Influence of zirconia and lithium disilicate tooth- or implant-supported crowns on wear of antagonistic and adjacent teeth

  • PURPOSE. To investigate the influence of crown material (lithium-disilicate, 3Y-TZP zirconia) and abutment type (rigid implant, resin tooth with artificial periodontium) on wear performance of their antagonist teeth and adjacent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A mandibular left first molar (#36) with adjacent human teeth (mandibular left second premolar: #35, mandibular left second molar: #37) and antagonistic human teeth (maxillary left second premolar: #25, maxillary left first molar: #26, maxillary left second molar: #27) was prepared simulating a section of the jaw. Samples were made with extracted human molars (Reference), crowned implants (Implant), or crowned resin tooth analogues (Tooth). Crowns (tooth #36; n = 16/material) were milled from lithium-disilicate (Li, IPS e.max CAD) or 3Y-TZP zirconia (Zr, IPS e.max ZirCAD, both Ivoclar Vivadent). Thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TCML) in the chewing simulator were applied simulating 15 years of clinical service. Wear traces were analyzed (frequency [n], depth [㎛]) and evaluated using scanning electron pictures. Wear results were compared by one-way-ANOVA and post-hoc-Bonferroni (α = 0.05). RESULTS. After TCML, no visible wear traces were found on Zr. Li showed more wear traces (n = 30-31) than the reference (n = 21). Antagonistic teeth #26 showed more wear traces in contact to both ceramics (n = 27-29) than to the reference (n = 21). Strong wear traces (> 350 ㎛) on antagonists and their adjacent teeth were found only in crowned groups. Abutment type influenced number and depth of wear facets on the antagonistic and adjacent teeth. CONCLUSION. The clinically relevant model with human antagonistic and adjacent teeth allowed for a limited comparison of the wear situation. The total number of wear traces and strong wear on crowns, antagonistic and adjacent teeth were influenced by crown material.

Monitoring in-service performance of fibre-reinforced foamed urethane sleepers/bearers in railway urban turnout systems

  • Special track systems used to divert a train to other directions or other tracks are generally called 'railway turnout'. A traditional turnout system consists of steel rails, switches, crossings, steel plates, fasteners, screw spikes, timber bearers, ballast and formation. The wheel rail contact over the crossing transfer zone has a dip-like shape and can often cause detrimental impact loads on the railway track and its components. The large impact also emits disturbing noises (either impact or ground-borne noise) to railway neighbors. In a brown-field railway track where an existing aged infrastructure requires renewal or maintenance, some physical constraints and construction complexities may dominate the choice of track forms or certain components. With the difficulty to seek for high-quality timbers with dimensional stability, a methodology to replace aged timber bearers in harsh dynamic environments is to adopt an alternative material that could mimic responses and characteristics of timber in both static and dynamic loading conditions. A critical review has suggested an application of an alternative material called fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU). The full-scale capacity design makes use of its comparable engineering characteristics to timber, high-impact attenuation, high damping property, and a longer service life. A field trial to investigate in-situ behaviours of a turnout grillage system using an alternative material, 'fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU)' bearers, has been carried out at a complex turnout junction under heavy mixed traffics at Hornsby, New South Wales, Australia. The turnout junction was renewed using the FFU bearers altogether with new special track components. Influences of the FFU bearers on track geometry (recorded by track inspection vehicle 'AK Car'), track settlement (based on survey data), track dynamics, and acoustic characteristics have been measured. Operational train pass-by measurements have been analysed to evaluate the effectiveness of the replacement methodology. Comparative studies show that the use of FFU bearers generates higher rail and sleeper accelerations but the damping capacity of the FFU help suppress vibration transferring onto other track components. The survey data analysis suggests a small vertical settlement and negligible lateral movement of the turnout system. The static and dynamic behaviours of FFU bearers appear to equate that of natural timber but its service life is superior.

Hoek-Brown 암석에서 발생된 탄성균열의 균질화 (Homogenization of Elastic Cracks in Hoek-Brown Rock)

  • Hoek-Brown 암석에서 응력에 의해 발생되는 균열의 전파특성을 수치해석적으로 분석하기 위한 기초연구로서 탄성균열의 균질화 기법이 제안되었다. 균열의 개시조건으로 Hoek-Brown 경험식이 이용되었고, 균열의 방향 탐색을 위해 임계면법이 이용되었다. 균열물질과 무결암으로 구성된 대표체적에 대해 체적평균 응력 및 변형률 개념을 적용하여 균열과 신선암의 역학적 특성을 균질화시킴으로써 등가 이방성매질의 구성관계식을 유도하였다. 제안된 균질화모델을 포트란 코드로 작성하여 상업유한요소 코드인 COSMOSM에 이식하였다. 제안된 수치해석모델의 적합성을 검증하기 위하여 2차원 평면변형률조건에서 수치 일축압축시험을 실시하였다. 모델 상하부 가압면의 구속조건을 달리한 2가지 해석모델을 선정하여 구속조건이 일축압축시험편의 변형 및 파단면 형성형태에 미치는 영향이 분석되었다. 균열의 균질화를 고려한 수치 일축압축시험 결과는 실제 실험에서 발생되는 형태와 유사한 변형거동 및 파단면 형성 특성을 잘 나타내었다.

  • 나달식 등 한쪽 차륜과 레일의 접촉력에 기반한 기존 탈선계수식으로는 열차 주행 시 여러 가지 요인에 의해 발생하는 다양한 유형의 탈선을 이론적으로 예측하기 어렵다. 이를 보완하기 위하여 개발된 단일윤축 탈선계수는 타고오름탈선, 미끄러져오름 탈선, 전복탈선 및 이들의 복합유형 탈선을 잘 예측할 수 있고, 접촉부 마찰계수, 플렌지 각 등 기존의 탈선계수식에서 고려하던 기계적 인자뿐만 아니라 윤중감소/증가, 궤간, 차륜직경, 축상 베어링 위치 등 다양한 탈선영향인자들도 고려할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 단일윤축 탈선계수식으로 이러한 다양한 탈선영향인자들을 고려하여 기존의 나달식, 바인스톡 식 등으로 구할 수 없었던 탈선현상을 분석한다. 마지막으로 동역학 시뮬레이션을 이용하여 이론적인 단일윤축 탈선계수식 결과들의 타당성을 입증한다.

A comparative study on defluoridation capabilities of biosorbents: Isotherm, kinetics, thermodynamics, cost estimation and regeneration study

  • The presence of high fluoride concentration (> 1.5 mg/L) in water causes serious health problems such as fluorosis, infertility, brain damage, etc., which are endemic to many places in the world. This study has investigated the fluoride removal capacity of the novel activated biochar (BTS) and hydrochar (HTS) using Teff (Eragrostis tef) straw as a precursor. Activated biochar with mesoporous structures and large specific surface area of 627.7 ㎡/g were prepared via pyrolysis process. Low-cost carbonaceous hydrochar were also synthesized by an acid assisted hydrothermal carbonization process. Results obtained from both adsorbents show that the best local maximum fluoride removal was achieved at pH 2, contact time 120 min and agitation speed 200 rpm. The thermodynamic studies proved that the adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. Both adsorbents equilibrium data fitted to Langmuir isotherm. However, Freundlich isotherm fitted best for BTS. The maximum fluoride loading capacity of BTS and HTS was found to be 212 and 88.7 mg/g, respectively. The variation could primarily be attributed to a relatively larger Surface area for BTS. Hence, to treat fluoride contaminated water, BTS can be promising as an effective adsorbent.

비선형 베어링 요소를 이용한 탄성 추진 축계정렬에 관한 고찰 (A Study on Elastic Shaft Alignment Using Nonlinear Soaring Elements)

  • The effects of hull flexibility on shaft alignment are growing as ship sizes are increased mainly for container carrier and LNG carrier. In order to consider hull flexibility on a propulsion shafting system, standardization of ship service conditions is necessary because hull deformation is continuously variable according to ship service conditions. How to summarize ship service conditions is suggested based on practically applicable four viewpoints : hull, engine, loading and sea status. Effects of the external forces acting on a ship propulsion shafting system are generally commented. Several design criteria regulated by classification societies are pointed at issue which seems to have Insufficient technical background. A qualitative verification is carried out to point out the invalidity of the assumption of effective supporting position. In this work, an elastic nonlinear multi-supporting bearing system is introduced as a key concept of the elastic shaft alignment. Hertz contact theory is proved to be more proper one than projected area method in calculation of the nonlinear elastic stiffness of the bearing, The squeezing and oil film pressure calculations in the long journal bearing like an after stern tube bearing are recognized as a necessary process for elastic shaft alignment design.

  • 이상소음은 고분자 판재가 상호간에 미끄럼 운동을 할 때 마찰에 의한 스틱-슬립 메카니즘에 의하여 발생한다. 본 연구에서는 실험적 방법을 통하여 이상소음을 줄이기 위하여 가전제품에 많이 사용되는 ABS, PP, MIPS, POM 고분자 소재에 대하여 ABS를 기초로 하여 소재간의 조합이 이상소음에 미치는 영향을 알아보았다. 소재간 마찰에 의한 이상소음을 평가하기 위한 실험방법과 장치를 제안하였으며, 실험변수로는 소재의 조합뿐만 아니라 고분자 판재의 표면 거칠기, 수직 접촉하중, 상대운동 속도 등을 두었다. 본 연구를 통하여 이상소음 저감을 위해서 ABS 소재와 POM 소재 조합이 가장 좋음을 알 수 있었으며, 다른 재료조합에 대한 결과도 상호 비교하였다.

자체-센서와 미세 작동기를 위한 CNT/PVDF 및 ITO/PVDF 나노복합재료의 전기적 및 계면 내구성 비교 평가 (Interfacial Durability and Electrical Properties of CNT or ITO/PVDF Nanocomposites for Self-Sensor and Micro Actuator)

  • 자체-센서와 미세 작동기 응용을 위한 CNT와 ITO로 코팅된 나노복합재료의 계면접착 내구성과 전기적 특성을 평가하였다. 나노복합재료의 접착 및 계면 내구성은 반복하중 피로시험에 따른 전기저항도를 측정하여 평가하였다. CNT와 ITO의 고유 전기적 특성으로 인하여 CNT가 코팅된 PVDF 나노복합재료는 ITO가 코팅된 경우보다 다소 낮은 전기저항도를 나타내었으나, 모두 양호한 자체-감지능을 보여주었다. CNT/PVDF와 ITO/PVDF 나노복합재료 모두 계면 내구성은 양호함을 확인하였다. 정적 접촉각 시험을 통해 CNT와 ITO 그리고 PVDF간의 표면에너지, 접착일, 그리고 퍼짐계수를 평가하여 계면 내구성과 의 상호 관련성을 확인하였다. 수용액에서 CNT와 ITO로 코팅된 PVDF 시편의 최적의 작동성은 주파수와 전압을 달리하여 레이져 변위센서를 사용한 연신율 변화로 측정하였다. 작동된 두 나노복합재료들의 연신율은 주파수가 증가함에 따라 감소하며, 반면에 전압의 증가에 따라 상승하였다. 각 나노복합재료의 나노구조 및 고유의 전기적 특성으로 인하여, CNT/PVDF가 ITO/PVDF 보다 자체-감지 및 작동기로서 더 적합하다는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Short dental implants in the posterior maxilla: a review of the literature

  • The purpose of this study was to perform a literature review of short implants in the posterior maxilla and to assess the influence of different factors on implant success rate. A comprehensive search was conducted to retrieve articles published from 2004 to 2015 using short dental implants with lengths less than 10 mm in the posterior maxilla with at least one year of follow-up. Twenty-four of 253 papers were selected, reviewed, and produced the following results. (1) The initial survival rate of short implants in the posterior maxilla was not related to implant width, surface, or design; however, the cumulative success rate of rough-surface short implants was higher than that of machined-surface implants especially in performance of edentulous dental implants of length <7 mm. (2) While bone augmentation can be used for rehabilitation of the atrophic posterior maxilla, short dental implants may be an alternative approach with fewer biological complications. (3) The increased crown-to-implant (C/I) ratio and occlusal table (OT) values in short dental implants with favorable occlusal loading do not seem to cause peri-implant bone loss. Higher C/I ratio does not produce any negative influence on implant success. (4) Some approaches that decrease the stress in posterior short implants use an implant designed to increase bone-implant contact surface area, providing the patient with a mutually protected or canine guidance occlusion and splinting implants together with no cantilever load. The survival rate of short implants in the posterior edentulous maxilla is high, and applying short implants under strict clinical protocols seems to be a safe and predictable technique.

임플란트에 둘러싸인 채 압하된 치아의 자연회복: 증례보고 (Spontaneous Recovery of an Intruded Tooth Bounded by Implants: a Clinical Report)

  • 자연치아와 연결한 임플란트 수복물에서 종종 자연치아의 압하가 보고되곤 하지만 임플란트에 둘러싸인 자연치아의 압하에 대한 보고는 매우 드물다. 56세의 여성을 하악 우측 제1소구치는 임플란트로, 제 2소구치 치근은 포스트 수복 후 지르코니아로 각각 수복했다. 제 1대구치와 제 2대구치는 이미 임플란트로 수복되어 있었다. 기능 4개월 후 제 2소구치의 압하로 인한 대합치와의 간격이 분명히 관찰되었으나 불편감을 비롯한 이상증상은 없었다. 예후에 대한 자세한 설명 후 별다른 조치 없이 경과 관찰을 시작하였다. 3개월 후 치근단 방사선 사진상에서 원위치로의 치아 회복 시작이 관찰되었으며 다시 11개월이 경과한 후 치아의 추가 정출로 교합의 완전한 회복이 이루어졌다. 압하를 인지한지 2년 3개월째 관찰 중이다. 임플란트에 둘러싸인 자연치가 압하되고 저절로 회복되는 과정의 관찰을 통해 압하가 생기는 원인과 저절로 회복된 기전을 추정할 수 있었다.
