The paper describes localization of deformation in a bar under tensile loading. The material of the bar is considered as non-linear viscous elastic and the bar consists of two symmetric halves. It is assumed that the model represents behavior of the quasi-brittle viscous material under uniaxial tension with different loading rates. Besides that, the bar could represent uniaxial stress-strain law on a single plane of a microplane material model. Non-linear material property is taken from the microplane material model and it is coupled with the viscous damper producing non-linear Maxwell material model. Mathematically, the problem is described with a system of two partial differential equations with a non-linear algebraic constraint. In order to obtain solution, the system of differential algebraic equations is transformed into a system of three partial differential equations. System is subjected to loadings of different rate and it is shown that localization occurs only for high loading rates. Mathematically, in such a case two solutions are possible: one without the localization (unstable) and one with the localization (stable one). Furthermore, mass is added to the bar and in that case the problem is described with a system of four differential equations. It is demonstrated that for high enough loading rates, it is the added mass that dominates the response, in contrast to the viscous and elastic material parameters that dominated in the case without mass. This is demonstrated by several numerical examples.
In this presentation, I talk about various fluid simulation methods that have been developed for computer graphics special effects since 1996. They are all based on CFD but sacrifice physical reality for visual plausability and time. But as the speed of computer increases rapidly and the capability of GPU (graphics processing unit) improves, methods for more physical realism have been tried. In this talk, I will focus on four aspects of fluid simulation methods for computer graphics: (1) particle level-set methods, (2) particle-based simulation, (3) methods for exact satisfaction of incompressibility constraint, and (4) GPU-based simulation. (1) Particle level-set methods evolve the surface of fluid by means of the zero-level set and a band of massless marker particles on both sides of it. The evolution of the zero-level set captures the surface in an approximate manner and the evolution of marker particles captures the fine details of the surface, and the zero-level set is modified based on the particle positions in each step of evolution. (2) Recently the particle-based Lagrangian approach to fluid simulation gains some popularity, because it automatically respects mass conservation and the difficulty of tracking the surface geometry has been somewhat addressed. (3) Until recently fluid simulation algorithm was dominated by approximate fractional step methods. They split the Navier-Stoke equation into two, so that the first one solves the equation without considering the incompressibility constraint and the second finds the pressure which satisfies the constraint. In this approach, the first step introduces error inevitably, producing numerical diffusion in solution. But recently exact fractional step methods without error have been developed by fluid mechanics scholars), and another method was introduced which satisfies the incompressibility constraint by formulating fluid in terms of vorticity field rather than velocity field (by computer graphics scholars). (4) Finally, I want to mention GPU implementation of fluid simulation, which takes advantage of the fact that discrete fluid equations can be solved in parallel.
The displacement and pressure field of liquid crystals are analyzed numerically and compared with classical Reynolds theory. A plane slider bearing is employed as a simple example considering elasticity, permeability and splay effect which are the inherent characteristics of layered liquid crystals. Due to the geometric constraint of thin wedge and the strong anchoring behavior of the liquid crystals dislocations are inevitable. A finite element method is used to solve five coupled nonlinear equations. The load characteristics based on the pressure distribution along the gap shows that the liquid crystals can carry large load compared to the conventional lubricants.
A method for optimal route planning is presented with the assumption that the overall defended area is known in terms of threat potential function. This approach employes tangent plane to reduce the dimension of the state space for optimal programming problems with a state equality constraint. One-dimensional search algorithm is used to select the optimal route among the extermal fields which are obtained by integrating three differential equations from the initial values. In addition to being useful for the route planning through threat potential area, the trajectory planning will be suitable for general two-dimensional searching problems.
A microscopic theoretical study is performed to predict the rheological properties of human blood in the low concentration limit. The shear thinning behavior of blood in the low shear limit is studied by considering the aggregate formation of red blood cells, which is called the rouleaux formation. Then the constitutive equations of blood in the high shear limit are derived for various flow situations by considering the unique features of deformation of blood cells. Specifically, the effects of the surface-area-preserving constraint and the lank-treading motion of blood cells on the rheological properties are studied.

The finite plasticity in strain space is viewed by formulating the consistency condition and the thermodynamic condition with respect to proposed state variables. The Naghi-Trapp work assumption is used to obtain a constraint equation, and the normality equation is formulated. Finally, an elastoplastic tangent modulus, which is based on the derived equations in strain space, is proposed.

This paper presents a dynamic model of a high mobility tracked vehicle composed of rigid bodies. Track is modeled as an extensible cable and the track tension between the sprocket and roller is calculated by the catenary equation. The ground force acting on a road wheel is calculated by the Bekker's pressure-sinkage relationship using the segmented wheel model. System equations of motion and constraint acceleration equations are derived in the joint coordinate space using the velocity transformation method.

An approximate function approach has been developed using the subsystem synthesis method for real-time multibody vehicle dynamics models. In this approach, instead of solving loop closure constraint equations of the suspension linkage, approximate functions are used. The approximate function represents the functional relationship between dependent coordinates and independent coordinates of the suspension subsystem. This kinematic relationship is also included in the suspension subsystem equations of motion. Different order of polynomial functions are tried to find out the best candidate functions. The proposed method is also compared with the conventional subsystem synthesis method to verify its efficiency and accuracy.
A structure is broken down into a number of substructures by means of the finite element method and the substructures are synthesized for the complete structure. The divided substructures take two types: fixed-free and free-free elements. The flexibility and stiffness matrices of the free-free elements are the Moore-Penrose inverse of each other. Thus, it is not easy to determine the equilibrium equations of the complete structure composed of two mixed types of substructures. This study provides the general form of equilibrium equation of the entire structure through the process of assembling the equilibrium equations of substructures with end conditions of mixed types. Applications demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in the structural analysis of geometrically complicated structures.

Elastic elements, at first, were extensively used in suspensions as vibration isolators at joints. Nowadays they are used to improve stability and handling. The design of these elements has become a very important matter since the loading condition of the mechanism gives a mew suspension geometry without any modification. This paper presents an analysis of forces and moments of joints with elastic elements in the McPherson suspension mechanism to evaluate accurately the elastic deformation using the displacement matrix method in conjunction with the equilibrium equations. First the suspension is modeled as a multi-loop spatial rigid-body guidance mechanism which has elastic elements at the hardpoints of the suspension. Then a method and design euqations are developed to analyze the suspension characteristics by the various tire load. Also the displacement matrices and constraint equations for links are appllied to determine the sensitivity of the suspension mechanism. Finally this approach may conduct a realistic design of suspension mechanisms with elastic elements to improve the performance of the automobile under various driving conditions.
