  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of arc current and contact velocity on the erosion of silver-based contact materials to be used in low voltage circuit breakers. The opening velocity during breaking, which is constant, ranges between 2m/s to 6m/s in the 415V $25kA_{rms}$. Contact erosion is evaluated by measuring the mass change of the cathode and anode. The results show that the increase in opening velocity from 2m/s to 6m/s leads to a decrease in the contact erosion. It is shown that the material transfer from one electrode to another depends on the transfer charge and the opening velocity of the contacts. The contact pairs of AgWC/AgCdO are superior to $AgWC/AgSnO_2In_2O_3$ or AgWC/AgC contact pairs in the contact erosion.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of arc current and contact velocity on the erosion of silver contact to be used in low voltage circuit breakers. The arc current range from $2kA_{rms}$ to $20kA_{rms}$. A test system allows the control of the opening velocity profiles with contact velocities up to 10m/s and also enables the synchronization of the contact opening with a point on the arc current waveform. Contact erosion is evaluated by measuring the mass change of the cathode and anode. The results show that increase the opening velocity from 2m/s to 6m/s leads to an decrease in the contact erosion. The material transfer from one electrode to another is shown to depend on the transfer charge and the opening velocity of the contacts.

  • The electrical contact characteristics including temperature rise, contact resistance and arc erosion rate of the $Ag-SnO_2$ materials with increased $SnO_2$ content were investigated during the repeated make-and-break operations. The thickness of arcing melting layer reduces by half and the arc erosion rate decreases more than 70% under 10000 times operations at AC 10 A with the $SnO_2$ content increasing from 15 wt.% to 45 wt.%, on one hand, temperature rise and contact resistance increase obviously but could be reduced to the same order of conventional $Ag-SnO_2$ materials by increasing the contact force. The microstructure evolution and the effect of $SnO_2$ on the arc erosion, contact resistance were analyzed.

  • This paper describes a Accelerated Life Test (ALT) with the electrical contact erosion suitable to the evaluations of high-reliability and durability devices such as magnetic contactor. Recently, an electrical devices company was interested in accelerated life test (ALT), the product liability (PL) and the short-term testing model of electrical life test (ELT). In order to estimate a model for testing fee and period, need to the statistical analysis method with the acceleration factor(AF). Usually customer/manufacturer regard their device failure to the over-current or heavy duty condition, while devices view shape of contact erosion owing to operational duty problem. In this paper, additional method of evaluation estimated the operated cycles by weight of contact erosion with a used of regression analysis by MINITAB.

  • Electrical contact property of the W-20wt%Cu contact materials manufactured by liquid phase sintering of nanocomposite W-Cu powders was investigated and discussed in terms of microstructural development during performance test. Nanocomposite powders were prepared by hydrogen reduction of ball milled W-Cu oxide mixture. They underwent complete densification and microstructural homogenization during liquid phase sintering. As a consequence, the W-Cu contacts produced from nanocomposite powders showed superior contact property of lower arc erosion and stable contact resistance. This might be mostly due to the fact that the arc erosion by evaporation of Cu liquid droplets and surface cracking remarkably became weakened. It is concluded that the improvement of anti-arc erosion of the composite specimen is basically attributed to microstructural homogeneity.

  • The properties of sintered Ag-SnO$_2$contacts which contain the second oxide were investigated with hardeness, workability, electrical conductivity and are erosion. Ag-SnO$_2$contacts containing ZnO or Bi$_2$O$_3$have most excellent workability and arc erosion endurance.

  • The paper reports on a study of the influence of the silicone oils on the tracking and erosion resistance and hydrophobicity of SIR. Two silicone oils(A, B) having different chemical structure were selected in consideration of goof hydrophobicity and processability. Tracking and erosion resistance of SIR was investigated by the rotating wheel dip test (RWDT). In this test tracking and erosion areas due to glow and partial arc discharges cause an increase in the leakage current with an increase in time. Leakage current of SIR was decreased with increasing ratio of oil A/B. SIR was exposed to corona discharges in air and the specimens were analyzed with contact angle. It was observed that the contact angle of SIR was increased gradually in time. The recovery of hydrophobicity was increased with increasing ratio of oil A/B.

  • W/WC-Cu/Ag contacts of 60wt%-40wt% base and contacts with additives(Ni, Co, C) of 1wt% below were prepared by a press-sinter-infiltrate process to compare with their physical properties and arc erosion characteristics. In physical properties, electrical conductivity of contacts with additive is lower than that of base contacts but hardness is higher. The results of arc test show that the erosion rate of contact with -0.1wt% Ni is decreased.

  • A physically-based soil-water erosion model with simple hydrology and Rose & Hairsine's erosion concept is described, and was implemented in the form of computer program. The model derived from the concept of stream power(Bagnold, 1977) considers settling velocity characteristics of the soil and distinguishes between the processes of entrainment and re-entrainment. It deals separately with rill flow and sheet flow, handles vegetation in terms of soil contact cover, and has the ability to simulate soil movement on nonuniform slopes. The model predicted sediment concentrations reasonably with the results of Mclsaac et al. (1990). It showed a capability to quantitatively predict the movement of soil on uniform and nonuniform slopes. Among the model parameters, soil depositability $({\phi})$ was the most sensitive from the sensitivity analysis.

  • Aluminum films were chemically vapor deposited for the metallization of the integrated circuits and the spiking characteristics of the direct CVD Al/Si contacts were investigated. When the aluminum was formed by CVD uniform consumption of the substrate silicon was observed, which is quite different from the phenomena observed in sprttered Al. Silicon consumption occured during the deposition of CVD Al and the erosion depth of the silicon was several hundred $\AA$ when the continuous films were formed on the substrate while much less erosion of the silicon occured when the Al were formed in islands. When the submicron contacts were selectively plugged, contact resistances were very low and the erosion depth of the silicon was trivial.
