Heat transfer performance improvement by fin and groovs is studied for condensation of R-11 on integral-fin tubes. Eight tubes with trapczodially shaped integral-fins having fin density from 748 to 1654fpm(fin per meter) and 10, 30 grooves are tested. A plain tube having the same diameter as the finned tubes is also used for comparison. R-11 condensates at saturation state of 32 $^{\circ}C$ on the outside tube surface coded by inside water flow. All of test data are taken at steady state. The heat transfer loop is used for testing singe long tubes and cooling is pumped from a storage tank through filters and folwmeters to the horizontal test section where it is heated by steam condensing on the outside of the tubes. The pressure drop across the test section is measured by menas pressure gauge and manometer. The results obtained in this study is as follows : 1. Based on inside diameter and nominal inside area, overall heat transfer coefficients of finned tube are enhanced up to 1.6 ~ 3.7 times that of a plain tube at a constant Reynolds number. 2. Friction factors are up to 1.6 ~ 2.1 times those of plain tubes. 3. The constant pumping power ratio for the low integral-fin tubes increase directly with the effective area to the nominal area ratio, and with the effective area diameter ratio. 4. A tube having a fin density of 1299fpm and 30 grooves has the best heat transfer performance.

Despite growing interest in Ge as a possible alternative to Si, reliable data on Ge surface has been relatively scarce. Using low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), we investigate band-bending effects of localized charge traps at Ge(001) surface at 78 K. For this investigation, we prepared nearly defect-free Ge(001) surface by keeping the background pressure to < $1{\times}10^{-10}$ mbar during outgassing. Ge(001) surfaces this obtained exhibit a flat-band condition, and deposition of charge traps induce a distinct, sharp boundary between pinned and depinned surface area in the constant current mode STM images. We will show the tip-surface interaction plays an essential role in producing the boundary, and discuss about the conditions that enable the pinning effect.
Effect of organic loading rate on UASB performance was evaluated under the renditions of some surface area/reactor volume ratio and different reactor diameter. At the low leading rate of 0.4 kg $COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, reactor performance was not affected by reactor diameter. At the organic loading rate of 6 kg $COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, however, volatile acid accumulation and low COD removal efficiency is observed in reactor having 6.4 cm diameter, while volatile acid is not accumulated at all and high COD removal efficiency is observed in reactor having 3 cm diameter. Such a difference of reactor performance depending on reactor diameter can be explained that sludge bed can be fluidized by evolved gas bubble in narrow reactor, while sludge bed ran not be fluidized by evolved gas bubble only in wide reactor. At a high organic loading rate of 20 kg $COD/m^3{\cdot}d$, it can be judged that there is no relation between reactor configuration and reactor performance because all reactors showed very low COD removal efficiencies regardless of reactor diameter. Narrow and tall type reactor is favorable condition for making sludge bed fluidization at a constant surface area/reactor volume ratio. Thus, it can be judged that reactor configuration and sludge bed fluidization have great influence to reactor performance.

The normal and tangential belt forces for two types of flat belts are measured and compared. From friction theory, ti was assumed that tangential friction is proportional to the actual contact area $A_{a}$ and $A_{a}$ is proportional to normal pressure P; i.e., $A_{a}$ .var.P$^{n}$ . For a flat belt with cloth backing, the n=2/3 is obtained for the constant of belt surface model. For a flat belt with rubber backing, the n=0.9 to n=1.0 is suggested as a surface model constant. The theoretical equation developed in this paper showed agood with the experimental results.

In order to clarify turbulent combustion characteristics of hydrocarbon mixtures by hydrogen addition, turbulent burning velocities in a constant volume vessel were measured for both lean and rich hydrocarbon mixtures. Moreover, the configuration characteristics of turbulent flame was investigated in the wrinkled laminar flame region. A laser tomography technique was used to obtain the images of turbulent flame, and quantitative analyses were performed. As a result, the characteristics of turbulent burning velocity was shown a distinct difference with the addition rate of hydrogen between lean and rich mixtures. On the other hand, the obtained tomograms showed that the surface area of turbulent flame depends almost only on the turbulence intensity.
We solve the isoperimetric problem, the least-perimeter way to enclose a given area, on various Euclidean, spherical, and hyperbolic surfaces, sometimes with cusps or free boundary. On hyperbolic genus-two surfaces, Adams and Morgan characterized the four possible types of isoperimetric regions. We prove that all four types actually occur and that on every hyperbolic genus-two surface, one of the isoperimetric regions must be an annulus. In a planar annulus bounded by two circles, we show that the leastperimeter way to enclose a given area is an arc against the outer boundary or a pair of spokes. We generalize this result to spherical and hyperbolic surfaces bounded by circles, horocycles, and other constant-curvature curves. In one case the solution alternates back and forth between two types, a phenomenon we have yet to see in the literature. We also examine non-orientable surfaces such as spherical M$\ddot{o}$obius bands and hyperbolic twisted chimney spaces.
In this paper, an optimization technique for thin walled beams of vehicle body structure is proposed. Stiffness of thin walled beam structure is characterized by the thickness and typical section shape of the beam structure. Approximate functions for the section properties such as area, area moment of inertia, and torsional constant are derived by using the response surface method. The approximate functions can be used for the optimal design of the vehicle body that consists of complicated thin walled beams. A passenger car body structure is optimized to demonstrate the proposed technique.
This study reported the adsorption of Cu(II) ions onto activated carbon prepared from Myristica Fragrans shell (MFS AC) over independent variables of contact time, activating chemical (NaOH) concentration, initial adsorbate concentration, initial pH of adsorbate solution and adsorption temperature. The MFS AC structure, morphology and total surface area were characterized by FTIR, SEM and BET techniques, respectively. The Cu(II) ions adsorption on the MFS AC (activated using 0.5 M NaOH) fitted best to Freundlich adsorption isotherm (FAI), and the FAI constant obtained was 0.845 L/g at $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 4.5. It followed the pseudo first order of adsorption kinetic (PFOAK) model, and the PFOAK based adsorption capacity was 107.65 mg/g. Thermodynamic study confirmed the Cu(II) ions adsorption should be exothermic and non-spontaneous process, physical adsorption should be taken place. The total surface area and pore volume based on BET analysis was $99.85m^2/g$ and 0.086 cc/g, respectively.
Specific surface area is becoming a very important factor when newly developed advanced nano-materials are evaluated. But there have been many differences in results when measuring specific surface areas, depending on the measuring equipments and analysis method. To verify the reliability of the specific surface area measurement device supplied within the country, Round Robin Test (RRT) has been done at 21 affiliated research institutes. As a result, it was found that several institute had problems in measuring of gas adsorption amount in measuring equipment, and this proved the need for certified reference material (CRM). Furthermore, it was also found that the results from BET analysis is easily swayed by the analyst's subjectivism, and the calculated results may differ up to 16% in case of CRM I depending on the selection range of BET analysis. So this showed that a standard guideline for BET constant C value and fitting correlation coefficient R is needed, to properly select range in BET analysis. The experience in RRT, distribution of CRM, and standardized procedure would result in improved reliability in industrial processes, and thus, would contribute to the quality management, the productivity improvement, the safety evaluation, and the new material development.

We have studied the surface micelle formation of polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) at the air-water interface. A series of four PS-b-P2VPs were synthesized by anionic polymerization, keeping the PS block length constant (28 kg/㏖) and varying the P2VP block length (1, 11, 28, or 59 kg/㏖). The surface pressure-area ($\pi$-A) isotherms were measured and the surface morphology was studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) after Langmuir-Blodgett film deposition onto silicon wafers. At low surface pressure, the hydrophobic PS blocks aggregate to form pancake-like micelle cores and the hydrophilic P2VP block chains spread on the water surface to form a corona-like monolayer. The surface area occupied by a block copolymer is proportional to the molecular weight of the P2VP block and identical to the surface area occupied by a homo-P2VP. It indicates that the entire surface is covered by the P2VP monolayer and the PS micelle cores lie on the P2VP monolayer. As the surface pressure is increased, the $\pi$-A isotherm shows a transition region where the surface pressure does not change much with the film compression. In this transition region, which displays high compressibility, the P2VP blocks restructure from the monolayer and spread at the air-water interface. After the transition, the Langmuir film becomes much less compressible. In this high-surface-pressure regime, the PS cores cover practically the entire surface area, as observed by AFM and the limiting area of the film. All the diblock copolymers formed circular micelles, except for the block copolymer having a very short P2VP block (1 kg/㏖), which formed large, non-uniform PS aggregates. By mixing with the block copolymer having a longer P2VP block (11 kg/㏖), we observed rod-shaped micelles, which indicates that the morphology of the surfaces micelles can be controlled by adjusting the average composition of block copolymers.
