  • The concept of Container Terminal Service has been used in respect to port service until now. There is no necessity to distinguish container terminal service by concept or property. The purpose of this study is to develop the most appropriate Service Quality in the container terminal through empirical analysis such as existing theoretical studies, expertise survey and SAS program. It is necessary to show the way of evaluating Container Terminal Service's importance and Service Quality. This study intends to understand overall satisfaction survey by Container Terminal Service's evaluation through Regression Analysis where customer satisfaction will be the dependant variable.

  • This paper aims to derive the strategies for the container terminal in Pusan. So it has focused on analyzing the current conditions of Pusan container terminal while evaluating the difficulties arising from the existing facilities/equipment and the operating system in the Pusan Korea Container Terminal through the workers at the container terminal and at off-dock CY. The object of this study is to assist the existing terminals to operate the facilities/equipment reasonably and to contribute shaping the ports policy which will be the basis of constructing new ports that will remain competitive while maintaining superiority over the ports in northeast area. According to the analysis 68% of the supplier answered that their terminal services which are the most important factor in running a terminal were superior to the other while only 28% of the user answered that they thought the current services were superior. For the areas of supplementing the terminal the people working at the terminal answered in the order of business operation equipment the number of berth service and management ability while the user answered in the order of service computer system transportation system and equipment. According to the regression analysis it became clear that there should be more effort toward improving or supplementing the facility scale facility usage charge transportation facilities which will assist in developing competitiveness of the terminal. It was also noted that management ability and business ability were mentioned as the important factors in operating a terminal.

  • This paper describes the simulation study which estimates the container crane efficiency in container terminal. In most simulation studies, it is assumed that container cranes are available at any time. Though the failures of container cranes don't occur often, they are very serious problems on terminal efficiency. As usual, the failures of container crane cause arrived ships to delay the departure time. In this study, a queueing simulation model for container terminal, which focuses on the failures of container cranes, is designed. The simulation approach appears to be the most appropriate one because it allows to avoid the usual exponential assumption on interarrivals of ships and service times of container cranes. Using the developed model, we tested the efficiency of container cranes considering failures with a real system size and performed the simulation experiment on real container terminal to validate the developed simulation model. The results of simulation experiment were analyzed using output statistics, which include the waiting times of vessels and yard tractors, the utilization for container cranes, and the berth occupancy rates.

  • It is a world trend to construct large terminal and develop automated container terminal to attract Super Post-Panamax and provide service which is based on differentiation. In fact, there is insufficient research for automatization of terminal gate since the automatization of current constructed container terminal is only focused on increasing productivity and unmanned system through the automatization of quay, yard, etc. In this paper, we have investigated advantage/disadvantage of existing gate operation systems and compared each gate operation system in the aspect of raising terminal image and the productivity. For the specific study, we have used data from actual terminal gate operation and RFID model business sponsored by MOMAF (Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries). As a result, this paper carried out an efficient gate operation system and it has been expected that it will be performed as groundwork of automated gate operation system which is for design of container terminal and improvement of gate operation system.

  • In general, the design of container yard and container handling system on container terminal are focused on operation of shipside than service about chassis from outside(C/O). It is not efficient for chassis from outside. The purpose of this paper is functional assessment of efficient container terminal and for higher performance of container terminal. first, the items which are concerned with container handling at the planning of container terminal are investigated and extracted through the practical data analysis of container terminal. Also, verified problems of planning and present condition through the functional assessment. Secondly, the improvements for container throughput in container yard are proposed and examined the effectiveness of improvements about queuing time of chassis from outside and service time of transfer crane by the evaluation decision model based upon multi criteria objectives.

  • The paper attempts to identify the Logistics Service Duality of Container Terminals and to test the model by using of the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP). Also, the research assess the practical competitiveness of Container Terminals in Kwangyang by Fuzzy technique. To conclude, we can make the following observations: (1) we classifies the Logistic Service Quality into five attributes such as Tangibility, Reliability, Responsiveness, Assurance, Empathy, (2) Assurance is drawn to the most important attribute, (3) There is a significant disparity between the operators and the users in the relative importance of the Logistics Service Quality Attributes of Container Terminal, (4) In the result of analysis of the terminals' competitiveness, C Terminal is extracted as the most superior operator. In Addition, we hope to provide useful contribution to increase Gwangyang container terminal's competitiveness and offer some insight in further research.

A Comparative Study on European Container Terminal Operation System

  • As the competition in the liner shipping industry is becoming fiercer, the shipping company is trying to find the way to keep the best competitive position by reducing the cost level as low as possible and offering the best quality of service to their customer. In order to achieve this goal, the selection of port and terminal that have the best quality of service and cost effective structure is essential for the shipping line, where they can only have a chance to save the money. In this context, the paper compares three European container terminals in order to understand the factors that have to be considered in the decision making process for the selection of terminal. And its advantages and disadvantages of each type of container terminal operation system were analyzed from the liner shipping company's point of view in terms of cost, time, flexibility, stability, hinterland connection, geographical position and terminal productivity. It is obvious that the cost factors are very important for liner shipping company to select their terminal. However, there might be even more important factors than the cost factors, such as quality of port and terminal service, mutual trust, and possibility of future development.

  • Trade between nations has been globalized since establishing the WTO(World Trade Organization). By lowering trading barriers under the WTO's system, trade in goods has been gradually increased It requires global logistic system that transports goods in between nations. To save cost of product, cargo of product is containerized and container ships to carry container cargo is going to be bigger: In the market, there are many vendors to provide artificial intelligent modules to operate container terminal. In order to integrate automated container terminal system easily and successfully, this thesis proposes high-level XML/ JMS( eXtensive Markup Language/Java Message Service) communication model and multi-agent based system architecture to share knowledges, solve problems, and active objectives by cooperating between autonomous and intelligent agents that are developed by 3rd party companies in the market. This thesis analyzed current situation of advanced automated container terminal with case studies on implemented systems and difficulties to develop automated container terminal system, reviewed technologies of intelligent agent, communication and automation that unmaned automated container terminal is required.

A Study on Operational Efficiency Improvement of Perpendicular Layout Container Terminal via introducing Interchange Transport Model (수직형 자동화 컨테이너 터미널 운영 효율성 제고를 위한 인터체인지 이송 모델 도입 방안 연구)

  • Until now, the development of design and operation model for automated container terminals has been mainly performed based on the western ports model, specializing in basic loading, and discharging operations. In the case of the Busan port, terminal operators provide basic stevedoring, as well as an additional logistics service known as 'On Dock Service' not suitable for the currently commercialized automated container terminal model. This study diagnosed the current Busan port's throughput structure and terminal operational characteristic, and proposed a modified perpendicular layout container terminal transport model named 'Interchange Transport Model' for effective management of empty container and operation costs. Although the 'Interchange Transport Model' requires an additional number of transport equipment (AGV), concerning operational efficiency and cost saving, a simulation showed 22% reduction of TAT and 9.4% reduction of annual terminal operational costs in comparison to the basic perpendicular layout model.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the nature of the relationship between several factors representing perceived port service quality and the adaptability to the marketing strategy of container terminal. An empirical study was carried out to examine not only the determinants of port service quality using PZB's SERVQUAL model but also its implications to the service marketing strategy. The data investigating the determinants of port service quality were collected from 136 managers from shipping companies by the use of questionnaire method. Factor analysis and t-test were carried out to analyze the data. The results of this study were as follows ; First, Shipping companies perceive the port service quality on two the dimensions of personnel and material aspects. Second, Shipping companies put more emphasis on the reliance of port service quality even though the port authority offers good facilities and materials as parts of port shipping quality. Third, There is a significant relationship between the purchase intention and the customer satisfaction. These findings help not only to formulate service marketing strategy based on service quality but also to be a concept tool to enhance port service quality.
