  • This paper presents a scheduling technique that reflects various constraints in remodeling project of inhabited condition. The remodeling project of inhabited condition is required more detailed planning and control due to claims by noise, vibration, dust, smells, limited lift capacity, and limited temporary stock area. Because of the constraints, complexity in scheduling is increased and earlier completion is required to reduce the possibility of safety and environment accidents. Especially, in case of inhabited condition, the scheduling should be linked day-time/night-time/weekend work. This paper proposes a structured scheduling technique to incorporate those constraints in remodeling of inhabited condition. This scheduling technique considers not only remodeling process but also dismantling, newly-construction, and residents movement. Process expression method using MS-Project also presented to keep connectivity with existing scheduling system.

  • This paper introduces an automated tool named Advanced Stochastic Schedule Simulation System (AS4). The system automatically integrates CPM schedule data exported from Primavera Project Planner (P3) and historical activity duration data obtained from a project data warehouse, computes the best fit probability distribution functions (PDFs) of historical activity durations, assigns the PDFs identified to respective activities, computes the optimum number of simulation runs, simulates the schedule network for the optimum number of simulation runs, and estimates the best fit PDF of project completion times (PCTs). AS4 improves the reliability of simulation-based scheduling by effectively dealing with the uncertainties of the activities' durations, increases the usability of the schedule data obtained from commercial CPM software, and effectively handles the variability of the PCTs by finding the best fit PDF of PCTs. It is designed as an easy-to-use computer tool programmed in MATLAB. AS4 encourages the use of simulation-based scheduling because it is simple to use, it simplifies the tedious and burdensome process involved in finding the PDFs of the many activities' durations and in assigning the PDFs to the many activities of a new network under modeling, and it does away with the normality assumptions used by most simulation-based scheduling systems in modeling PCTs.

  • Project managers are responsible to conduct project on time with least amount of costs and the most possible quality with respect to shortage of resources and environmental certainties. They have to make the best decision to reach such conflicting objects. In this study the project scheduling with multi goals-multi modes was planned in fuzzy conditions under resource constraints and expanded by fuzzy goal programing (FGP). The project cost was calculated by the price of renewable resources and the quality criteria were evaluated by the quality function deployment method (QFD). Finally the model was verified by a construction case study with 22 activities along with solving by GAMS. The results showed that this model could provide a systematic framework to facilitate the decision making process and made the project managers to be able to schedule the project closer to reality.

  • Various methods that crash the project completion time have been studied. Line-of-Balance (LOB) is well accepted as a useful method that enables steady resource utilization without frequent hire-and-fire of resources for a project having repetitive units. Existing studies involved in LOB-CPM focuses on thesis such as resource leveling and optimization in construction scheduling community. However, crashing methods are not arrived at a full maturity in LOB scheduling, because no one handles steady resource utilization while keeping activity-relationships. This paper proposes a method that crashes project completion time by hybridizing concurrent engineering and LOB scheduling without using additional resources.

  • Construction project has many problem such as delay of the appointed date delivery, over budget, wether and site conditions. When several activities are influenced by the same factor, their duration may be delayed. This paper deals with the problem of construction duration estimating and schedule variation on the construction project. The theory of constraints technique for project management is referred to 'Critical Chain' technique. This paper shows optimal scheduling plan and time management technique, used probability construction duration estimating and scheduling buffer based on the critical chain project management.

  • Currently, reconstruction and remodeling are conducted to improve the performance of aged housing. Recently reconstruction has caused many problems such as wastes generation, wasting resources and real estate speculation, remodeling is drawing attention. Accordingly, remodeling business for aged housings gradually increasing, but the use of scheduling method not considering characteristics of remodeling deters construction in some construction types. Especially, in case of dismantling construction, the dismantling is delayed since the scheduling method not considering characteristics of remodeling is used. In case of remodeling, dismantling construction is ahead of other processes, if the dismantling construction is delayed, whole construction will be delayed and if speedy construction is conducted, the costs for remodeling will increase. Furthermore, existing remodeling for aged housing has been for rahmen(crossbeam and pillar) structure apartments, but since most apartments to be remodeled are wall-slab structure where dismantling takes a lot of weight, it is highly possible the dismantling construction is delayed. Thus, this paper is to establish scheduling method for the dismantling construction reflecting characteristic of remodeling to prevent delay of dismantling construction for remodeling of aged housing with wall-slab structure.

  • The construction environment is dynamic in nature and is characterized by various degrees of uncertainties. The uncertainties such as lack of coordination, non availability of resources, condition of temporary structures and varying weather conditions have a significant impact on estimating the duration of activities. These are subjective, vague and imprecisely defined and are expressed in subjective measures rather than mathematical terms. Conventionally, various quantitative techniques such as CPM and PERT have emerged in construction industry. These techniques cannot solve the above problems and rely on human experts which may not always be possible. In such situations Artificial Intelligence tools such as fuzzy sets and neural networks handle such variables and provide global strategies. The present paper evaluates the effect of qualitative factors to identify the activity duration using new intelligent approach. The results are compared with conventional methods for effective project management. A case study is considered to demonstrate the applicability of fuzzy logic for project scheduling.

  • A paradigm shift in teaching modular construction in higher education and K-12 is proposed as a means to increase the future adoption of the modular construction technique. To this effect, a new education module is presented to STEM educators. This education module is based on LEGOs and directed towards educators in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. The main objectives of the education module are to increase interest and knowledge of modular construction, acknowledge the benefits of using 3D design with 4D scheduling, and create a simulating hands-on educational opportunity. The education module is designed to allow participants to experience a hands-on simulation of modular construction and stick-built construction through building a LEGO project. Participants are challenged to find the advantages and disadvantages in both construction systems first-hand and record their findings. Results are presented from the preliminary testing of this education model on a group of construction management students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Overall, the survey results showed that the LEGO education module was successful at achieving the project's three main objectives: 1) increasing the participants' interest and knowledge of modular construction through an interactive project; 2) increasing the participants' understanding of the benefits of 3D design with 4D scheduling over the use of 2D drawings; and 3) creating a simulating hands-on educational opportunity to help participants compare modular construction to stick-built construction. In the end, this proposed a new LEGO education module addressing the problems identified from this study with more participants.

  • Critical Path-based project management has been applied to the construction projects with a goal of delivering projects within original costs and time estimates. These current project management methods, rarely make early finishes of construction Projects. In addition, current practices on time management seems not to take advantages of early finishes concepts due to student syndrome and Parkinson's Law, This research study applied the Theory of Constraints(n) in the estimation of construction project duration. While the TOC includes variety of management techniques, in this study, it refers to critical chain that has been used to develop the specific management technique in scheduling. The concept of critical chain is applied to this study to solve the problems associated with the current scheduling method. The efforts focus to solve the p개blems associated with current construction project scheduling methods by adopting both stochastic estimation technique and the concept of schedule buffer,

  • A human resource management of the general contractors is to mostly deal with daily input by each subcontractor in construction fields. However, this way has some limitations; the identification of proper human-input and productivity, preventive activities or efforts for minimizing schedule delay. The reason why these limitations are that few systematic efforts through a coordinated field administration with the construction schedule planning and human resources. Therefore, on the basis of the construction schedule planning, human resource management of subcontractors is necessary to make for an improvement in construction schedule control. Daily Scheduling Check System(DSCS), as the linked human resources on an existed CPM scheduling software, was developed and this paper then verified validity and effectiveness of using the DSCS for the framework of some actual apartment construction projects
