  • The 2D flow around 13 similar stay-vane profiles with different trailing edge geometries is investigated to determinate the main characteristics of the excitation forces for each one of them and their respective dynamic behaviors when modeled as a free-oscillating system. The main goal is avoid problems with cracks of hydraulic turbines components. A stay vane profile with a history of cracks was selected as the basis for this work. The commercial finite-volume code $FLUENT^{(R)}$ was employed in the simulations of the stationary profiles and, then, modified to take into account the transversal motion of elastically mounted profiles with equivalent structural stiffness and damping. The k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model is employed in all simulations and a deforming mesh technique used for models with profile motion. The static-model simulations were carried out for each one of the 13 geometries using a constant far field flow velocity value in order to determine the lift force oscillating frequency and amplitude as a function of the geometry. The free-oscillating stay-vane simulations were run with a low mass-damping parameter ($m^*{\xi}=0.0072$) and a single mean flow velocity value (5m/s). The structural bending stiffness of the stay-vane is defined by the Reduced Velocity parameter (Vr). The dynamic analyses were divided into two sets. The first set of simulations was carried out only for one profile with $2{\leq}Vr{\leq}12$. The second set of simulations focused on determining the behavior of each one of the 13 profiles in resonance.

  • In this study, a method of nonlinear dynamic analysis of suspension bridges subjected to random wind loads is pre.sented. The nonlinearity considered is the one due to the interaction between the motion of the bridge girder and the tertsion variation of the main cables. The equation of motion is formulated using a continuum approach. The coupling between the vertical and torsional motions are included in the analysis. The equation of motion is solved by using the mode superposition method. The analysis is carried out in the frequency domain utilizing the stochastic linearization technique on to the modal equations. In the linearization procedure, the nonlinear terms are approximated as linear ones with constant terms. The verification of the method has been performed on a case with four modal degrees of freedom. Example analyses are carried out on two suspension bridges for various wind speeds and wind force parameters. Numerical results indicate that, by including the nonlinearity into the analysis, the dynamic responses of the bridges, particularly in the vertical direction, change considerably.

  • The binomial sequences are family of orthogonal sequences that can be generated with remarkable simplicity-no multiplications are necessary. This paper introduces a class of non-recursive multidimensional filters for frequency-selective image processing without multiplication operations. The magnitude responses are narrow-band. approximately gaussian-shaped with center frequencies which can be positioned to yield low-pass. band-pass. or high-pass filtering. Algorithms for the efficient implementation of these filters in software or in hardware are described. Also. we show that the binomial QMFs are the maximally flat magnitude square Perfect Reconstruction paraunitary filters with good compression capability and these are shown to be wavelet filters as well. In wavelet transform the original image is decomposed at different scales using a pyramidal algorithm architecture. The decomposition is along the vertical and horizontal direction and maintains constant the number of pixels required to describe the images. An efficient perfect reconstruction binomial QMF-Wavelet signal decomposition structure is proposed. The technique provides a set of filter solutions with very good amplitude responses and band split. The proposed binomial QMF-filter structure is efficient, simple to implement on VLSl. and suitable for multi-resolution signal decomposition and coding applications.

  • Bending and vibration results for a laminated plate base on a simplified higher-order plate theory with four variables are presented. Assuming a constant in-plane rotation tensor through the thickness in Reddy's higher-order shear deformation theory it is shown that a simpler higher-order theory can be obtained with the reduction of one variable without significant loss in the accuracy. This simple higher-order shear deformation theory is then used for predicting the natural frequencies and deflection of simply-supported laminated composite plates. The results obtained for antisymmetrical laminated composite plates compare favorably with third-order and first-order shear deformation theory. The information presented should be useful to composite-structure designers, to researchers seeking to obtain better correlation between theory and experiment and to numerical analysts in checking out their programs.

  • Nanomaterial architecture with highly ordered, vertically oriented $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays shows a good promise for diverse technological applications. As inspired from the literature reports that Nickel modification can improve the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$, it was planned to coat Ni into the $TiO_2$ matrix. In this study, first $TiO_2$ nanotubes(TiNTs) were prepared by anodization (60V,3min) in HF-free aqueous electrolyte on ultrasonically cleaned polished titanium sheet substrates ($1{\times}7cm^2$). The typical thickness of the sintered TiNT ($500^{\circ}C$for10min) was ~1 micronas confirmed from the FESEM study. In the next part, as-anodized and sintered TiNT/Ti photoanodes were used to coat Ni by AC electrodeposition from aqueous 0.1M nickel sulphate solution. During AC electrodeposition, conditions such as 1V DC offset voltage, 9V amplitude (peak-to-peak) and 750 Hz frequency were fixed constant and the deposition time was varied as 0.5 min, 1 min, 2 min and 10 min. The photoelectrochemical performance of pristine and Ni modified TiNT/Ti photoanodes was measured in 1N NaOH electrolyte under 1 SUN illumination in the potential range of -1V and 1.2V versus Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The photocurrent performance of TiNT/Ti photoanode decreased upon Ni modification and the results were confirmed after repeated experiments. This suggests us that Ni modification inhibits the photoelectrochemical performance of $TiO_2$ nanotubes.

  • This paper summarizes characteristics of the Korean tuna purse seine fishery in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO). Major fishing area for the Korean tuna purse seine fleet consisted of the waters of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands and adjacent high seas between $130^{\circ}E-180^{\circ}$ The center of the Korean tuna fishing ground was in the vicinity of $180^{\circ}$ during the El - $Ni{\tilde{n}}$o event but was formed in $150^{\circ}-160^{\circ}$E during the La - $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ event. As compared with other major purse seine fleets in WCPO, the Korean fleet set more on unassociated schools of tuna, while Japan, USA and Chinese - Taipei fleets accounted for more than 50% of sets on log - associated schools. In general, CPUES for log - associated schools were higher than those for unassociated schools and catch composition showed that yellowfin ratio was higher in unassociated shools than log - associated schools. Length frequency represented higher percentage of mid - sized yellowfin than Japanese and USA fleets. Daily set numbers and CPUE were high before 7 am and remained almost constant from 7 am to 3 pm but decreased rapidly after 3 pm and 5 pm, respectively. Catch composition per set indicated that pure skipjack school was caught most frequently, followed by mixed school and pure yellowfin school as the least, but CPUE was highest for the mixed school.

  • The elutriation characteristics of particle size distribution were investigated in a gas-solid fluidized bed. Experiments were carried out with the mulit-sized particles of Gaussian distributions. The elutriation rate constant obtained from the experiment was correlated with the standard deviation of particle size and the dimensionless group of the velocity ratio. The standard deviation of pressure fluctuation, mean pressure, major frequency and power spectrum density function were calculated by pressure fluctuation properties. Size distribution of elutriated particles and pressure fluctuations were measured for the particle size distribution of particle system depended largrly on the size distribution. Characteristics of fluidization and elutriation were greatly influenced by the particle size distribution and these characteristics could be interpreted with pressure fluctuation properties.

  • Groundwater flow in a fractured rock mass is related to the geometric characteristics of the fracture system. The objective of this study aims to analyze the probabilistic density function of fracture properties md their relations to the hydraulic conductivity in volcanic rocks of the northern Yosu area. Fracture characteristics were investigated by core logging and acoustic televiewer logging in four boreholes and the hydraulic conductivity was obtained from the constant pressure injection and fall-off tests. The 303 fractures were grouped into three sets by their orientation and three fracture types by the degree of opening in aperture. As a result of the study, the hydraulic conductivity in the test section intersected by open and semi-open fractures, conductive fractures, and set 1 fractures was very high, while closed fractures did rarely affect the hydraulic conductivity. It was recognized that the hydraulic conductivity in a fractured rock mass was preferentially affected by the aperture size of conductive fractures and fracture intersection frequency and size, secondly.

  • The effect of x wt% CuO-y wt% $V_2O_5$ content on the microwave properties of $(Pb_{0.45}Ca_{0.55})[(Fe_{0.5}Nb_{0.5})_{0.9}Sn_{0.1}]O_3$ (PCFNS) ceramics was investigated. In order to decrease the sintering temperature and use as a Low Temperature co-firing Ceramics (LTCC), CuO-$V_2O_5$ are added in the PCFNS. The bulk density, dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$) and quality factor(Q${\cdot}f_0$) increased with increase in CuO content within a limited value. The microwave properties were degraded with increases in $V_2O_5$ content. The temperature coefficient of the resonant frequency (${\tau}_f$) of PCFNS was shifted to positive value abruptly with increasing the $V_2O_5$ content, while the ${\tau}_f$ was slightly shifted to positive value with increasing the CuO content. The optimized microwave properties, ${\varepsilon}_r$ = 88, Q${\cdot}f_0$ = 6100 (GHz), and ${\tau}_f$ = 18 ppm/$^{\circ}C$, were obtained in $(Pb_{0.45}Ca_{0.55})[(Fe_{0.5}Nb_{0.5})_{0.9}Sn_{0.1}]O_3$ with 0.2wt% CuO 0.05 wt% $V_2O_5$ and sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. The relationship between the microstructure and microwave dielectric properties of ceramics was studied by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
