  • Properties of pulp fibers can be modified by LbL multilayering technology. We evaluated the effect of stock composition on the polyelectrolyte multilayering performance of pulp fibers in this study. Stock composition was varied with pulp type and fines content. Three types of pulp-Hw-BKP, BCTMP and KOCC-were treated with polyelectrolytes of poly-DADMAC and PSS. Fines content of stock were controlled at 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40%. Zeta potential of pulp fibers and charge demand of filtrate were evaluated. The highest adsorption ratio was obtained for BCTMP because of its shortest fiber length and highest specific surface area. Higher fines content in the stock increased the adsorption ratio of polyelectrolyte onto pulp fiber and it required a higher amount of polyelectrolyte for charge neutralization. For the pulp stock with higher fines content, a higher level of polyelectrolyte and the increased layer number were required to modify and stabilize the electrochemical properties of pulp fibers.

  • Monthly changes in the proximate and fatty acid compositions of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) muscle during cultivation from October 2007 to September 2008 were investigated. The lipid content increased gradually from the first stage of cultivation until March 2008 and then dramatically until May, before decreasing. The highest lipid content during cultivation was 21.6% in May, just before the fish spawns. There was a negative correlation (y=-1.1585x+87.741, $R^2$=0.9495) between the lipid and moisture contents during cultivation of chub mackerel. By contrast, the protein ($18.6{\pm}1.05%$) and ash ($1.18{\pm}0.11%$) contents were essentially unchanged during cultivation. Prominent fatty acids in chub mackerel muscle were 16:0, 18:0, 14:0 saturates, 18:1n-9, 16:1n-7, 18:1n-7 monoenes, and 22:6n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid, DHA), 20:5n-3 (eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA), and 18:2n-6 polyenes. The percentages of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), such as DHA and EPA, were higher during three months in the early stage of cultivation than they were subsequently. However, the PUFA (DHA+EPA) content (in mg/100 g of muscle) was lower in the early stage (740-796 mg/100 g muscle) than in the other stages. The highest PUFA (DHA+EPA) content was from April to May (2,749-2751 mg/100 g muscle). The PUFA content was positively correlated with the total lipid content of chub mackerel muscle during cultivation. The results indicate that cultured chub mackerel is a very good source of n-3 PUFA, such as DHA and EPA.

  • Zygosaccharomyces rouxii is an important yeast that is required in the food fermentation process due to its high salt tolerance. In this study, the responses and resistance strategies of Z. rouxii against salt stress were investigated by performing physiological analysis at membrane level. The results showed that under salt stress, cell integrity was destroyed, and the cell wall was ruptured, which was accompanied by intracellular substance spillover. With an increase of salt concentrations, intracellular Na+ content increased slightly, whereas intracellular K+ content decreased significantly, which caused the increase of the intracellular Na+/K+ ratio. In addition, in response to salt stress, the activity of Na+/K+-ATPase increased from 0.54 to 2.14 μmol/mg protein, and the ergosterol content increased to 2.42-fold to maintain membrane stability. Analysis of cell membrane fluidity and fatty acid composition showed that cell membrane fluidity decreased and unsaturated fatty acid proportions increased, leading to a 101.21% rise in the unsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratio. The results presented in this study offer guidance in understanding the salt tolerance mechanism of Z. rouxii, and in developing new strategies to increase the industrial utilization of this species under salt stress.

However, its biological activity as a functional ingredient for cosmetic products have not yet been studied. Accordingly, an investigation of the above mentioned atrributes was performed on a 50% ethanol extract of Rosa multiflora. The antioxidant activities were determined by DPPH. Additionally, the contents of total phenols and flavonoids were analyzed. Also, the phenolic compounds were detected using HPLC. The melanogenesis regulatory effect was evaluated using melanin content and cellular tyrosinase activity in B16F10 melanoma cells. The elastase inhibitory activity assay was performed for anti-wrinkle effect. The antimicrobial activity was assessed using the disc diffusion assay. The DPPH radical scavenging ability, denoted by the $SC_{50}$ value was found to be $123.1{\mu}g/ml$, whereas that of positive control (ascorbic acid) was $27.5{\mu}g/mL$. The content of total polyphenol and flavonoid content were 202 mg/g and 86.77 mg/g, respectively. In addition, astragalin and gallic acid were identified in the extract. Also, the ethanol extract significantly inhibited ${\alpha}$-MSH-induced melanogenesis in B16F10 cells. For anti-wrinkle effect, elastase inhibition activity of the ethanol extract was 53.2% at a concentration of $100{\mu}g/ml$. The antimicrobial activity of the extract against S. aureus and E. coli was observed to be 0.5 - 5%, and no significant activity was noted against C. albicans. Therefore, the ethanol extract of Rosa multiflora can be used effectively for development of functional cosmetic materials.

  • Pulps were separated from wood chips using an Electron beam irradiation (EBI) treatment without a NaOH-AQ (anthraquinone) treatment for cooking. The methods were based on a hot water treatment after EBI and two-step bleaching processes. Chemical compositions and FT-IR spectroscopy demonstrated that the content of lignin and hemicellulose in the bleached wood pulps treated with various EBI dose decreased with an increase of EBI doses. Specifically, the lignin in the bleached with pulps treated at 600 kGy of EBI dose was almost completely removed. Moreover, TGA analysis showed that a thermal stability increased with increasing the content of cellulose but the lignin decomposed slowly over the wide region.
