  • In recent years, RGM(roller gear mechanism) systems, wherein one of the gears of a meshing gear pair is replaced with pins or rollers, have been reintroduced, which is a consequence of, and therefore a reflection of, the rapid advances made in manufacturing technology. Three RTG(roller track gear) systems for arbitrary path transportation (e.g., L-, O-, U-, and S-shaped tracks) were constructed using two out of three RGM systems, namely, the CRP(cam rack pinion), CRG(cam ring gear), and RPG(roller pinion gear) systems, and are introduced in this paper. We also present three ways to prevent the intersection and non-contact phenomena at the teeth in the vicinity of the conversion point between two joined RGM systems.

  • Ultrastructure of the poison secreting organ in the spiders, Agelena limbata Thorell and Nephila clavata L. Koch were studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The venom glands located its secretory sac portion in cephalothorax and excretory duct in the fang of chelicera are one pair of simple alveolar glands composed of three kinds of basic tissues-outer spiral musculature, middle myoepithelium and inner glandular epithelium. The muscle cells of the venom gland junctioned with the motor nerve endings at neuromuscular contact area are composed of smooth muscle fibers, whereas the myoepithelial cells between the musculature and inner glandular epithelium have compact collagenous fibers within the cytoplasm. The glandular epithelial cells which arranged along the concentrical location are subdivided into basal light cells and apical dark cells according to electron densities of their cytoplasms.

  • The micro-gas sensor based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was fabricated and its gas sensing characteristics on nitrogen dioxide ($NO_{2}$) have been investigated. The sensor consists of a heater, an insulating layer, a pair of contact electrodes, and CNT-sensing film on a micromachined diaphragm. The heater plays a role in the temperature change to modify sensor operation. Gas sensor responses of CNT-film to $NO_{2}$ at room temperature are reported. The sensor exhibits a reversible response with a time constant of a few minutes at thermal treatment temperature of $130^{\circ}C$.

  • The purpose of the current study was to investigate peer conflict situations and age differences in preschoolers' emotional behavior of happiness, sadness, and anger. Participants were twenty-two 3-year-olds and twenty 5-year-olds, and each pair of the same age interacted in two standardized conflict situations: object possession conflict and behavioural/interpersonal conflict. Participants' emotional behaviors of happiness, sadness, and anger were obsewationally coded through facial expression, verbal intonation, gesture, and physical contact. Preschoolers expressed more sadness and anger emotional behavior in object possession conflict than in behavioural/interpersonal conflict. In object possession conflict, 3-year-olds expressed more anger emotional behavior than 5-year-olds did. In behavioural/interpersonal conflict,5-year-olds expressed more happiness emotional behavior than 3-year-olds did.

  • Ball rolling blending is a popular technique for blending between parametric surfaces. The ball rolling blend surface is conceptually a trajectory of a ball rolling between two base sufaces. It is constructed by sweeping a circular arc along a ball contact curve pair. Since a ball rolling blend surfaces does not have a polynomial form like a Bezier surface patch, it is impossible to apply this method directly to a commercial CAD/CAM system. In this paper an algorithm is developed to approximate a ball rolling blend surface into Bezier surface patches. Least square method is applied to obtain proper Bezier surface patches under a given tolerance. The Bezier surface patches have degree three or more and guarantee VC1-continuity.

  • This paper presents a new graphical method for selecting a pair of optical glasses to simultaneously achromatize and athermalize an imaging lens made of materials in contact. An athermal glass map that plots thermal glass constant versus inverse Abbe number is derived through analysis of optical glasses and plastic materials in visible light. By introducing the equivalent Abbe number and equivalent thermal glass constant, although it is a multi-lens system, we have a simple way to visually identify possible optical materials. Applying this method to design a phone camera lens equipped with quarter inch image sensor having 8-mega pixels, the thermal defocuses over $-20^{\circ}C$ to $+60^{\circ}C$ are reduced to be much less than the depth of focus of the system.

  • A leaf spring plays an important role in a passenger bus. Since characteristic of a leaf spring has a hysteresis behaviour, modeling technique for a leaf spring is an important issue for passenger bus analysis. In this paper, modeling technique for a leaf spring is presented. First, non-linear FEM model of a leaf spring is constructed then it is used to make an approximated model to be used in dynamic analysis. The modeling procedure is ex-plained in step by step approach. Then, this model is applied to dynamic analysis of a mini-bus with flexible body and non-linear dynamic force element. The results are compared with test data.

  • The electronic and chemical properties of the surface Pt and Ru atoms in the Pt-Ru alloy have been investigated by means of extended Huckel calculations. An electron transfer occurs from Ru to Pt, resulting in an increased electron density on the surface Pt atoms. The transfer is found to be larger toward Pt atoms out of contact with Ru. The calculated electronic perturbation of the water molecule is similar when it is adsorbed either on the Pt site or on the Ru site in the alloy. However, the water adsorption strength is much smaller in the former case, since the lone-pair donations are reduced relative to the latter case. This is essentially due to a larger closed-shell repulsive interaction between $1b_2(H_2O)$ and $d_{yz}$ (Pt).

  • Thermal fusion bonding is a method to enclose open microchannels fabricated on polymer chips for use in lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is utilized in various biomedical-microelectromechanical systems (bio-MEMS) applications, such as medical diagnostic kits, biosensors, and drug delivery systems. These applications utilize PMMAs biochemical compatibility, optical transparency, and mold characteristics. In this paper, we elucidate both the conformational entanglement of PMMA molecules at the contact interfacial regime, and the qualitative nature of the thermal fusion bonding phenomena through systematic molecular dynamics simulations.

  • The wind industry grew in the first decade of the 21st century at rates consistently above 20% a year. For wind turbine, gearbox failure can be extremely costly in terms of repair costs, replacement parts, and in lost power production due to downtime. In this paper, gear tooth micro-modification for the high speed stage was used to compensate for the deformation of the teeth due to load and to ensure a proper meshing to achieve an optimized tooth contact pattern. The gearbox was firstly modeled in a software, and then the various combined tooth modification were presented, and the prediction of transmission under the loaded torque for the helical gear pair was investigated, the normal load distribution and root stress were also obtained and compared before and after tooth modification under one torque. The simulation results showed that the transmission error and normal load distribution under the load can be minimized by the appropriate tooth modification. It is a good approach where the simulated result is used to improve the design before the prototype is available for the test.
