  • In this paper, optimum design is considered over the retaining wall with seismic constraints. The sequential linear programming method(SLP) is used as a rational approach to this optimum design. To make a comparison between the seismic design and the normal design, retaining wall with 4~7m height were adopted. It is shown that the seismic design is more expensive (over 30%) than the normal design for the construction cost.

  • When load areas on a feeder are deenergized due to faults and scheduled outage, operators need to identify neighboring feeders, try to restore customers and minimize out-of-service areas. These cases include knowledge of system states and various constraints such as voltage drop. This paper concerns the load transfer in fault restoration and scheduled outage. Also, the operating constraints such as line current capacity, relay trip current, transformer capacity, voltage drop and line loss are considered. This expert system can propose the optimal load transfer method by analyzing the system state and considering the constraints.

  • In active control of structures the stroke of a Hybrid Mass Damper is the one of he main constraints of the system because there is limited installation space available in the structure. To design an optimal controller for a HMD system control objective are defined considering these constraints and effectiveness of H-infinity control method with bilinear transform that satisfies the defined objective is examined for the optimum efficiency. Numerical results show that the proposed H-infinity controller satisfies the constraints and provides optimal performance.

  • This paper presents the optimization of a drilling operation subject to machining constraints such as power, torque, thrust, speed and feed rate. The optimization is meant to minimize the machining time required to produce a hole. For the first time, the effects of a pilot hole are included in the formulation of the machining constraints. The optimization problem is solved by using the geometric programming technique. The dual problem is simplified based on the characteristics of the problem, and the effects of machining constraints on the machining variables are identified.

  • Close examination of previous constraints on bound anaphora that are designed to directly constrain the distribution of referentially dependent(RD) items shows that no universal structural relation may exist that relates RD items to their antecedents. As an alternative to these constraints, this paper proposes an axiom of semantic interpretation, called the Principle of Referential Autonomy, which dispenses with any pretheoretical notion of grammatical functions or configurational notion like c-command. Together with certain English-specific facts, this principle enables us to infer the ungrammaticality of core examples of strong and weak crossover.

  • A finite element algorithm for consideration of contact constraints is presented. It is characterized by introducing the geometric constraints, resulting from contact conditions, directly into the algebraic system of equations for the incremental displacements of an incremental iterative solution procedure. The usefulness of the proposed algorithm for efficient solutions of contact problems involving large displacements and large strains is demonstrated in the numerical investigation.

  • In this thesis, based on Genetic Algorithm, a new route search algorithm is presented to search an optimal route between the origin and the destination in intelligent route guidance systems in order to minimize the route traveling time. The proposed algorithm is effectively employed to complex road networks which have diverse turn constrains, time-delay constraints due to cross signals, and stochastic traffic volume. The algorithm is also shown to significantly promote search efficiency by changing the population size of path individuals that exist in each generation through the concept of age and lifetime to each path individual. A virtual road-traffic network with various turn constraints and traffic volume is simulated, where the suggested algorithm promptly produces not only an optimal route to minimize the route cost but also the estimated travel time for any pair of the origin and the destination, while effectively avoiding turn constraints and traffic jam.

  • In this paper, we present an intermediate representation CDFG(Control Data Flow Graph) and an efficient scheduling technique for low power circuit design. The proposed CDFG represents control flow, data dependency and such constraints as resource constraints and timing constraints. In the scheduling technique, the constraints are substituted by subgraphs, and then the number of subgraphs is minimized by using the inclusion and overlap relation efficiently. Also, iterative rescheduling process are performed in a minimum bound estimation, starting with the as soon as possible as scheduling result, so as to reduce the power consumption in low power design. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been proven by the experiment with the benchmark examples.

  • A numerical trajectory planning method for path-constrained trajectory planning is proposed which ensures collision-free and time-optimal motions for two robotic manipulators with limited actuator torques and velocities. For each robot, physical constraints of the robots such as limited torques or limited rotational velocities of the actuators are converted to the constraints on velocity and acceleration along the path, which is described by a scalar variable denoting the traveled distance from starting point. Collision region is determined on the coordination space according to the kinematic structures and the geometry of the paths of the robots. An Extended Coordination Space is then constructed` an element of the space determines the postures and the velocities of the robots, and all the constraints described before are transformed to some constraints on the behaviour of the coordination-velocity curves in the space. A dynamic programming technique is them provided with on the discretized Extended Coordination Space to derive a collision-free and time-optimal trajectory pair. Numerical example is included.

  • This study investigated the leisure constraints and leisure life satisfaction of the institutional elderly. The respondents were 302 elderly people residing in 5 free institutionalized elderly homes in Seoul. The data were analyzed by frequency analysis, factor analysis, One-way ANOVA, Duncan's post hoc test and regression analysis using SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Exploratory factor analysis revealed that the 10 items in the proposed scale could be grouped into four factors of constraint on leisure:'physical constraint','psychological constraint','interpersonal constraint', and 'structural constraint 'There were differences in leisure constraints according to sex, age, education degree, interaction with facility colleagues, and interaction with facility staff. There were differences in leisure life satisfaction according to sex, age, having religion or not, interaction with facility colleagues, interaction with facility staff and leisure constraints. Regression analysis results indicated that the main effective factors of leisure life satisfaction were leisure constraints.
