  • In many tropical regions, soil structures often fail under constant loads as a result of decreasing matric suction due to water infiltration. Most of the previous studies have been performed by infiltrating water in the soil specimen by keeping shear stress constant at 85-90% of peak shear strength in order to ensure specimen failure during water infiltration. However, not many studies are available to simulate the soil behavior when water is infiltrated at lower shear stress and how the deformations affect the soil behavior if the failure did not occur during water infiltration. This research aimed at understanding both the strength and deformation behavior of unsaturated soil during the course of water infiltration at 25%, 50% and 75% of maximum deviatoric stress and axial strain by keeping them constant. A unique stress-strain curve expresses the transient situation from unsaturated condition to failure state due to water infiltration is also drawn. The shearing-infiltration test results indicate that the water infiltration reduces matric suction and increase soil deformation. This research also indicates that unsaturated soil failure problems should not always be treated as shear strength problems but deformation should also be considered while addressing the problems related to unsaturated soils.

  • Accelerated life tests (ALTs) are extensively used to determine the reliability of a product in a short period of time. Test units are subject to elevated stresses which yield quick failures. ALT can be carried out using constant-stress, step-stress, progressive-stress, cyclic-stress or random-stress loading and their various combinations. An ALT with linearly increasing stress is ramp-stress test. Much of the previous work on planning ALTs has focused on constant-stress, step-stress, ramp-stress schemes and their various combinations where the stress is generally increased. This paper presents an optimal design of ramp soak-stress ALT model which is based on the principle of Thermal cycling. Thermal cycling involves applying high and low temperatures repeatedly over time. The optimal plan consists in finding out relevant experimental variables, namely, stress rates and stress rate change points, by minimizing variance of reliability function with pre-specified mission time under normal operating conditions. The Burr type XII life distribution and time-censored data have been used for the purpose. Burr type XII life distribution has been found appropriate for accelerated life testing experiments. The method developed has been explained using a numerical example and sensitivity analysis carried out.

  • The inferences on a series system under the usual condition using data from constant stress partially accelerated life tests and type I censoring is studied. Two optimal designs to determine the sample proportion allocated each stress level model are also presented, which minimize the sum of the generalized asymptotic variances of maximum likelihood estimators of the failure rate and the acceleration factors and the sum of the asymptotic variances of maximum likelihood estimators of the acceleration factors for each component. Each component of a system is assumed to follow an exponenial distribution.

  • The least squares estimation method for model parameters under failure step-stress accelerated life tests is studied and a numerical example will be given to illustrate the proposed inferential procedures under the compound linear plans proposed as an alternative to the optimal quadratic plan, assuming that the exponential distribution with a quadratic relationship between stress and log-mean lifetime. The proposed compound linear plan for constant stress accelerated life tests and 4:2:1 plan are compared for various situations. Even though the compound linear plan was proposed under constant stress accelerated life tests, we found that this plan did well relatively in failure step-stress accelerated life tests.

  • A simple method was suggested to calculate the stress intensity factor for a one-sided patched crack with finite thickness. To consider out-of-plane bending effect resulting from the load-path eccentricity, the spring constant as a function of the through-thickness coordinate z was calculated from the stress distribution in the un-cracked plate, ${\sigma}_{yy}(y=0,\;z)$, and the displacement for the representative single strip Joint, $u_y(y=0,\;z)$. The stress Intensity factors were obtained using Rose's asymptotic solution approach and compared with the finite element results. In short crack region, two results had a little difference. However, two results were almost same in long crack region. On the other hand, the stress intensity factor using plane stress assumption was more similar to finite element result than plane strain condition.

  • In-plane piezoelectric charge constant of Electro-Active paper (EAPap) was investigated based on direct and converse piezoelectric effects. EAPap samples were made with cellulose film with very thin gold electrode coated on both sides of the film. To characterize direct piezoelectricity of EAPap, induced charge was measured when mechanical stress was applied to EAPap. In-plane piezoelectric charge constant was extracted from the relation between induced charge and applied in-plane normal stress. To investigate converse piezoelectricity, induced in-plane strain was measured when electric field was applied to EAPap. Piezoelectric charge constant was also extracted from the relation of induced in-plane strain and applied electric field. Piezoelectric charge constants obtained from direct and converse piezoelectricity are 31 pC/N and 178 x 10-12m/V for 45 degree sample, respectively. Measured piezoelectric charge constants of EAPap provide promising potential as a piezoelectric material.

  • We presented design methodology of constant velocity joint for passenger cars using design of experiment. On the basis of contact normal stress of internal components of constant velocity joints, we performed a sensitivity analysis of several design parameters. And then we performed robust design and optimization design process. As a result, we could find robust design and also propose the optimized design. Presented design process would be very helpful for engineers who are suffer for new constant velocity joint design.

  • The effects of anisotropic mechanical stress applied normal to the surface of p-n junctions have been investigated. As the stress increased, the breakdown voltage was decreased and the breakdown mode became softer. Within a certain limitation in the applied stress, the above phenomena werw reversibbe, though relaxation and hysteresis phenomena were observed. The time constant of relaxation depended upon the shape of the stressing tip, but for the given tip and device a unique time constant was obtained. The stress.dependence of breakdown voltage showed a good linearity up to about 3.0${\times}10^4$ kgw/$\textrm{cm}^2$, when the flat tip of radius 15$\mu$ was used, and the temperatere-dependence of breakdown voltage under the stress also showed a good linearity in the temperature range of 100 to $300^{\circ}K$.

  • An AZ31 magnesium alloy was tested at constant temperatures ranging from 423 to 473 K (0.46 to 0.51 Tm) under constant stresses. All of the creep curves exhibited two types depending on stress levels. At low stress (${\sigma}/ G < 4 {\times}10^{-3}$), the creep curve was typical of class A (Alloy type) behavior. However, at high stresses (${\sigma}/ G > 4 {\times}10^{-3}$), the creep curve was typical of class M (Metal type) behavior. At low stress level, the stress exponent for the steady-state creep rate was of 3.5 and the true activation energy for creep was 101 kJ/mole which is close to that for solute diffusion. It indicates that the dominant deformation mechanism was glide-controlled dislocation creep. At low stress level where n=3.5, the present results are in good agreement with the prediction of Fridel model.
