  • For the construction of twin single track subway tunnels by NATM within close proximity of existing vehicle underpass in the highly congested area of downtown Seoul, finite element analyses were performed to evaluate the ground responses during tunnelling and also the stability and safety of the underpass structure and subway tunnels. Results of the analyses indicated the need to improve the soil beneath the underpass, and pre-grouting was carried out prior to the tunnel excavation. During tunnel construction field measurement program was implemented to confirm the results of anslyses and to control the tunnel construction procedures, thus ensuring stability of the existing structres.

  • In this paper, we present a quadratic element model based on non-conforming displacement modes and modified shape functions. This new and refined 8-node hybrid stress plane element consists of two additional non-conforming modes that are added to the translational degree of freedom to improve the behavior of a membrane component. Further, the modification of the shape functions through quadratic polynomials in x-y coordinates enables retaining reasonable accuracy even when the element becomes considerably distorted. To establish its accuracy and efficiency, the element is compared with existing elements and - over a wide range of mesh distortions - it is demonstrated to be exceptionally accurate in predicting displacements and stresses.

  • This study carried out bender element tests in a calibration chamber in order to estimate the characteristics of soil specimen prepared in a calibration chamber. Basically, the purpose of bender element test is to measure the shear wave velocity. Bender element test cannot only confirm the status of soil specimen deposited in a chamber, but also estimate the consolidation process indirectly. In order to carry out bender element test in a calibration chamber, a pair of bender elements was installed inside the chamber, using the 'ㄷ' shaped frame. For the sandy soils having various relative densities in various stress conditions, the maximum shear modulus was estimated. From the comparison with bender element test results in a triaxial testing device, testing device and procedure was validated.

  • In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element method and construction of equivalent-circuit for a linear ultrasonic motor are presented. The validity of three-dimensional finite element routine in this paper is experimentally confirmed by analyzing impedance of a piezoelectric transducer. Using this confirmed finite element routine, impedance and vibration mode of a linear ultrasonic motor are calculated. Elliptical motion of contact point between vibrator and rail of the linear ultrasonic motor is shown for determination of contact points. By using the finite element method and analytic equations, characteristics of the linear ultrasonic motor, such as thrust force, speed, losses, powers and efficiency, are calculated. The results are confirmed by experiment. Finally, equivalent circuit parameters of the linear ultrasonic motor are obtained using the three-dimensional finite element method and analytic equations.

  • Construction concrete needs to maintain suitable environment which contains temperature and humidity etc. Then concrete shows own strength. The environment is not regular and contains many variables. Especially the climate element occupies many parts of variables. We have the climate environment which goes down to $-4^{\circ}C$. The factor that obstruct to construction is the failure at a construction progress. But it must be processed to be scheduled. Therefore we have to do the special care for factor of climate that obstruct to construction. We must make assurance doubly sure at the quality of concrete. We need maintenance of temperature and humidity for the hardening until the requirement period after a concrete pured in. We must do the care of curing sufficiently not to take the influence of injurious activity. This causes strength of concrete. Specific method of curing is according to each situation which is environment element. We wish to analyze curing course in construction of concrete at the paper. Also we wish to predict the problem as to consider curing and suggest the improvement plan through the paper.

  • Many construction companies are simultaneously carrying out numerous projects in the housing construction industry. It is essential to accurately forecast the cash flow of a project through optimal process management and resource input in order to manage funds rationally and enhance the competitiveness of a company. Current cash flow forecasting methods offer lower accuracy due to a large gap between the revenue and expenditure element. Expenditure elements depends on the real-time changing actual cost for work performed. This research survey was conducted on the actual state of construction management of K company to investigate the problems of cash flow forecasting. To achieve this, the work process and construction management system were integrated to improve the cost management system of K company. To accurately forecast the cash flow of a project, revenue and expenditure elements were displayed in the total cash flow forecast window. This research is expected to assist in the implementation of a system of cash flow forecasting on housing construction by excluding negative elements of revenue and expenditure.

  • In general, moving vehicles generate continuous and repetitive strain of energy on bridges. The strain energy can convert to electric energy due to its piezoelectric element. However, some factors should be considered in order to reasonably assess the feasibility such as load distribution applied on bridges and the relationship of strains generated according to loads. This study was carried out to estimate the generated voltage when piezoelectric elements were installed to a bridge. A steel-concrete composite specimen was fabricated and loads were applied, considering vehicle load-effects. As a result, the voltage generated in the element was evaluated and compared with the analysis equation of the piezoelectric effect.

  • In this paper, we described a co-rotational formulation for the geometrical nonlinear analysis of three-dimensional frames. We suggested a new concept called the Zero-Twist-Section Condition (ZTSC) to decide the element coordinate system consistently. According to the ZTSC procedure, it is possible to obtain an element coordinate system and natural deformations consistently when finite displacements and rotations are induced in an element. Based on the developed procedure, numerical examples are investigated to calculate natural rotations while finite displacements are imposed on an element. Also, the developed co-rotational procedure gives accurate results in the analysis of post-buckling problems with finite rotations.
