  • The sea-port in Northern Vietnam accounts for around one third of the total country's cargo throughput and for many decades has been playing an important role in the logistics system of the country. 11 container terminals currently operate in Northern Vietnam, concentrating in Haiphong city and Quang Ninh province. Despite the increasing demand, the competition among these container terminals has become increasingly more critical. In recent years, massive investments from both government and operators have been made to improve the capability of the local sea-port's logistics infrastructure. This critically needed comprehensive research evaluates the impact of the current logistics infrastructure condition on the competitiveness of terminals and quantitatively compares the competencies of these terminals. In order to meet such requirements, the paper first summarizes the indicators of the logistics infrastructures of the sea ports before developing and testing hypotheses to reveal the correlation between the given factors and the annual throughput of container terminals in the region. Factor analysis will then be applied to score the logistics infrastructure competency of each container terminal. A significant gap between logistics infrastructures among all container terminals was not observed and the competitiveness between container terminals is mostly driven by traditional activities including cargo handling and storage. According to the results, strategic thinking will be needed to contribute to related organizations for better decisions in investment, management, and operation.

In recent years, the cargo throughput of the region, especially, containerized cargo has increased gradually. There are totally 11 container terminals in Northern Vietnam, concentrating in Haiphong city and Quang Ninh province. Despite of increasing demand, the competition among the terminals is becoming more and more critical. The paper, firstly, summarizes factors impacting the market share of the terminals before reveal the correlation between given factors and annual container throughput. Factor analysis will be then applied to evaluate the level of terminals' logistics infrastructure. For the conclusion, strategic thinking of terminals' logistics competitiveness will be contributed to related organizations.

  • This paper deals with the case study that determine the best equipment scale to be satisfied a handing capacity of the container terminal using computer simulation techniques. The objective of this study is to suggest an operation alternative of equipment scale including container canes, transfer cranes, and yard tractors which reflects a container throughput. For the simulation, the object-oriented simulator with the special purpose of container terminal analysis is used. And the used simulator was developed to simulate the transfer crane based container terminal for yard equipment. Using the simulator, we test an existing port container terminal, PECT(Pusan East Container Terminal).

  • The Principle objective of this paper is to introduce a systematic approach to identifying similar container ports in Asia. For this, it analyses data on port facilities, port facility availability, port service level total container throughput, and economic index, by using Multidimentional Scaling (MDS) method. Based on the analysis it identifies five groupings of similar container ports in Asia within which Port comparison can be justifiably made, evaluates a present position of five groupings on the basis of factors used to compare container ports in Asia ; and finally proposes policy implications for operation efficiency of Pusan container port in comparison with Kaohsiung Port. The major implication is that both the Kaosuing and the Pusan port have to strengthen port facility to attract more traffic, and particularly, Pusan Port has to reinforce the number of berth, total length of berth. and yard areas.

  • This paper deals with a container terminal where containers are discharged by quay cranes from a ship and transported by a fleet of vehicles to the terminal yard. Since container terminals are fully utilized in general, It is important to increase terminal throughput by discharging the containers out of the ship without any delay, At the operational level, it should be decided which vehicle transports which container. The vehicle dispatching decision should be carefully made since the container discharging time increases when the quay cranes wait idle for the vehicles. This paper presents vehicle dispatching heuristics with the objective of minimizing the total container discharging time. The heuristics are based on a network flow model and a look-ahead concept. Through some experiments, the performance of the dispatching methods is evaluated.

  • Since world container throughput continues to grow, the main issues facing decision-makers at port container terminals are how to expand the existing container terminals and construct new container terminals. Simulations can be used in the decision making process tools due to its ease and ability to reflect the real world system. The object-oriented approach provides for both reusability and modularity that best fits these requirements. In this paper, the object-oriented approach to modeling and simulating general container terminals is presented. Simulation tools based on Visual C++ provide a user-friendly input and output environment through the use of an object class-library. This paper also presents the case study of a simulation of a real container terminal i. Pusan, Korea

  • Incheon port attained two million TEU of container throughput between 2013 and 2014 as a third port in domestic container throughput. It opened a new port in Song-do, Incheon in June 2015 to prepare for the continuing increase in container throughput. Therefore, it has provided the platform for being the major container port domestically and internationally. As the role of the new port increases, the role and direction of the Incheon port liner service network attracts attention. This study analyzes the centrality of the Incheon port liner service network by using SNA (Social Network Analysis), which was introduced in the maritime economics area recently, focusing on the Incheon port liner service network. We recognize the degree centrality, closeness centrality, and betweenness centrality of each port and its effect on the Incheon port liner service network. The study showed that for Incheon port, the centrality of the Busan port in Korea, and the Hong Kong port, is high outside the country. This helps us determine that the hub of the Incheon port is neither Shanghai nor Singapore, which ranks first and second, respectively, on container throughput. It is also helps us to know that eastern China's ports have not played a role of the hub of the Incheon port until now because of the relatively low centrality of eastern China's ports.

  • Free Trade Agreement(FTA) aims at abolishing tariffs on trade among nations or regions resulting in having a significant impact on maritime transportation and port. Korea made the first FTA with Chile in 2004 and the trade volume between two countries has seen significant increase. The literature on such impact, however, seems to be very limited. The main purpose of this study is, therefore, to analyze the impact of Korea-Chile Free Trade Agreement on the imported container throughput from Chile at the Busan Port. For this both cross-sectional and time series data are collected that comprise container throughput, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), import tariff, and maritime freight rate, from 2000 to 2011, and the gravity model is applied. The main result of the study shows that the dependent variables, GDP and import tariff are statistically significant, but the maritime freight rate is not consistent with regarding to statistical significance and parameter sign.

  • As the scope of supply chains expands globally, unpredictable risks continue to arise. The occurrence of these supply chain risks affects port cargo throughput and hinders port operation. In order to examine the impact of global supply chain risks on port container throughput, this study conducted an empirical analysis on the impact of variables such as the Global Supply Chain Pressure Index (GSCPI), Shanghai Container Freight Index (SCFI), Industrial Production Index, and Retail Sales Index on port traffic using the vector autoregressive(VAR) model. As a result of the analysis, the rise in GSCPI causes a short-term decrease in the throughput of Busan Port, but after a certain point, it acts as a factor increasing the throughput and affects it in the form of a wave. In addition, the industrial production index and the retail sales index were found to have no statistically significant effect on the throughput of Busan Port. In the case of SCFI, the effect was almost similar to that of GSCPI. The results of this study reveal how risks affect port cargo throughput in a situation where supply chain risks are gradually increasing, providing many implications for establishing port operation policies for future supply chain risks.
