Assessment of FEED Structure and Functions for Project Management of Thermal Power Plant Construction (사업관리 관점의 FEED 업무 프로세스 구조 및 항목 평가 - 화력발전소를 중심으로 -)

  • FEED (Front End Engineering and Design) is the key area that determines the competitiveness of procurement and construction in the EPC contracts especially in terms of the added value. Nevertheless, previous researches in FEED have been limited to the process and deliverable of design work or the particular management business function (e.g. System Engineering, collaboration, information etc.). In this context, the purpose of this study is to propose a comprehensive FEED structure and its functions from the project management perspective throughout the whole project life-cycle for thermal power plants. Proposed FEED business procedures are classified into three levels; First level is the classification of FEED business phases, the second level defines major FEED management functions, and the third level is detailed FEED functions. A survey using proposed FEED functions and assessment variable was conducted in order to analyze the current status and the areas for future improvement. It is expected that the proposed structure, functions, and evaluation methodology for FEED management will contribute to effective practice of FEED as well as to improvement of competitive capability for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies.

An Analysis of the Efficiency and Productivity of Domestic Construction Companies (국내 건설기업의 효율성 및 생산성 분석)

  • This study aims to measure the efficiency and productivity change of 30 domestic construction companies from 2010 to 2018 using data envelopment analysis(DEA) and Malmquist productivity index (MI). In particular, we used the number of employees, capital stock, and non-current assets as input variables, and sales and net income as ouput variables for the analysis. The dataset used for the analysis of efficiency and productivity changes is the employee profile and financial statements for the companies from 2010 to 2018. We found that the MI of the 30 companies is greater than one since 2013. This is because many years of TEC (Technical Efficiency Change) is greater than 1, which means that the productivity index increases as the TEC increases. In addition, the MI value was less than 1, which lowered the productivity of construction firms in 2018. The results of the study may help decision makers to find effective future management plans by analyzing the internal and external factors.

  • Developing an efficient knowledge base construction mechanism as an input method for expert systems (ES) development is of extreme importance due to the fact that an input process takes a lot of time and cost in constructing an ES. Most ES require experts to explicit their tacit knowledge into a form of explicit knowledge base with a full sentence. In addition, the explicit knowledge bases were composed of strict grammar and keywords. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a knowledge conceptualization and construction mechanism for automated knowledge acquisition, allowing an efficient decision. To this purpose, we extended traditional knowledge map (KM) construction process to dynamic knowledge map (DKM) and combined this algorithm with relational database (RDB). In the experiment section, we used medical data to show the efficiency of our proposed mechanism. Each rule in the DKM was characterized by the name of disease, clinical attributes and their treatments. Experimental results with various disease show that the proposed system is superior in terms of understanding and convenience of use.

Which CDM methodology is the best option? A case study of CDM business on S-Water treatment plant

  • Clean development mechanism (CDM) validity study was conducted to suggest better and more adaptable CDM scenario on water treatment plant (WTP). Potential four scenarios for CDM project; improvement of intake pumping efficiency, hydro power plant construction, solar panel construction and system optimization of mechanical mixing process were evaluated on S-WTP in Korea. Net present value (NPV) of each scenario was estimated based on sensitivity analysis with the variable factors to investigate the CDM validity percentile. Hydro power plant construction was the best option for CDM business with 97.76% validity and $1,127,069 mean profit by 9,813 $tonsCO_2e$/yr reduction. CDM validity on improvement of intake pumping efficiency was 90.2% with $124,305 mean profit by huge amount of $CO_2$ mitigation (10,347 $tonsCO_2e$/yr). System optimization of mechanical mixing process reduced 15% of energy consumption (3,184 $tonsCO_2e$/yr) and its CDM validity and mean profit was 77.25% and $23,942, respectively. Solar panel construction could make the effect of 14,094 $tonsCO_2$ mitigation annually and its CDM validity and mean profit was 64.68% and $228,487, respectively.

  • Concentration about value of invisible asset has increased in the condition of rapid business circumstance change. As one of these concentration, many company adopted knowledge management, and construction industry also tried to adopt knowledge management. However, it is difficult for construction company to get expected effects because of knowledge management system in no relation with business process. To solve this problems, this study adopted BPM that has many functions, such as business process design, operation, monitoring, sustainable improvement, to knowledge classification structure.

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) is widely used to efficiently share, utilize and manage information generated in every phase of a construction project. Recently, mixed reality (MR) technologies have been introduced to more effectively utilize BIM elements. This study deals with the haptic interactions between humans and BIM elements in MR to improve BIM usability. As the first step in interacting with virtual objects in mixed reality, we challenged moving a virtual object to the desired location using finger-pointing. This paper presents the procedure of developing a haptic interface system where users can interact with a BIM object to move it to the desired location in MR. The interface system consists of an MR-based head-mounted display (HMD) and a mobile application developed using Unity 3D. This study defined two segments to compute the scale factor and rotation angle of the virtual object to be moved. As a result of testing a cuboid, the user can successfully move it to the desired location. The developed MR-based haptic interface can be used for aligning BIM elements overlaid in the real world at the construction site.

  • Recently real-estate investment business is standing out as a new plan for creation of source of income. In this paper, we suggested appropriate real-estate investment strategy through the reconstruct case study of existing one-storied building. That is, we showed the efficient process of decision and propel to reconstruct and the key points for lease business and post management after building completion. Also, we analyzed the rate of return of commercial building investment in order to find its optimum dealing time. Therefore the results of this paper are expected to be a help to old ages and persons laying plans for a similar business.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine a reasonable share of cost in the apartment remodeling projects. Therefore, the case model of remodeling apartment was made up and then the rate of return by method of floor area change rate, method of proportion, method of investment earnings rate and method of proportion reflected business contribution were estimated. Consequently, the model by the method of proportion reflected business contribution presented 20.6% of rate in all apartment units.

A Study on the Entry Strategies of Small and Medium Sized Landscape Contractors to Vietnam by Risk Analysis in Overseas Projects (해외사업 리스크 분석을 통한 중소 조경건설업체의 베트남 진출전략에 관한 연구)

  • The decline in the construction industry has led to a decrease the profitability of small and medium-sized landscape contractors. To relieve this situation, small and medium-sized landscape contractors have continued to proactively find ways to enter global construction markets. However, many small and medium-sized landscape contractors face risks due to their lack of capacity and insufficient preparations to extend the business abroad. Thus, this study aims to analyze the current condition of the Vietnamese construction market and the related risk factors. It then suggests strategies to improve the small and medium-sized landscape contractors' competitiveness in that market. We investigated the business climate and analyzed risk factors. Finally, we developed expansion strategies and conducted in-depth interviews with six overseas construction professionals. The study results first showed that efforts to improve infrastructure and the increased demand for housing in Vietnam will lead to more opportunities for small and medium-sized landscape contractors entering the Vietnamese construction market. However, changes in the Vietnamese business climate may act as a variable. Second, we found that small and medium-sized landscape contractors' risk factors are mainly related to laws and regulations, government finance, market fluctuations, public administration system, minimum wage increases, financing and bonds, contracting, trees and materials, and design errors. Finally, small and medium-sized landscape contractors are required to consider the following when seeking to enter the Vietnamese construction market: short-term strategy and mid-to-long-term strategy. This study will be used as the basis for small and medium-sized landscape contractors to plan to enter the Vietnamese construction market and to contribute to the expansion of the global construction market in the landscape industry.

Improvement Factors for Reinforced Concrete Firm against Removing the restriction of Construction Market Activation (겸업제한 폐지에 따른 철근콘크리트 전문건설업체의 발전요인)

  • Recently, the Ministry of Construction and Transportation announced a notice of the legislation related to remove the restriction of construction market activation in advance. he removement is an overwhelming change of the business structure in the Korean construction industry and has a far-reaching influence on general and trade contractors. The purpose of this research was to suggest improvement factors to survive an excessive competition in reinforced concrete market. This research did SWOT analysis to examine the strength, weakness, opportunity and threat of reinforced concrete firm, and established business strategies. The factor analysis was also applied with questionnaire survey to staff in charge of reinforced concrete company. It is expected that the suggested improvement factors can give effective business strategies to reinforced concrete firm. Furthermore, trade contractors having difficulty in a bottleneck in management can get help from the result of this research.
