness are decreased with increasing binder content and filler-binder ratio. The maximum flexural strength and wet flexural strength of the composite panels are obtained at a binder content of 35% and a filler-binder ratio of 0.8. Decreases in the flexural strengths of the composite panels due to water immersion at 20 and $100^{\circ}C$ are hardly recognized at binder contents of 30% or more.

  • The waste garnet powder as a raw material for clay bricks was studied its recycling. The physical strength of clay bricks are closely dependent both on the contents of $SiO_2$, $Al_2$$O_3$, and $Fe_2$$O_3$in clay and on the viscosity of it. Although the garnet power has very high contents of $SiO_2$, $Al_2$$O_3$, and $Fe_2$$O_3$, it could not substituted to clay because of its low viscosity. Therefore the substitution of sand with waste garnet powder was considered to influence positively on the strength of clay bricks .Mixing ratios of {clay-sand}, {sand-garnet powder}, and {clay-sand-garnet powder} based on weight were controlled in the production of clay bricks. The properties of clay bricks such as compression strength, moisture absorption, shrinkage, and specific gravity has been evaluated. It was shown that the optimal mixing combination was found to be { clay(50%)-sand(30%)-garnet powder(20%)} as a weight basis. The present study indicated possibilities to produce commercially clay bricks with the waste garnet powder. An economical benefit will be produced in viable in view of recycling waste garnet powder.

  • Coal combustion products are generated during coal combustion and can be grouped into fly ash and bottom ash depending on collection methods. Fly ash and bottom ash can be recycled for various purposes based on their characteristics. Australia is the fourth largest coal production country in the world and reuses coal ash as cement, concrete, mine filler, and agricultural soil amendment. When fly ash is used as a supplement for cement and concrete, strength of the cement and the durability of the concrete can be improved. Use of coal combustion product for mine backfill stabilizes underground mine voids and stores a large amount of coal ash in the voids. Because of alkalinity of coal combustion products, it can neutralize acid mine drainage when used for mine backfill. In addition, it can be used as an agricultural soil amendment to improve acidity and physical properties of the soil and to supply plant nutrients. Recycling of fly ash in Australia will be further expanded because of its low trace element contents that can be toxic to plants and low radioactive element contents existing within soil background concentrations. The characteristics of coal combustion products are related to the characteristics of the coal used for combustion, and since Korea imports coal from Australia, Korean coal combustion products also can be recycled for various purposes.

The Changes of the Garbage Problem Importance through the Number of Articles, Column Headings and Contents of Dong A Ilbo (동아일보 기사 수, 단수, 내용을 통한 쓰레기 문제의 중요도 변천분석 : 1920-1990년사이)

  • Desolation of the earth due to environmental pollution is rising as a world wide problem and concern. At this point we need to look into the problem and set up a direction for the future. In order to reveal the change of garbage problems in our county's civil life, a researcher analyzed 369 garbage related articles from the first edition of Dong A Ilbo up to 1990. The following is the result of data from garbage related articles. It is organized by age and era(10 years). 1) Number of articles by year roses in 1921 after first publication of garbage problem article. In the 1930s, the number of articles drastically increased in 1937. From then on, the number of articles declined until early 1970s but roses again from 1978. 2) Yearly change in articles was a mere 1.2 columns in between 1920 to 1960. In the 1970's, relative importance increased and over 5 columns were published. Articles rose in the 1980s with over 3.4 and 5 columns. 3) The contents of the articles can be classified into cleaning problems, collecting and transporting, expenses, and recycling. Garbage disposal problems continued until the 1970s. Regarding garbage collecting problems, form of collecting container and location was discussed. Laws were revised after garbage disposal areas were discussed in the 1920s. Expenses were levied from the 1930s and rising cost and double charge problems were subjected. Garbage recycling began in the 1920s and continued until 1900s.

Study of Fundamental Properties of Latex-Modified Concrete Using Blast-furnace Slag (고로(高爐)슬래그 미분말(微粉末)을 사용(使用)한 라텍스개질(改質) 콘크리트의 기초물성(基礎物性) 연구(硏究))

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of blast-furnace slag on strength development and durability of latex-modified concrete (LMC) and ordinary portland cement concrete as slag contents. Main experimental variables were performed latex contents (0%, 10%, 15%) and slag contents (0%, 30%). The compressive and flexural strengths, chloride-ion rapid permeability and chemical attacks resistance were measured to analyze the characteristic of the developed LMC and BS-LMC(latex-modified concrete added blast-furnace slag) on hardened concrete. The test results showed that compressive and flexural strength of BS-LMC increased as the slag contents increased from 0% to 30% at the long term of curing. It considers blast furnace slag used when latex content was up to 10%. The permeability resistance of BS-LMC(latex 10%, blast 30%) was extremely good at the curing time 90 days. Also. the effects of added blast furnace slag on OPC and LMC were increased on the permeability and chemical attacks resistance.
