A railway catenary system which supplies a train with electric power is an important system in determining the maximum speed of an electric train. However, a pantograph could be separated from a contact wire because of reciprocal action between a pantograph with constant upward force and a catenary system. The contact loss of a pantograph-catenary system is mainly affected by the dynamic characteristics of damping and wave propagation velocity of contact wire. For increasing speed of an electrical train, it is necessary to establish the techniques to identify the modal parameter of a catenary system through experiment. However, it is difficult to decouple each mode and to extract respect ive damping rat io since a catenary system has an extremely high modal density. For this reason, mode decoupling process to identify modal parameters is a principal technique in analyzing a catenary system. In this paper, the damping extract ion method for a catenary system using the continuous wavelet transform is discussed.

In this paper, a new method for suppressing microwelding on the RF MEMS (Radio Frequency Microelectromechanical System) direct contact switches is introduced. Two kinds of refractory metals, tungsten and molybdenum were coated onto the contact point of the switches and the effect of the coating was examined. The changes in insertion loss and isolation at the switch were measured by using network analyzer and power loss was evaluated by power measurement. The results revealed that while tungsten and molybdenum showed higher contact resistance than gold in low input power range, they enhanced the power handling capability and reliability of the switches in high input power region.

he rolling contact behaviors between a smooth ball and a flat rough surface under dynamic load are intricately affected by many factors, such as the diameter of a ball, normal load and the roughness of a flat surface etc. Accordingly, the experimental study is done to find them on the base of elastic hysteresis loss as theoretical approach is very difficult. The experimental apparatus composed of damped-free vibration system is used. This paper investigates the damping characteristics on the rolling contact area through rolling friction force and logarithmic decrement versus displacement obtained in accordance with the variations of those factors, and presents a new experimental method to find out contact width using the relations of logarithmic decrement and rolling friction force with displacement.

The piston of a marine diesel engine works under severe conditions, including a combustion pressure of over 180 bar, high thermal load, and high speed. Therefore, the analyses of the fatigue strength, thermal load, clamping (bolting) system and lubrication performance are important in achieving a robust piston design. Designing the surface profile and the skirt ovality carefully is important to prevent severe wear and reduce frictional loss for engine efficiency. This study performs flexible multi-body dynamic and elasto-hydrodynamic (EHD) analyses using AVL/EXCITE/PU are performed to evaluate tribological characteristics. The numerical techniques employed to perform the EHD analysis are as follows: (1) averaged Reynolds equation considering the surface roughness; (2) Greenwood_Tripp model considering the solid_to_solid contact using the statistical values of the summit roughness; and (3) flow factor considering the surface topology. This study also compares two cases of skirt shapes with minimum oil film thickness, peak oil film pressure, asperity contact pressure, wear rate using the Archard model and friction power loss (i.e., frictional loss mean effective pressure (FMEP)). Accordingly, the study compares the calculated wear pattern with the field test result of the piston operating for 12,000h to verify the quantitative integrity of the numerical analysis. The results show that the selected profile and the piston skirt ovality reduce friction power loss and peak oil film pressure by 7% and 57%, respectively. They also increase the minimum oil film thickness by 34%.

Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the non-contact power transmission method of magnetic gears. Since there is no mechanical contact, noise caused by friction can be reduced, and even if a sudden large force is applied, the impact of the gear is close to zero. Further, since the power is transmitted by the magnetic flux, it has high reliability. However, there is a problem that a loss due to a magnetic field due to use of a magnetic flux. The loss caused by the magnetic field of the magnetic gear is a joule loss called eddy current loss. In addition, the eddy current loss in the magnetic gear largely occurs in the permanent magnet, but it is a fatal loss to the permanent magnet which is vulnerable to heat. Particularly, magnetic gears requiring high torque density use NdFeB series permanent magnets, and this permanent magnets have a characteristic in which the magnetic force decreases as temperature increases. Therefore, in this paper, the eddy current loss of the permanent magnet according to the permanent magnet attaching method is analyzed in order to reduce the eddy current loss of the permanent magnet. We have proposed a structure that can reduce the eddy current loss through the analysis and show the effect of reducing the loss of the proposed structure.

Mechanical gears driven by direct contact have problems including noise, vibration and heat. In order to, solve these problems, magnetic gears having a non-contact magnetic coupling have been proposed. Through various studies on magnetic gears, we found that losses are changed when the number of magnetic poles varies in the same gear ratio. For this reason, research team expect the iron loss of the magnetic gear and the Eddy current loss of the permanent magnet will have a certain tendency depending on the number of poles. This paper identified the magnetic gear's loss tendency according to the number of poles, and laid the basis for efficiency improvement design.

This study examined the effects of the contact position and structure of the test probe on its signal transmission characteristics. The contact position in the operating of the test probe was considered and then divided into the plunger inner contact and barrel inlet contact. The high frequency performance of the test probes was investigated for both contact positions. The signal transmission characteristics of the test probes with the structures of double, single, and out-spring was also analyzed. The insertion and return losses were calculated using the HFSS and the characteristic impedance of the test probes was analyzed using a Q3D simulation. The insertion loss of the barrel inlet contact was smaller than that of the plunger inner contact. The contact position of the test probe may result in a change in the high frequency performance. The out-spring probe has better frequency characteristics at -1 dB insertion loss and -10 dB return loss. The double probe and single probe have the same characteristic impedance with $30.8{\Omega}$. On the other hand, the out-spring probe has an impedance of $47.1{\Omega}$. The out-spring probe is closer to $50{\Omega}$ than the other probes and then shows higher signal transmission characteristics. The out-spring probe has superior high-frequency characteristics and is expected to be suitable for high-speed applications.
Catenary and Pantograph are used to transmit electrical energy to electric railways. Catenary (Overhead Contact Lines) should be installed precisely and managed for stable train operations. But external factors such as weather, temperature, etc., or aging affect catenary geometry. Changed catenary stagger and height cause high voltage spark or instant electric contact loss. Big spark derived from contact loss can damage the pantograph carbon strip and overhead contact lines that might interrupt the train operations. Therefore, to prevent a big scale spark or electric contact loss, catenary maintenance are required catenary geometry measurement systems with catenary maintenance capability. In this paper, we describe the development of catenary height and stagger measurement system. The catenary height and stagger measurement system uses Acuity company's AR4000 Laser Range Finder for distance measurement and AccuRange Line Scanner for degree measurement. This system detects suspicious overhead line sections with excessive stagger and height stagger variance.

Interproximal contact loss (ICL) is the most frequent complication in partially edentulous patients treated with implant-supported prostheses. However, in most cases, ICL occurs between the implant prosthesis and the natural tooth due to the movement of the natural tooth. There are several causes of ICL that occur between an implant prosthesis and a natural tooth. There are only a few reported cases of ICL occurring between implant prostheses, and explaining the causes of ICL between implant prostheses and natural teeth is challenging. This clinical report describes cases of ICL between implant prostheses and discusses its causes and countermeasures.
Stiffness variations and wave propagation/reflection in railway catenaries are the primary sources of contact loss between a pantograph and a railway contact wire. This paper analyzes which design parameter is more important for 200km/h conventional rail and 300km/h high-speed rail, in order to effectively reduce the contact loss. For the high-speed rail, the wave propagation and reflection in the overhead contact lines are more influential than the stiffness variation over a span. When the high-speed rail needs to speed-up, it is necessary to develop higher strength contact wires in order to increase the wave propagation speed. In addition, the dropper clamp mass should be reduced in order to alleviate the wave reflection. However, it is noted that the increase in the tension to a messenger wire could deteriorate the current collection quality, which contrasts with expectations. For the 200km/h conventional rail, the stiffness variation over a span is more influential than the wave propagation and reflection. Therefore, shortening span length, increasing the tension in the contact wire and optimizing the location of the droppers are recommended for a smoother stiffness variation over the span.
