In this presentation, I talk about various fluid simulation methods that have been developed for computer graphics special effects since 1996. They are all based on CFD but sacrifice physical reality for visual plausability and time. But as the speed of computer increases rapidly and the capability of GPU (graphics processing unit) improves, methods for more physical realism have been tried. In this talk, I will focus on four aspects of fluid simulation methods for computer graphics: (1) particle level-set methods, (2) particle-based simulation, (3) methods for exact satisfaction of incompressibility constraint, and (4) GPU-based simulation. (1) Particle level-set methods evolve the surface of fluid by means of the zero-level set and a band of massless marker particles on both sides of it. The evolution of the zero-level set captures the surface in an approximate manner and the evolution of marker particles captures the fine details of the surface, and the zero-level set is modified based on the particle positions in each step of evolution. (2) Recently the particle-based Lagrangian approach to fluid simulation gains some popularity, because it automatically respects mass conservation and the difficulty of tracking the surface geometry has been somewhat addressed. (3) Until recently fluid simulation algorithm was dominated by approximate fractional step methods. They split the Navier-Stoke equation into two, so that the first one solves the equation without considering the incompressibility constraint and the second finds the pressure which satisfies the constraint. In this approach, the first step introduces error inevitably, producing numerical diffusion in solution. But recently exact fractional step methods without error have been developed by fluid mechanics scholars), and another method was introduced which satisfies the incompressibility constraint by formulating fluid in terms of vorticity field rather than velocity field (by computer graphics scholars). (4) Finally, I want to mention GPU implementation of fluid simulation, which takes advantage of the fact that discrete fluid equations can be solved in parallel.

In this study, to describe vehicle-structure dynamic interaction phenomena with 1/4 vehicle model, nonlinear Hertzian contact spring and nonlinear contact damper are adopted. The external loads acting on 1/4 vehicle model are selfweight of vehicle and geometry information of running surface. The constraint equation on contact surface is implemented by the Penalty method with stabilization and the reaction from constraint violation. To describe pitching motion of various vehicles two types of the displacement constraint equations are exerted to connect between car bodies and between bogie frames, i.e., the rigid body connection and the rigid body connection with pin, respectively. For the time integration of dynamic equations of vehicles and structure Newmark time integration scheme is adopted. To reduce the error caused by inadequate time step size, adaptive time-stepping technique is also adopted. Thus, it is expected that more versatile dynamic interaction phenomena can be described by this approach and it can be applied to various railway dynamic problems with low computational cost.

A lot of efforts have been made to analyze the performance of the vehicle equipped with automatic transmission through simulation. It might be necessary to understand the different types of transmissions, i.e., different power flows, for different models. If there is a module that can be applied to different types of automatic transmission, it could be helpful to transmission-related engineers. This study has started up from this idea. The common bond graph has been obtained from several types of the automatic transmission. The overall generalized equations and kinematic constraint equations have been derived using virtual power sources on common bond graph. They are used to derive state equations and constraints. These equations have been applied as an application to the vehicle equipped with two simple planetary gear set type of Ravigneaux gear type automatic transmission. The state equation, kinematic constraints, and dynamic constraints have been derived in every gear and shift operation using overall generalized equations and kinematic constraint equations. Simulations for constraint speed running, standing-start running, rolling-start running, and LA-4 mode have been conducted to analyze the performance of the vehicle powertrain using GVPS(Generalized Vehicle Powertrain Simulation) program wit pull down menus.

The objective of this paper is to develop a solution method for the differential-algebraic equation(DAE) derived from constrained muti-body dynamic systems. Mechanical systems are often modeled as bodies and joints. Differential equations of motion are formulated for bodies. Since the bodies are connected by joint, the differential variables must satisfy the kinematic constraint equations that come from the joints. Difficulties are arised due to drift of the differential variables off the constraint equations. An optimization method is adopted to correct the drift of the differential variables. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method a slider-crank mechanism is analyzed dynamically. Identical results are obtained as these from the commercial program DADS. Dynamic analysis of a High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled. Vehicle(HMMWV) is carried out to show the practicalism of the proposed method.

Since the first shape-form-shading technique was developed by Horn in the early 1970s, many different approaches have been continuously emerging in the past three decades. Some of them improve existing techniques, while others are completely new approaches. Using the image reflectance equation, they estimate the 3-D shape of an object utilizing adequate constraints. Each algorithm applies different constraints such as brightness, smoothness, and integrability to solve the shape-from-shading problem. Especially for symmetric objects, a symmetry constraint is proposed to improve the performance of existing shape-from-shading algorithm in this paper. The symmetry constraint is imposed to a conventional algorithm and then the improvement in the performance of 3-D shape reconstruction is proved by quantitatively comparing the depth and gradient errors.

Basic constraint equations derived from orthogonality conditions between a pair of body-fixed vectors and a body-fixed vector or a vector between two bodies are reformulated by using relative coordinate kinematics between two adjacent reference frames. Arithmetic numbers of operations required to compute derivatives of the constraint equations are drastically reduced. A mixed formulation of relative and cartesian coordinates is developed to further simplify derivatives of the constraints. Advantages and disadvantages of the new formulation are discussed. Possible singularity problem of para llelism constraints is resolved by introducing an extra generalized coordinate. Kinematic analysis of a McPherson strut suspension system are carried out to illustrate use and efficiency of the new formulation.
In this study, to describe vehicle-track-bridge dynamic interaction phenomena with 1/4 vehicle model, nonlinear Hertzian contact spring and nonlinear contact damper are introduced. In this approach external loads acting on 1/4 vehicle model are self weight of vehicle and geometry information of running surface. The constraint equation on contact surface is implemented by Penalty method. Also, to improve the numerical stability and to maintain accuracy of solution, the artificial damper and the reaction from constraint violation are introduced. A nonlinear time integration method, in this study, Newmark method is adopted for both equations of vehicles and structure. And to reduce the error caused by inadequate time step size, adaptive time-stepping technique is partially introduced. As the nonlinear Hertzian contact spring has no resistance to tensile force, the bouncing phenomena of wheelset can be described. Thus, it is expected that more versatile dynamic interaction phenomena can be described by this approach and it can be applied to various railway dynamic problems.
Most of the IS continuance research has assumed that IS use is activated by an intention to use, which in turn is determined by the evaluation of IS usage. Perceived usefulness is one of the evaluation variables most widely used. Typically, the past studies adopt this perceived usefulness because it views continuance as an extension of acceptance behavior. However, the literature on interpersonal relationships suggests that individuals are motivated to maintain relationships either because they genuinely want to or they believe they have no other option. The former is referred to as dedication-based relationship maintenance and the latter as constraint-based relationship maintenance. The IS continuance can be considered as the relationship maintenance situation with the existing IS that the user is currently using. The belief constructs previously used in IS continuance researches fall into the category of dedication-based ones. Additional constraint-based belief constructs are needed to explain the IS continuance behavior. In this regard, switching cost represents an important avenue for better understanding and predicting customer retention in that it can be regarded as the constraint-based motivation for relationship maintenance or IS use continuance. For an empirical exploration, 275 samples were collected from the users of a web portal site. Data analysis using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) shows that perceived usefulness shows a significant direct effect on continuance intention while perceived switching cost significantly affects continuance usage.

A method is suggested for validating the existence of bias error on GPS carrier measurement. The baseline constraint is used as an addition measurement, which augments the original measurement equation. The detection probability is calculated on both cases. The first case is using GPS carrier measurement only, the second case is using GPS carrier and a baseline constraint. The improvement of the detection probability is shown, and the advantage of using baseline constraint is described statistically, the results of the simulation is shown and analyzed.

In this paper, a level set based energy functional is proposed, the minimization of which results in simultaneous reference background image modeling and foreground segmentation. Due to the mutual constraint of the two processes, a good estimate of the background can be obtained with a small number of frames, and due to the use of the level set, an Euler-Lagrange equation that directly solves the problem can be derived.
